Why aren't we building home out at see?

There's a population crisis and a lack of affordable homes and space to build etc so how come more countries don't build out from their coasts, or actually out at see. Watching the world spin and virtually a solid half is just sea! Why aren't more countries claiming territory and building their own extensions?

Wind up? Or stupid? You decide.

Looking forward to the future posts on the property and diy board 'Should I move to Leeds, Sheffield or Dogger?'

AgathaX · 08/02/2022 16:09

Did you give this any thought at all before you posted here, OP?

Shortage of buikding space = build on the sea
Shortage of nurses = employ nursing sharks

...and probably more fish related puns I cannot thing of

England has enough brownfield land for 1m new homes. Plus plenty of underused farmland that could be developed. Solving the housing crisis is perfectly possible but the Tory government prefers to see its core voters enjoy constantly rising house prices

People in cities like Lagos and Hong Kong live on the water I think. And living on canals and rivers is becoming more common. Extreme weather events might be a problem though ?

Lineofconcepcion · 08/02/2022 16:15

Land reclaim happens in Gibraltar from time to time. They are short of space, and Ocean Village, and quite a lot of land beyond Casemates has been reclaimed from the sea. As pp said, it is very expensive to do, and only worthwhile when there is nowhere else to build, which is the case in Gib, but not in the majority of the UK!

Haffiana · 08/02/2022 16:16

Balloons are the answer. Floating homes under a huge balloon. Solar panels on the balloon. Catch condensation for water.

Easy.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 08/02/2022 16:16

The school runs will be interesting. Jet ski, (range rover) rowing boat (bike) or swim (walk)?

Moving house would be literal not just a figure of speech.

AutomaticMoon · 08/02/2022 16:16

@LaurieFairyCake

Huh? Less than 10% of UK is built on Confused
This. I found out how 1% of people own most of the land 😞

And there’s a population drop happening everywhere except Nigeria. Prepare for an empty planet as birth rates are not replacing enough people.

Pembertonrd · 08/02/2022 16:17

@Haffiana yes, Up is the future.
Who knew?

Ratherdogsthanpeople · 08/02/2022 16:17

@tara66

Have you ever studied this matter ? And while you're at it - also study the feasibility of bridge between England and Northern Ireland , which I think was a Boris Johnson idea related to Brexit (it does not seem to be going ahead).
There’s a bridge between Denmark and Sweden, works really well.

Human species has wrecked the land on the planet, let's destruct the oceans as well Confused

onlychildhamster · 08/02/2022 16:19

@SleepingStandingUp I grew up in Singapore; when we studied physical geography, part of our syllabus was about land reclamation!

Since its independence in 1965, Singapore has grown from around 590 km2 to 720km2 in 2014, reclaiming around 22% of its total ground area from the sea

Singapore population in 1965: 1.887 million
Singapore population in 2022: 5.9 million

Singapore home ownership rate : 87.9 % (UK home ownership rate 65%)

So it isn't a land problem in the UK, it is a planning permission/NIMBY problem in the UK.

Why aren't more countries claiming territory and building their own extensions?

Because you can't just claim territory, it is against international law. Hmm
