What is expensive but worth every penny?

Following on from the previous thread about expensive purchases that weren't worth it, what is expensive but actually is worth it? What do you own or have done that is very expensive but you don't regret it at all?

@RosesAndHellebores

We got to over 30 pages on a thread about actual expensive things rather than services before the private school debate kicked off. Perhaps an odd mention along the way but others kept to the spirit of the thread. There are so many threads about the pros and cons. This wasn't the one for the ruck.

Agreed.

Try cooking your food without the crisping plates- make sure you select air fry and turn the heat up a bit xx

An expensive mattress.

I spent £1000 on a mattress and it is worth every penny. If I had money to burn then I would try one of those £10,000 mattresses.

I would love to know if they are worth it!

Keladrythesaviour · 15/02/2022 09:26

Definitely our bed. Superking high quality mattress, about £3k all in. Life changing.

HarrietsweetHarriet · 15/02/2022 10:41

My lovely Seasalt Planthunters coat. 3 winters in and it's still waterproof and cosy (super soft fleece lining). Worth every penny.
My Burmese cat. Full of personality and an absolute joy (when he's not being a rascal)

What is expensive but worth every penny?
@starshipsahead how is it a waste? Without knowing everyone’s reason for choosing private, you can’t say that.

I’ve not chosen private for my children because I’m desperate for them to go to oxbridge. I’ve chosen their school because it is the best for them and what parent doesn’t want the best for their children?
If my children choose to go to university, they will obviously end up with teens from state school as they are a huge majority so I hope that’s not your attempt at calling it a waste?
Private school is about much, much more than grades.
I would never consider it a waste of money.
I didn't say it was necessarily a waste, I was saying that many private school parents will feel defensive about it in case it's a waste. Which in all honesty it might be in some cases, in some cases it might not.

I went to one of the best private schools in the country, as did my DH. I understand the benefits. However as a teacher who has taught in a few state schools now- I can also quite clearly see that in some cases state schools can very much match what private schools are doing in terms of the experience, and certainly the education that the child receives. Working in state schools has really opened my eyes to just how good some state schools are- and so yes, I do think it's very possible that some parents are 'wasting' their money. We will never know though- as we can't school our children twice to compare.

As someone who went to private school myself, and who can v much afford private for my children, I will be choosing to send them to state.

I'm just suggesting that maybe, given this is a thread about expensive things that are worth every penny, that perhaps that isn't always the case for private education.

Apple iPhone
Apple iPad
Apple laptop

I resisted for many years and believed that they weren't anything special/different enough to justify the cost, so plodded on with Android phones, Windows laptop etc.

My son gave me his old iPhone when he upgraded and I thought I'd give it a try. Within a couple of months I bought my own iPad and then a couple of months later bought an Apple laptop.

It's hard to explain just why they're so much better, but they really are.

Thought of another one: established trees. They cost so so so much more but the impact in a garden is instant and incredible.

AdmiralCain · 15/02/2022 10:51

3+ years of therapy
Going wherever in the world I've wanted and in turn staying in some amazing Airbnb's - the type you can only dream of.
A £1000+ Mammoth Mattress, a 100% pure hungarian down duvet and a The white company 6" down mattress topper. Utter indulgence. I struggle to get out of my bed everyday

thecatswhiskas · 15/02/2022 10:54

The dogs, one being infinitely more expensive than the other! 12 year old lab blew through her insurance 3 weeks after her renewal so now waiting for the pot to refill at the next renewal. Until then we are paying for her meds, scans etc plus insurance, but hey she’s worth it.

The kids, especially now the elder two are both doing after school activities and youngest still in childcare. Considering kids are so often accused of being glued to a screen mine seem to have an awful lot of activities to be taken to throughout the week.

The house, most expensive thing we’ve ever bought but it’s ours… well it will be when we finish paying off the mortgage Grin

Boucleme shampoo, my hair’s condition is so much better since I started using this and following the curly girl method.

Body shop lemon hand sanitizer

Scrumbleton · 15/02/2022 11:05

Really wild sheepskin coat and biker boots - so luxurious, comfortable and toasty warm
Fairfax and favour boots on 4th winter
Duvetica down coat - on 8th winter

slipperyeel · 15/02/2022 11:12

100%, really good eggs are a small but very worthwhile indulgence!

Badbaddog · 15/02/2022 11:16

My Herman Miller desk chair - no more pain in the coccyx!

rambleonplease · 15/02/2022 11:18

Agree with this too. Love my Apple Mac. Going strong far beyond any PC I have owned.
MrsJamin · 15/02/2022 11:23

😂 at the people who've only ever had iPhones when "new features!" on them have been in android phones for years. A fool and his money etc!

Gingernaut · 15/02/2022 11:24

A half decent washing machine
Aussie 3 Minute Miracle conditioner

Jaxhog · 15/02/2022 11:49

Seasalt waterproof coat
Superkingsized waterbed with 2 separate water mattresses. Bliss!
Down pillows
Kerastase Volumactive hair mask. You can't buy it in the UK anymore, so I have to import it from Italy. Worth it though.
My house.

Thanks so much for the coat recommendation - I've been on the lookout for a new raincoat for a while so on seeing your post had a look at the Planthunter - just what I'm looking for and even better it was in the sale which was offering an extra 20% off today, so I've just ordered one for £60, reduced from £160!

Gorgeous cat by the way, my own (moggy) is currently snoring on the chair next to me while I browse Mumsnet work Wink

Do you have a stockist for these, please? I have looked online and they are advertised as mature but when you go further they are too small for what we need.
