To think dogs shouldn’t be allowed in shops

Has anyone else seen that wilkos are now allowing dogs in their stores? I’m not keen on dogs as it is and wouldn’t really want other shops to start allowing dogs in. What about people that are scared of them? Seriously why do you need to take your dog shopping? I hope no other shops start doing this.

@BuddhaForMary

I’d prefer dogs weren’t in shops, I’m allergic t o them

No issue with guide dogs at all,

Which is it? Are you selectively allergic?

Hmm
thispooshallpass · 09/02/2022 16:40

Guide dogs are an absolute necessity, disingenuous to pretend you don't know the difference between someone's nuisance Jack Russell

Comedycook · 09/02/2022 16:40

My dog is well trained. I don't really understand the reasoning for not buying from a shop which allow dogs that aren't assistance dogs?

Your dog may be well trained but if you let anyone with a dog bring it in, some will be badly behaved. Dog faeces and urine potentially on the floor of a clothes shop is grim. Not to mention then brushing past the clothes with their fur or slobber. Gross.

GirlInACountrySong · 09/02/2022 16:41

My co worker has her dog as an 'anxiety' dog

Helps her cope apparently...

AllThingsServeTheBeam · 09/02/2022 16:41

@DockOTheBay not many people would take a dog in a shop that wasn't calm, that would jump up you, bite your kids or rub their arses over the produce. Ffs. Get a grip.

Just because they allow dogs doesn't mean your local Wilko's is going to turn into fucking crufts.

XenoBitch · 09/02/2022 16:43

I don't take my dog shopping locally, as I can leave her at home.
On holiday though, I don't have much choice. Luckily, the overwhelming majority of shops/cafes where I go are dog friendly.
My dog is also shop friendly, as in she minds her own business and is house trained.

Plenty of dogs i encounter in parks aren't calm and do try to jump up. They are easily avoided in parks, not so much in a narrow supermarket aisle.
I'm sure your dog is very well behaved but plenty aren't.

Theluggage15 · 09/02/2022 16:45

I’ve seen dogs in all sorts of shops, it’s no big deal.

Verv · 09/02/2022 16:45

I have no issue with dogs in shops.

Loads of elderly people combine their trip into town with walking the dog so I can see it being a benefit to them to not leave them outside where there's a risk of theft, not comparable to bicycles as I believe that locks can be and are regularly purchased for them as a matter of course.

Well trained dogs (who tend to be able to cope with being on a lead in areas of heavy foot traffic eg town centres) dont immediately need to drool crap or urinate the minute they set foot into a shop.
There is an automatic assumption that dogs are more unruly/out of control/less hygienic than children in shops - aye right ok then.

Ultimately its down to the premises to decide if its going to welcome dogs or not. Fortunately, the world tends to offer a lot of different options when it comes to where people can spend their money.

I have seen clothing in shops that other people have tried on. Make up, fag smell, excessive perfume.. you name it.... it is on the supposedly "new" clothing.
I have also seen kids help themselves to pick & mix, sticky hands and all. And someone change their baby's nappy on a display dining table in The Range (they left it the nappy there too). But yeah, dogs are the problem.
SpaghettiArmsMurderer · 09/02/2022 16:47

@PainterMummy

John Lewis has been allowing dogs in their shops (at least on Sundays) for a while. I think as king as your dog is well behaved (so not aggressive, house trained so it won’t poo/pee in the shop), why not?
Well, I don’t like dogs in shops so since I saw one in JL I haven’t been back in there. I keep reading in the local news the store may close. It’s of their own making if they do.
hangrylady · 09/02/2022 16:47
@hangrylady completely missing the point there aren't we Hmm
I don't think so. Care to elaborate?

AllThingsServeTheBeam · 09/02/2022 16:47

@DockOTheBay we aren't talking about parks are we? I know there are dick head owners who can't control their dogs. But this is about a dog being allowed in a shop. People with unruly dogs probably aren't going to want it leaping around in a store where they're liable to need to pay.

Bet you've never seen one rub their arse on produce.... 🤣

Exactly...let's not add any more potential filth to that list hey?!

NotTheMrMenAgain · 09/02/2022 16:51

Dogs are allowed in shops and restaurants in various countries and I assume it doesn't cause too much trouble, or it wouldn't happen.

I was in a very fancy department store in Germany some years back and saw a gorgeous pair of setters in the handbag department - took my brain a second to process it because I'm not used to seeing dogs in shops.

And I think most of the times I've seen dogs in restaurants it's only been as they were entering or leaving with their owners, as they settled down under or next to the table.

I suppose it depends on people being sensible and not taking their dog into places if they know they'll be jumping round, causing chaos and trying ti befriend every other human and dog in the place (which is why I wouldn't take my furry little terror to a shop!)

ApolloandDaphne · 09/02/2022 16:54

@Comedycook

Assistance dogs only.

I don't like dogs and think dogs in shops sounds very unhygienic

At least your average dog won't touch everything and run about like a small child might! I would rather have dogs than children in shops but I realise this is not a popular opinion.
DontBuyANewMumCashmere · 09/02/2022 16:54

I don't understand all the angst, except for people with allergies or phobias.

If you just don't like dogs and you don't like this new policy, don't shop there.
If you love dogs and you think it's a great idea, go there more.

The businesses will soon work out which is more profitable.

coronabeer · 09/02/2022 16:55

@BuddhaForMary

Same can be said for dog lovers who want to ban all kinds of fireworks because it upsets their little fur babies. Their preferences shouldn't be the decision of banning bonfire night and setting up petitions.

How is that a comparison to what @Zilla1 said? It just isn't!

OT but fireworks terrify all sorts of animals, not just dogs and cats. Wild animals, farm animals, horses, even zoo animals. If there's a petition to ban them for domestic use, sign me up.

It's so weird that so many humans are so unpleasant about the young of their own species and prefer a whole other species. I'm sure no other animals do this do they?

GirlInACountrySong · 09/02/2022 16:59

Yes

My dog much prefers me over other dogs!

It doesn't revenue make sense because all the reasons they claim to dislike children (messy, don't listen, germs), dogs do as well. Don't get how you can have a flat dislike for children, I find it a bit immature and asocial

Well, other animals don't use computers either. Humans are pretty unique in lots of respects.

It's horrible. My friend has a dog, we went to the pub and it peed all over the floor. The owner told her to leave. Other people in the pub were queuing up to defend her and the dog and say they shouldn't leave. If a toddler had done the same thing, no one would have defended them.

ABitBesottedWithMyDog · 09/02/2022 17:11

Right. Shame. Dogsnet would be a cracker. Lots of bitching about squirrels, I suspect.
