What is expensive but worth every penny?

Following on from the previous thread about expensive purchases that weren't worth it, what is expensive but actually is worth it? What do you own or have done that is very expensive but you don't regret it at all?

@CheltenhamLady sorry to jump in on your post but this company is in my local area and very well thought of for trees. Not used them myself but know a few people who have.

That site looks amazing, thank you!

I'm just suggesting that maybe, given this is a thread about expensive things that are worth every penny, that perhaps that isn't always the case for private education.

@starshipsahead things that are worth every penny to one person are not always to the next, that is life!! It is disingenuous to suggest this is the case for just one item people feel adds value to their live Hmm

CheltenhamLady · 15/02/2022 13:40

@CaveMum

Thank you. That is very useful.

Engage brain.
I don’t regard half of what is listed on this thread as being “worth every penny”
But it damn well IS for the person who posted it 🙄

notwavingbutdrowning5 · 15/02/2022 14:29

It’s not right that society is like this but it isn’t something I think we can change.
We can change it easily. Progressive change has only ever come about because people have demanded it. And the demand for educational equality is growing.

Do you have the same view about private medical care / health insurance in the UK?
Yes. It’s a queue-jumping abomination that drains resources from the NHS.

ThinWomansBrain · 15/02/2022 14:37

@Draineddraineddrained - Sockshop socks are really good.
Online or often in TK Maxx.

Renting hotdesk space in a really friendly community environment rather than working from home is brilliant, and well worth the cost. TBH, I prefer it to working with colleagues in the office as well.

Hear, hear.

Good education and health-care are a right, not a privilege.

RussianSpy101 · 15/02/2022 15:35

@Puffalicious @notwavingbutdrowning5 so if you had the option to pay for your child to have an important operation / appointment and they could have either in 2 weeks privately or 6 months on the NHS, and waiting that long for the NHS would have a negative impact on your childrens health, you wouldn’t pay?

notwavingbutdrowning5 · 15/02/2022 15:42

People who favour private medicine always seem to come up with this fictitious binary scenario. The answer is that whenever my children have been ill, NHS staff have without exception given them gold-star care and treatment, despite the pressures the service faces. I totally trust that it would continue to do so.

Jjjaaakkk · 15/02/2022 15:46

Then you’ve been very lucky

One of them Oxford

You were ok about paying uni fees?

Ditto to notwaving. My DC needs to regularly see 3 different consultants/ departments in the NHS due to life-long illness and disabilities. I have every faith in them.

And, no, I wouldn't pay.

I teach and I cannot see any benefit a DC could have in private education (apart from networking) that they don't get from a solid, comprehensive education and a supportive home environment.

This. I hate going away and feeling like home is so much nicer.

I don’t pay their Uni fees (does anyone do this?). They have loans.

I find it a bit weird that you’ve checked out where my children go to university. You could have asked if you wanted to know.

Jjjaaakkk · 15/02/2022 16:25

This is getting silly, tbh it’s a whole different thread!

Oh come on

Yes whilst checking your history (always interesting when a poster is vehemently against private education)… you’ll deny it - but I point blank don’t believe that your children have loans given your lifestyle

notwavingbutdrowning5 · 15/02/2022 16:26

I so agree with this. It’s partly the idea of sleeping in a different bed. Money spent on a good bed is always money well spent.

My lifestyle. What on earth is that, @Toanewstart23?

You can point blank disbelieve what you like, but I'm not in the habit of lying. What do you want me to do – show you my Sfe log-in?

Absolutely. I will not stay anywhere that isn't at least as nice as my own home.

notwavingbutdrowning5 · 15/02/2022 16:36

@Jjjaaakkk, I agree! I would love to go back to the original point of this thread. I hold my hands up to protesting about the private-school thing originally, but if I'd known it would end up with accusations of lying I wouldn't have bothered.

Once again, OP, apologies.

Benjispruce5 · 15/02/2022 16:51

University isn’t private school.
