To think dogs shouldn’t be allowed in shops

Has anyone else seen that wilkos are now allowing dogs in their stores? I’m not keen on dogs as it is and wouldn’t really want other shops to start allowing dogs in. What about people that are scared of them? Seriously why do you need to take your dog shopping? I hope no other shops start doing this.

I'm a lifelong dog lover and owner and don't think pets should be allowed in shops (I'm not counting certified assistance dogs as pets.)
I don't take it on trust that other people to train their dogs because I've seen far too often that they dont; and even then accidents happen. A dog could panic if the fire alarm goes off and become a bite risk.
I can't imagine what a dog gets out of going shopping. If a dog becomes distressed if its separated from its owner, thats an issue that needs treating.

Lockheart · 09/02/2022 13:17

Dogs are allowed in all shops. Guide dogs can go anywhere.

RedCandyApple · 09/02/2022 13:18

I really don’t see why they think it’s needed, lots of dog owners won’t clean up their dogs poo around where we live so I imagine they wouldn’t bother in a shop either!

I’m not referring to guide dogs, it’s open to all dogs now. Guide dogs are completely different.

It wouldn't have crossed my mind that dogs weren't already allowed in a shop like Wilkos. Maybe not exclusive clothes shops (i.e. shops that only sell clothes, not clothes that are particularly high end) but a hardware/cleaning stuff/odds and ends place like Wilkos then sure.

Are dogs not allowed in supermarkets? I'm realising now I've never seen one so probably not but I wouldn't think it odd if I did see one.

Pyri · 09/02/2022 13:20

I think dogs should be allowed in shops tbh. Not in food shops where unruly dogs might eat the sausages but given the rise in dog thefts, it’s no longer safe to tie your dog up outside which means that it’s quite difficult to run errands and walk your dog at the same time

I really cannot believe that many dogs would poo inside either!!

Thelnebriati · 09/02/2022 13:21

They didn't used to be allowed in food shops. Assistance dog owners are taught to clean up after their dogs.

Mumoblue · 09/02/2022 13:22

I used to work for Wilko about two years ago and they always allowed well behaved dogs in the store I worked at. 🤷‍♀️

I thought it was a bit weird, but it rarely happened that someone bought a dog in, and it never caused an issue. I’m sure the stance would change quickly if someone got bitten though.

Comedycook · 09/02/2022 13:22

Assistance dogs only.

I don't like dogs and think dogs in shops sounds very unhygienic

Lockheart · 09/02/2022 13:22

Do you think guide dogs magically don't shed fur, have muddy paws, shake, produce saliva, induce allergies, or are some sort of strange breed that people aren't scared of?

Guide dogs are still dogs.

katienana · 09/02/2022 13:22

I read that they won't be allowed in food aisles

Yes but the advantages they bring outweighs any negatives.

I don’t think I’ve ever seen a guide dog in a shop tbh, so I think you are less likely to come across them than any one who just fancies taking their dog for a walk and of course guide dogs are a necessity, no one NEEDS to take their dog to wilkos.

@Comedycook and presumably Wilko's has decided that allowing dogs in has advantages that outweigh negatives.

CounsellorTroi · 09/02/2022 13:25

I’ve seen older dogs in shops riding in dog buggies. Can’t see the problem with that.

Sadly I would like to believe people would respect this but you are also meant to pick up after your dogs but many owners round here don’t bother so not sure many will stick to that.

YABU. Dogs unfortunately do need to be allowed in shops. Dog theft is rife. Dogs are being stolen all over the country, not just from outside shops or in cars, but also from their own homes (more than 50% of dog theft occurs from the home/garden). Until dog theft is treated as an actual crime with appropriate punishment, people are wary of leaving dogs alone at all and many would rather take them to the shops etc. It's a sad world we live in!!!

bluechinavase · 09/02/2022 13:27

Guide dogs and other assistance dogs are also guaranteed to be well trained. As much as I love dogs why do they need to be allowed everywhere? Ah probably coz of the new dog owner fur baby brigade who can’t leave their (usually annoying and badly behaved) dog home for half an hour whilst they go shopping.

Justleaveitblankthen · 09/02/2022 13:28

Of course the OP is not referring to guide dogs. Jeez, some people 🙄
Guide dogs are trained not to sniff every surface ( including faeces and urine ) Cousin Sharon's Bichon frise? Unlikely..
Fancy that on your fingers@ Wilko's pick'n'mix?

My dogs are allowed everywhere in my own home, but in shops? Even theywould be horrified.

MorningStarling · 09/02/2022 13:28

Dogs shouldn't be allowed in businesses that are indoors, except assistance dogs perhaps. There's no need for them to be inside. If the argument is around security because they're likely to be stolen then shops would also be full of cyclists and their bikes because they're likely to be get stolen too.

So people don’t work? They stay with their dogs 24/7 in case someone steals it?

Comedycook · 09/02/2022 13:29

My concern would be if they urinate/deficate in shops. I wonder if clothes shops will allow dogs? Now that would really put me off!

Hoardasurass · 09/02/2022 13:31

Mountain warehouse has always allowed dogs in and even has a water bowl for them. It's never been a problem and I've never known a house trained dog to poo in a house, shop or any indoor setting, even the crappiest of dog owners will train there dogs to poo outside ffs

CrowFriend · 09/02/2022 13:31

I take my 2 small terriers in quite a few shops. John Lewis, urban Outfitters, Top Shop when it was still going.
I only go when it’s quiet and have never had a bad experience or had anyone throw their pearls at me! In fact lots of people, especially the staff, make a fuss of them. I am of course considerate and don’t let them get in peoples way or sniff the merchandise.
