To have thought most people will have had an iv

I’ve had an iv for kidney infections and would have assumed most had one at some point but apparently not.

@PrivateHall I think they’re trying to avoid what happened with me where the worst birth injury I had with DS1 was where they’d tried to put a line in and I had a contraction…massive bruise halfway up my arm…in the midst of heading for a crash section wasn’t helpful…as I said luckily they pulled DS1 out (and amazingly we were all utterly fine but I got the impression they were expecting to whisk DS1 off).

ChaToilLeam · 07/02/2022 08:13

Never had one!

stuntbubbles · 07/02/2022 08:20

Never until birth. I would assume the norm is to not have had one, given that’s our natural state. Thinking about my family: DM and DB yes, but both of those later in life; DD and DS and DP: no.

Nospringchix · 07/02/2022 08:20

I've had loads. Mainly general anaesthesia for surgery, sedation for medical procedures, saline after surgery plus an IV iron infusion.

Absolutely hate being cannulated due to a bad experience before surgery as a teenager.

x2boys · 07/02/2022 08:21

I have had IV antibiotics during labour and I was also induced twice so might have had something else to induce me .

misspercy · 07/02/2022 08:38

I was about to say, no, not me, then remembered, I did have one once (in an emergency situation).'

womaninatightspot · 07/02/2022 08:38

@womaninatightspot

I've had a few. I'd of assumed that most people would of had one at one point or another. I'd of thought the same about general anasthetics. That most people at some point would need an operation. Thinking about it I'm probably just gerneralising based upon my own experience. It's because I'm so boringly average in so many respects.
Thinking about it my twins recieved IV antibiotics within hours of being born, my middle child had an IV after surgery so only my eldest has never had one. So it's more common than not in my family.
Waxonwaxoff0 · 07/02/2022 09:02

Never had one. I've only ever been in hospital once to give birth.

Livpool · 07/02/2022 11:29

I have loads - most of them when I was pregnant and suffering from HG. I have rubbish veins so it is never pleasant

LunaAndHerMoonDragons · 07/02/2022 11:50

I've had quite a few for various reasons.

That's a terrible thing to happen but does sound like an inexperienced person doing it to be honest, there is no need to do it mid contraction! There is definitely no evidence to support routine cannulation.

SpiderVersed · 07/02/2022 12:36

Loads.

tealandteal · 07/02/2022 14:26

I was cannulated after a PPH but it wasn’t needed, so I’ve not received anything via IV. I’ve also never had a GA.

heyitsthistle · 07/02/2022 14:27

I had an IV when I was induced, but that's it.

Singlebutmarried · 07/02/2022 14:31

Lots

My veins are wrecked and each time it’s harder. Sadly I need IV treatment every few weeks.

I can almost feel my veins retreating every time I enter a hospital.

CandyLeBonBon · 07/02/2022 14:34

Ive had loads too! Can't beat some mainline antibiotics eh?!? Grin

89redballoons · 07/02/2022 14:38

I've had one when I had a general anaesthetic, for an operation to remove abnormal cells on my cervix.

I also had one recently when I was 30 weeks pregnant and caught a sickness bug from my toddler. I couldn't even hold water down and ended up quite dehydrated, so my and my baby's heart rates were a bit elevated. So I got IV anti-sickness drugs and also IV fluid. It was amazing how much better I felt afterwards!

Hamjamwich · 07/02/2022 14:48

No

Crunchymum · 18/02/2022 14:04

Once when in labour DC1 (augmented labour, stalled at 7cm, needed the drip)

DC1 actually need IV fluids when he Wass about 4 due to severe dehydration following a horrid sickness bug.

Sadly I have a chronic health condition and future / potential treatments could end up being intravenous.

Marmite27 · 18/02/2022 14:06

I had them when I gave birth both times. First for fluid and second for a section.

DC2 had one for IV antibiotics when they had septic arthritis at 2.

Crunchymum · 18/02/2022 14:09

DC3 was also given IV antibiotics at birth. There was an undiagnosed genetic condition but baby was treated with AB intravenously as a precaution, whilst they underwent all the various tests for diagnosis.

Back to first baby - my cannula came out during labour and instead of being put back in my hand it was put into vein in wrist. Bruising was so bad the HV took me aside to ask about "my injury" when she came to see baby at home.

HollaHolla · 18/02/2022 14:11

I've been unfortunate enough to need a few surgeries, so yes - maybe about a dozen hospital stays. Each time you're cannulated, and most of those I've ended up with IVs for antibiotics/post surgical, etc.
My dad has had joint replacements, so yes. Mum sepsis, so yes too.

Probably my sister had something when she had kids. My brother is 47, and has never had to be in hospital for anything - lucky thing! My nieces and nephews haven't either (except one of my nephews was a preemie, so maybe then?)

I think saying most people have had one, is not really likely.

Aprilx · 18/02/2022 14:42

What a strange thing to presume! Of course most people have not had an IV. But odd to have any thoughts on it anyway.

autumnboys · 18/02/2022 14:51

I’ve been cannulated for all three labours and I think as well when I had to stay in overnight after an allergic reaction.

Ds3 had fluids through a line when he was very unwell with d&v and couldn’t keep dioralyte down.

housemaus · 18/02/2022 15:15

Do you have one if you have a GA? If so yes I must have, had an operation when I was a kid.
