Why aren't we building home out at see?

There's a population crisis and a lack of affordable homes and space to build etc so how come more countries don't build out from their coasts, or actually out at see. Watching the world spin and virtually a solid half is just sea! Why aren't more countries claiming territory and building their own extensions?

Presumably because it's not that simple?

DickMabutt73962 · 08/02/2022 15:26

Why don't we just move to mars?

ApolloandDaphne · 08/02/2022 15:27

Well that's not exactly a cheap and easy way to build! The sea is deep, choppy and often tidal. I know some places have managed to reclaim land but it takes a huge feat of engineering to do so.

MorningStarling · 08/02/2022 15:28

It's very expensive to reclaim land from the sea. It also has a knock on effect on other areas because it changes the currents and environmental conditions.

It would also be rejected by environmentalists because they'd say it's fixing the symptoms rather than the problems.

Most notable land reclamation schemes are done by countries that have plenty of money on tap and are less interested in environmental issues, such as in the middle east or China.

Squirrelblanket · 08/02/2022 15:29

Or in the desert! 😂

LaurieFairyCake · 08/02/2022 15:29

Huh? Less than 10% of UK is built on Confused

edwinbear · 08/02/2022 15:29

Like the failed $15bn 'World Islands' development in Dubai you mean?

itwasntaparty · 08/02/2022 15:29

Yeah, that would work.

*sea

CeleriacOfTheNight · 08/02/2022 15:30

It's a bit too wet.

REP22 · 08/02/2022 15:31

The fish might get a bit upset. Also, I suspect that the houses would be rather prone to flooding, Rising sea-levels and all that.

Itsalmostanaccessory · 08/02/2022 15:32

The most you can reasonably do is similar to holiday resorts where they build villas out over the shallows.

But building an "extension" containing the hundreds of homes you would need to make it even worth bothering over would be astronomically expensive and create a whole lot of dangers not faced by other homes. Some insurance would simply be impossibly to get.

jcyclops · 08/02/2022 15:32

...because the French would want half the homes we built off our coast Wink

AwkwardPaws27 · 08/02/2022 15:32

Do you mean sea? As in, the ocean?
How? Do you not think the infrastructure, getting gas, electricity, broadband etc, would be considerably more? Who could afford these expensive floating homes? Would people want to live in a home buffeted by waves?

The land is there - its just used for other things. I live in a borough on the outskirts of London for example and we have about 6 golf courses. Why not build on one or two of those first Grin

CocoPancakes · 08/02/2022 15:33

There's plenty of property in this country that could be used as accommodation (either already are, or converting suitable for living). I'd rather make use of some of the empty housing stock before they start chucking estates up in the middle of the English channel.

Newnamefor2021 · 08/02/2022 15:36

Due to cost and the huge environmental impact. As well as ownership rights! Then you add transportation costs. It's not a
Practical idea.

I'm not sure what the positive aspects of something like that would be. We will see more coasts using hydro power and Potential housing along with it. Swansea has had proposals for years but it's so far failed to obtain adequate funding.

JoyDivisionOvenGlovesx · 08/02/2022 15:38

Wut??

Peas252 · 08/02/2022 15:39

They do build houses at sea. They're called yachts and can be yours to own for just a few million pounds

mumwon · 08/02/2022 15:39

increasing height of waves & increasing number of severe storms & flooding & as pp said what about infrastructure & depth of oceans ? & underwater earth quakes & -Oh yes! underwater volcanos (if you are thinking of the Pacific especially)

blyn72 · 08/02/2022 15:41

Some people do live on boats.

How many people would actually like to live out at sea? I certainly wouldn't.

alorslanon · 08/02/2022 15:41

Mate…

User135644 · 08/02/2022 15:42

Or if people stopped having so many kids we wouldn't be so overpopulated.

Whammyyammy · 08/02/2022 15:42

We would all get this proof of delivery from My Heremes......🤔

@alorslanon

Mate…
I think this sums up the thread. That's all that needed to be said really!

Fairly obviously because building out at sea is significantly more difficult and more expensive than building on land.

How would they get Amazon deliveries....?
