What is expensive but worth every penny?

Following on from the previous thread about expensive purchases that weren't worth it, what is expensive but actually is worth it? What do you own or have done that is very expensive but you don't regret it at all?

Our DC
Our cleaner. We have now gone 3 weeks without her because of covid and we r keen for her to return.
Gardener even though our garden is small.
Chanel handbags. Expensive when purchased more so now.
Our house. Great area near tube and good school.

Martinisarebetterdirty · 13/02/2022 10:08

Revitalash and Prada shoes. Icebreaker merino base layers and my LV card holder. I’ve had the latter for 10 years and it looks new.

Yes my bike stuff costs a fair amount, coverting a real leather jacket currently and it's £450Confused[/quote]
Yep, buy the best you can afford, savings in the long run, some of my gear is over 10 years old and is still going strong

BigSkies22 · 13/02/2022 10:11

Ooh, good thread.

Lavazza coffee (the black packet, not the red)
Erich Bompard cashmere and silk jumpers
Alpaca socks from Freight in Lewes
Hackney Gelato ice cream
Our dog
Mylands or Little Greene paint (but not Farrow & Ball)
Our new bathroom
Proper frames for artworks
Education, in all its guises
Family holidays, especially the one in Japan

Winterflower84 · 13/02/2022 10:12

Private school for DD

Sevensilverrings · 13/02/2022 10:14

Good balsamic vinegar (got some for Christmas)!
Highest quality oil paints and boards
My studio and my just gorgeous new lithograph printer. I’m in love.
Travel….as much as I can squeeze in!
Theatre
Our wonderful cleaner. Saved sanity, health and marriage too I expect.
Growing flowers and veg from plugs not seed. So much less work!
Wool socks
Our architect
Really nice bedding
Our now old and doddery Alpacas
Heated pool. Means I can exercise without further wrecking my shonky body. It’s also essentially a huge playpen for energetic offspring.

Things I don’t give a fig about that’s saved a fortune….expensive skin care, hairdressers, fashion, flash cars, business class. Horses for courses I guess!

A whole other list for the kids, but that’s another story..!

Cashmere bed socks; Belgian chocolate; my cat; paying for ds's university education so he has no loans; decent sourdough.

Our home and all the renovations- we feel very lucky to live where we live.
Paying someone to clean the oven.
L'Oréal Steam Pods- they have done wonders for my hair, I will never go back to GHD's or similar.
DC's music and drama classes.
Good wine.
Emma mattress and decent memory foam pillows.
Holidays- at least once a year DH and I try to get away without the DC for a few nights in addition to our family holiday. It's good for our marriage and for my sanity!
Good quality noise cancelling headphones.
My record collection- it's an expensive hobby but it makes me happy.
Bobbi Brown vitamin E moisturiser.
Getting my hair coloured every 5 weeks.

The biggest thing has probably been taking a significant pay cut to go from working FT to 3 days a week, term time only. Made a massive difference to my mental health and we're very lucky we could afford for me to do it.

Derrymum123 · 13/02/2022 10:23

Doc Martens. Have a collection. Cannot wear any other brand now. Love choosing which pair to wear each morning. Also my Smart Car. She's just my favourite car ever.

InvisibleDragon · 13/02/2022 10:24

Ninja Foodi blender / smoothie maker. Been using it at least once a day for 6 months now.

1forward2back · 13/02/2022 10:26

Dyson Hairdryer! Dries my hair in seconds and has saved me so much time. It also looks and feels shiny after.
My other one (not expensive, but adds up over time) is loo roll. Cheap stuff vs expensive. There is no comparison and it’s a luxury we keep going with.
Coffee machine - I spent £400 last year on it in lockdown. Was the best thing we did and we saved for ages - both massive coffee lovers.

Kittromney · 13/02/2022 10:36

That’s IPL, not laser then. It will grow back.

Viviennemary · 13/02/2022 10:38

Tom Ford lipsticks. I'vd got five. I'm not usually extravagant but I love them.

Benjispruce5 · 13/02/2022 10:42

@marthasGinyard We received an Avoca throw from an Irish auntie, for our wedding present 25 years ago and it has never left our sofa. We all fight over it as my other IKEA wool throws just don’t cut it.

QueenPeony · 13/02/2022 10:44

Agree re sewing thread! Paying less is not worth it and just leads to frustration.

Hobbs posh fitted wool coat, was in the sale but still expensive. Still looks new over 10 years on, doesn’t date and perfect for all formal occasions.

Lansinoh

Isabel marant - I only have a few bits off eBay / sales as I can’t afford full price, but all are amazingly flattering and wearable and get worn all the time.

Kittromney · 13/02/2022 10:44

My housekeeper (Filipina) - tbf this gets covered through work and I wouldn’t be able to afford it otherwise 😳 but more as a tip to those who can

Expensive mattresses and bedding

Girlking · 13/02/2022 10:45

My Mulberry Handbags
High thread Egyptian cotton sheets/pillowcases
Clarins skincare

My professional iron which has a sensor that changes temperature automatically depending on fabric.
Seven for all Mankind jeans
Wolford leggings/tights
Wool/cashmere jumpers/wraps/socks
Avoca blankets/throws

Long haul flights, flying business class!

CrimbleCrumble1 · 13/02/2022 10:48

My holidays, never had a bad one and have so many lovely memories.
Same for nights out with friends.

Benjispruce5 · 13/02/2022 10:48

Hard to answer as I love a bargain but Ray-Ban Polaroid sunglasses. I’ve had loads of cheap pairs but these are just so good and actually enhance everything. Just need sun.
