Hunderland · 09/02/2022 01:19

Phone dropped in the North Sea? Everything 'unfortunately' wiped from devices?

YABU - those things really were totally coincidental that happened just after they were told to hand them in

YANBU yeah ...right...

Team Rooney all the way. From the texts they have managed to recover it is clear that Watt was selling the stories. Vardy is aware and involved but I guess it would be harder to prove whether she instructed Watt to do it. She lied in that she said she had always liked Colleen but clearly not if you are calling her a bitch.Would they not be able to trace the payment by the Sun journalist?

Vardy is also a bare faced liar and her performance on loose women was actually cringeworthy. I always wondered at the time why they had given her a platform to speak and not Colleen? She played on being heavily pregnant to gain sympathy.

DrSbaitso · 12/02/2022 10:30

How about if Watt pressed send, but shared the money with Vardy? How might a court view that?

I believe that if a published statement is untrue, but doesn't actually cause extra damage to someone's reputation, that's a defence. Eg, if I say you beat people up and don't walk your dog, and the only untrue thing is that you don't walk your dog, that's a defence.

So maybe Rooney could claim that even if Vardy wasn't the leak personally, she was so close to and complicit with it that it doesn't do her reputation any further damage to claim she did it?

DrSbaitso · 12/02/2022 10:32

Would they not be able to trace the payment by the Sun journalist?

Depends on how it was done and how it appears in the accounts, I guess. She'd have had to declare it for tax reasons if she got over a certain amount from it in the year.

They might have done it to get the press on their side rather than for money.

SisterAgatha · 12/02/2022 10:36

Vardy went ahead to get her name in the paper off Coleens back. Like this whole cases rests on Grin

I also wonder how the other women mentioned in those texts feel about RV now. Wink

Aderyn21 · 12/02/2022 10:39

Are the other women, wives or girlfriends of other footballers?

prh47bridge · 12/02/2022 11:16

Also, I think if it hadn't been MM, that would've been explained in the judgment

It was explained in the judgement - paragraph 71 of the Court of Appeal judgement. It sets out the fact and then says, "This was, at best, an unfortunate lapse of memory on her part, but it does not seem to me to bear on the issues raised in the grounds of appeal, and it has been given no prominence in Associated Newspapers’ oral argument."

Regarding tracing payment, this is a civil case, not a criminal one. The police may be able to trace payments but that isn't available for a case like this. Also, we don't know if there was any payment. Many people leak to the press without payment. Even if there was a payment, tracing it would probably be a breach of the European Convention on Human Rights, for the same reason that journalists cannot be forced to disclose their sources.

Putting aside the fact that we don't know if any payment was involved, I believe the question the court will look at is whether Vardy is responsible for the leak. If that is the case, it doesn't matter whether she leaked herself or someone else leaked on her behalf.
Lndnmummy · 12/02/2022 11:22

But why drag Coleen to court to "clear her name" when she new all along that their was evidence to the contrary. Why sit and cry on national tv and do the whole woo is me with crocodile tears when she had done if? Like why?

Lndnmummy · 12/02/2022 11:22

So undignified, blows my mind

I think her ego. Also she clearly hates CR, as shown in the texts, so I think she was just furious CR was smart enough to realise it was RV or her team and get one over on them.
longwayoff · 12/02/2022 13:26

Many habitual liars paint themselves into a corner and, back against the wall, will still maintain black is white. I don't know why when, to most of us, such behaviour just looks deranged but plenty of people do it and feel very offended if forced to look at reality. I guess she's one of those and nasty with it.

Ooooh @SisterAgatha Who else has been mentioned apart from the agent?
ufucoffee · 12/02/2022 14:03

@SisterAgatha I've just seen them so I know it's Dawn Ward and Leanne Brown. I wouldn't like to get on the wrong side of Dawn Ward.

She might think that even if she loses, the fact that she was prepared to go to court over it was evidence of her innocence.

Yes. In general, habitual liars double down and react with outrage when somebody has clear evidence of their lies. They never accept it and some notable people just manage to keep on going, even in remarkably senior and public positions.

They enjoy their power to state nonsense and have others compelled to accept it because there are no enforceable mechanisms for accountability.

Ah cool. I've seen stronger than "at best", but it got the mention it needed!
metellaestinatrio · 12/02/2022 14:57

@Nordicforest88 oh for the days of black marker pens and photocopying the pages ten times!

Dyrene · 12/02/2022 14:57

There’s something extremely damning about ‘at best an unfortunate lapse of memory’. Masterful understatement.

longwayoff · 12/02/2022 15:19

You're not kidding hadrosaurus and there it is in front of us everyday with no end in sight. Very depressing that even a pretence of sticking to any real facts has been abandoned.

Wise words @longwayoff. I hope our Prime Minister reads them and learns from RV's mistakes.

He hasn't learned from his own, why would he learn from anyone else's? Besides, are they actually mistakes if they don't come to any consequences for him?
PlaydoughBarbershop · 12/02/2022 18:43

I actually laughed out loud when I read this today! It's an excuse my pre-teen son would have come out with!

Weclome · 12/02/2022 18:51

@AndAnotherNewOne

The money wasted on the reputations of women who serve no useful purpose but managed to marry money infuriates me.
CR met WR when they were 12, I think it's a bit unfair to suggest she set out to snare him for his money, I can't imagine he'd have been able to provide her with a luxurious lifestyle at that age.

@DrSbaitso

my dog ate my homework ...but you can't have the dog to check his mouth ...because my tiger then ate my dog ... and a hunter came and shot the tiger in the night as he unlocked his cage and then the front door with his nonopposable thumbs ... and the tiger is now on the wall of someone's house who said his name was Bob III ... but we don't know if it was his real name as he may have been wearing a disguise....

....that lay in the house (of cards) that Rebekah Vardy built!

I think you mean the house that... Rebekah Vardy's account built. Grin
