To think dogs shouldn’t be allowed in shops

Has anyone else seen that wilkos are now allowing dogs in their stores? I’m not keen on dogs as it is and wouldn’t really want other shops to start allowing dogs in. What about people that are scared of them? Seriously why do you need to take your dog shopping? I hope no other shops start doing this.

MN seems to have a higher proportion of dog owners who really believe that dogs trump everyone else's needs (aka phobias and allergies). I really like dogs and so does my son now, but he was terrified of them for nearly two damn years because of a couple of really nasty incidents.

And whilst we didn't know at the time, he's got autism- strong negative associations are part and parcel of this. It's really not as easy as getting over it. That's why it's a phobia in the first place!

Ragwort · 09/02/2022 14:46

I manage a small shop and our company policy is 'no dogs allowed' (obviously assistance dogs are allowed) ... the amount of abuse we get for not allowing their precious dog (who 'would never annoy anyone') in is unreal, one woman made a great fuss and said her dog was getting over a stroke and needed to 'settle' - so she left him in the door way blocking any one else from leaving or entering the shop. If you dog is that unwell surely leave it at home? Hmm

fedup222 · 09/02/2022 14:47

@RedCandyApple

I wondered when someone would compare them to children, a lot of the comments on the article were from people saying “well children are allowed in shops so why shouldn’t dogs be allowed” Hmm children don’t tend to just randomly attack or bite people or jump up at them or poo and wee over the floor!
Or have phobias or allergic to children. It baffles me honestly.
Suzi888 · 09/02/2022 14:48

@Lockheart

I will think twice about shopping in there now frankly.

Oh no, I can hear the share price crashing as we speak!

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

@VelvetChairGirl if you eat from pick n mix trust me a dog hair will be the least of your worries! I’ve seen kids picking in their noses and then pinching candy. Grim.

“Hate going to a pub and having to sit at the table next to a stinky wet Labrador.” DDog is very offended and says not to worry he will shake himself off Grin.

I wouldn’t personally take my dog to wilkos, what happens when you want to go in other shops. Are many people really likely to bother doing this. Really? Confused
Had no idea dogs were allowed in John Lewis either, I saw a few at Christmas.
But agree with pp the furry pound is mighty, never underestimate it! I’m sure Wilkos has home delivery in any case.

Glitterygreen · 09/02/2022 14:49

I think it's fine if the dog is on a lead.

Tbh I don't think many people would choose to take their dog shopping anyway, but it makes things easier if someone is just popping in somewhere quickly and they have their dog with them.

fedup222 · 09/02/2022 14:50

@Zilla1

Private space so proprietor can decide what represents their preferences and commercial interests and public can do likewise. Interesting how some people seem to identify their own preferences with 'there's no need' and expect the world to be shaped by their opinion of what it needed.
Same can be said for dog lovers who want to ban all kinds of fireworks because it upsets their little fur babies. Their preferences shouldn't be the decision of banning bonfire night and setting up petitions.
Pinkypie86 · 09/02/2022 14:52

Go yo designer outlet places, dogs are allowed in every shop. Very high end designer stores. Why the hell not, dogs are far cleaner than most humans.

fedup222 · 09/02/2022 14:54

@Pedalpushers

People with phobias can't expect the world to revolve around them. If you're so terrified of dogs that you can't be near one in a shop, you are the one with the problem and should seek help for it.
I hope you have this same energy for when your little fur babies don't like fireworks and want bonfire night banning because of them. Like everyone who enjoys fireworks and bonfire night should be made to not have some enjoyment because fur children don't like them.

What about people who are allergic to them? Is it there problem still so they should avoid shops because people can't leave their dogs at home for an hour?

godmum56 · 09/02/2022 14:55
@godmum56 that's not true. The law requires only that a business make "reasonable adjustment" for customers with disabilities. That can include permitting assistance dogs but it doesn't have to - you just cant put in place an ill thought out blanket ban. Likewise, no business has to just accept that any random dog is an assistance dog just because someone says so. They can have a policy saying what counts, what doesn't and in what circumstances. So you don't just get to take your assistance dog, or rabbit, or pony, or emu to the theatre, on a flight, into school.
Where people disagree as to whether the adjustments made were reasonable or not then they need to be tested in law.
actually you are both right and wrong.....yes they can ban ALL animals. but they can't pick and choose which is what the 2010 Equality Act says. There maybe safety legislation that trumps the 2010 EA eg pony on a plane. My point was that folk who say "oh they should only allow registered assistance dogs" because in the UK that does not exist.

Hmm
Plumface · 09/02/2022 14:55

Ofc it's stupid to have dogs in shops but then Brits have always been stupid about dogs (and neglectful/hostile towards children.)

Ok i like animals, but dogs smell of damp and must - who are you hanging around that's smells worse??

EmpressSuiko · 09/02/2022 14:57

Dogs have always been allowed in certain shops though so this isn’t exactly a new thing and it’s helpful to elderly people who always tie their dogs up outside of shops which is too dangerous to do now.

If you live in or visit Cornwall you’ll find it’s really common to allow dogs into most shops, they seem to actively encourage it!
One shop assistant in New Look was absolutely overjoyed to see my dog and basically dragged me in the shop so she could say hello to him!

SliceOfCakeCupOfTea · 09/02/2022 14:57

Our local dobbies sells more or less the same types of soft furnishings as a wilkos, along with food, kitchen stuff, clothes, toys, furniture, etc etc etc alongside all the plants and garden stuff.

Dogs have always been welcome in there. They have a Newfoundland's group who meet up every week at the cafe and it's bloody lush to see all these giant, majestic dogs just mooch around. Don't think I've ever seen a dog shit or piss on the floor, damage stock, bite other customers or do anything other than wag their tails and mooch about.

mumofthree22 · 09/02/2022 14:57

Our local large John Lewis happily allows dogs throughout the store - not sure about in the cafe.

SliceOfCakeCupOfTea · 09/02/2022 14:58

What dogs are you sniffing that smell like damp and must?? Confused

BeeDavis · 09/02/2022 14:58

The people that don’t want dogs in shops are the same people that let their children run riot in them! Honestly can’t go shopping nowadays without kids playing hide and seek in between clothes rails, running into my trolley whilst you hear their parent pathetically try to tell them off. Dogs are much more well-behaved!

You must be noseblind. Dogs bath weekly or less, go in puddles, don't wipe their bottoms, get wet in rain and water. They smell of dog up close and indoors.

Zilla1 · 09/02/2022 15:03

@fedup222 I see the point you are making though I agree the analogy works. Someone can choose not to allow dogs into their home or any shop or business premises they own. Many dog owners struggle to sound proof their own houses enough to stop dogs inside being petrified by fireworks outside, especially when people buy and use display fireworks not for use in a residential area.

Mercurial123 · 09/02/2022 15:03

I think it's a great idea.

Wilko's announcement:

A pet is more than just a pet, they’re family. That’s why we’ve decided to welcome pets in-store at 248 of our locations 🤩

We hope that shoppers will enjoy bringing their furry friends along with them 🐶

Please check for new signage at the entrance of your local store to see if they are participating.

Zilla1 · 09/02/2022 15:03

don't agree the analogy works...

BrocolliHamster · 09/02/2022 15:07

I'm no huge fan of dogs, but I work in a shop that allows dogs and we have never had any issues, or damage to stock in an 8 year time span.

OMG12 · 09/02/2022 15:08

Loads of shops allow dogs in already esp round high dog ownership areas. Don’t see the problem, never ever seen a dog causing an issue in a shop or pub

BuddhaForMary · 09/02/2022 15:09

How is that a comparison to what @Zilla1 said? It just isn't!

MRSAHILL · 09/02/2022 15:09

I've no objection to dogs being allowed in shops. I hardly think they'll be a mad rush in people suddenly bringing their dogs shopping with them, most people, myself included, prefer to leave them at home. However, if that's impossible for someone, I'd rather the dog was allowed in the shop than being left tied up outside, where the poor thing could get stolen.
