To think dogs shouldn’t be allowed in shops

Has anyone else seen that wilkos are now allowing dogs in their stores? I’m not keen on dogs as it is and wouldn’t really want other shops to start allowing dogs in. What about people that are scared of them? Seriously why do you need to take your dog shopping? I hope no other shops start doing this.

Private space so proprietor can decide what represents their preferences and commercial interests and public can do likewise. Interesting how some people seem to identify their own preferences with 'there's no need' and expect the world to be shaped by their opinion of what it needed.

@ikeepseeingit

I think its' completely up to the store owners and the staff really. It's rare that I've ever seen a dog in a shop other than pets at home though. Even though they are allowed in them. I feel bad for anyone with allergies and phobias. I say this as a dog groomer. Dogs are not for everyone, and if you can't take your dog out for a separate walk from your errands then I don't understand why you have a dog.

Obviously, I would never judge if someone was taking their dog into a shop that allowed them. But the notion that your dog will get stolen if you tie it outside is odd. Just leave it at home! Give your dog a kong to chew on and go to the shops.

I wouldn't have take my dog into shops when he was younger because he wouldn't have liked it at all but I have had dogs that would have behaved themselves.

Its often not as easy as "just give the dog a kong and leave them alone" people who have a dog with separation anxiety would just LOVE to be able to give the dog a kong and leave them at home.

ha ha yes

So people don’t work? They stay with their dogs 24/7 in case someone steals it?

Dh and I both work from home, between us and the 2 teens there is pretty much always someone knocking around the house or we bring them with us. Not so they don't get stolen, I've never really thought about that, they just like someone to be around and we like to be around them.

I personally wouldn't bring them into a shop, one would hate it and the other would pee up everything but if they are well behaved I don't see the issue with dogs in shops.

Some young one near me walks his electric scooter around the supermarket with him, I resume so it doesn't get nicked so yeah people do it with other things too.

Lockheart · 09/02/2022 13:53

children don’t tend to just randomly attack or bite people or jump up at them or poo and wee over the floor!

If you're lucky. You don't want to know how dirty soft play centres can be.

WhatATimeToBeAlive · 09/02/2022 13:53

I don't like dogs and think dogs in shops sounds very unhygienic

Well they're not. What do you think you might catch from a dog? You're more likely to catch something from a child that's been touching everything on display.

LunchBoxPolice · 09/02/2022 13:54

Another example of people treating pets like children. Gross.
Thank god for online shopping.

YanTanTetheraPetheraPimp · 09/02/2022 13:55

I had absolutely no idea that dogs were allowed in shops (other than guide-dogs or assistance dogs).
I would never take mine into one unless it was unavoidable or an emergency simply because I don’t think it’s appropriate. Plenty of people don’t like/are frightened of dogs so I think it’s wrong to expect them to have to do so.

Tynesider007 · 09/02/2022 13:55

There is a gun shop near me that has a pair of labs behind the counter, fabulous, or pet shops, no problem, but shops that sell food and household wares?

No. I think many dogs wouldn't understand they were inside in a big shop and start marking thier scent.

Pedalpushers · 09/02/2022 14:00

People with phobias can't expect the world to revolve around them. If you're so terrified of dogs that you can't be near one in a shop, you are the one with the problem and should seek help for it.

PineappleTart · 09/02/2022 14:00

There is just no need for dogs in shops other than official assistance animals. And that includes people who think if they carry it then somehow that's ok. Pet shops fine but everything else? Nope.

XelaM · 09/02/2022 14:01

Why not?! It's extremely rare to find a dog that isn't potty trained, so I wouldn't expect any "accidents" and some dogs can't be left home alone. Why does it even bother you?

And John Lewis has always allowed dogs

XelaM · 09/02/2022 14:02

@PineappleTart How on Earth does it affect you in any way if a person carries their dog?!

😳 It’s being considerate of others ffs.
SmolCat · 09/02/2022 14:04

I love it, it helps me out massively when a shop is dog friendly. If we’re already walking around town it means I can just pop in rather than go home to drop the dog off and come back again then or another day. But I keep a really close eye on him and wouldn’t allow him to touch anything.

bluechinavase · 09/02/2022 14:04

Here’s a question, for years only assistance dogs were allowed in shops, cafes etc. so what did other dog owners do then? What do you do with your dog when you need to go into a shop that doesn’t allow dogs?

Is there no respite anywhere for us folk who would prefer to shop for clothes without tripping over a lead or picking up a jumper that’s covered in Labrador hair and slobber? We the silent minority (or so it seems) who have to wait longer to be served whilst dogs are discussed and fussed over.

We who can’t enjoy a coffee and a blether with a pal because a dog at the next table is hell bent on letting you know it wants your sandwich.

Is there nowhere left?

My dog marks in new place especially if dogs have been marking there previously. It's nothing to do with being house trained. He wouldn't pee in our house or someone else's but the time we brought him to the pet shop to fit a harness he was peed up something nearly straight away.
Hobbesmanc · 09/02/2022 14:05

John Lewis allow dogs in - along with lots of upmarket brands like Kath Kidson, Lush, Apple etc. It doesn't bother I guess - but in our local John Lewis, there are lots of food and drink gifts at dog height. I'm not worried about dog wee- but I know lots of dogs that slobber and I just don't fancy doggy spit on my Hotel Chocolate box

XelaM · 09/02/2022 14:06

@YanTanTetheraPetheraPimp People should not have to bend over backwards to every irrational phobia someone might have

I'll take 'Things that never happened' for £500 please Alex.

If the shop has a rule of no dogs then it means no dogs. Not no dogs unless you carry them.

XelaM · 09/02/2022 14:07

@RoastedFerret Then your dog needs to be carried 😜

Pedalpushers · 09/02/2022 14:08

@YanTanTetheraPetheraPimp considerate of everyone except the person who might need to bring a dog to a shop for whatever reason?

Nobody has any way of knowing who does or doesn't have a dog phobia. It's one thing to shove your dog in the face of someone who you know is terrified, it's another to make people live their lives around the off chance someone else is scared of something. THAT is inconsiderate.

There’s not a ‘need’ for an enormous number of things. That doesn’t mean that it’s not ok.

Also, what you and I deem ‘a need’ in life are probably very different things. I bet there are plenty of things that you do that I would deem there not to be a ‘need’ for. But it’s your life so go ahead.
