To have thought most people will have had an iv

Marchon77 · 06/02/2022 22:38

I’ve had an iv for kidney infections and would have assumed most had one at some point but apparently not.

OP posts:
Montague22 · 07/02/2022 03:43

I have.
My 3 kids have.
DH hasn’t.

Bunnycat101 · 07/02/2022 04:12

Only once with one of my labours. Husband never has. One of my children was close when they had a horrendous vomiting bug but didn’t need it in the end.

Like others I don’t think it is that common unless you’ve been in hospital a fair amount.

SquirrelG · 07/02/2022 04:33

I've got to the age of 62 without ever having one.

thewhatsit · 07/02/2022 04:35

In childbirth, yes. I’d still say no about “most people” though. Until I’d given birth I hadn’t stepped foot inside a hospital since I was tiny. I never go to the GP. Children never needed to go to the GP even. DH never been to the GP in the years I’ve known him and has never been hospitalised in his life.

EishetChayil · 07/02/2022 07:15

I hadn't had one until I had an epidural aged 39.

ChildHeadache · 07/02/2022 07:30

I think I'm more surprised at kids who have never needed a GP than the thought lots of people have had IVs!

I do t think cannulas are standard for child birth so most woman wouldn't have had one either.

All women in labour get the joy of two cannulas at my trust. It's in case they need it, and it's safer than leaving them without one, and then struggling to cannulate them if they do start to bleed.

And no OP, I've never had an IV.[/quote]
I’m sure that’s classed as poor practice.

Yes I had a cannula for fluids when I had food posion, for pain meds for gall stones, then my op to remove it. In labour for DD1 to try and speed things up, again when I was treated a week later for sepsis and after the birth of my second child when I had to have the placenta manually removed.

Fallagain · 07/02/2022 07:39

I don’t think DH has. DD1 did when she 2yrs old and DD2 hasn’t had one.

PrincessPaws · 07/02/2022 07:40

Nope, only recently for an iron infusion but made it 40 odd years without needing one

welshpolarbear · 07/02/2022 07:41

So many times I wouldn't be able to tell you! 16 operations, countless iron infusions.

aLilNonnyMouse · 07/02/2022 07:44

I also thought it would be more common. I've been cannulated around 40-50 times.

Everydaydayisaschoolday · 07/02/2022 07:50

I've had 2 children without any IVs. I had my first last year at the age of 60. My youngest child has had one but the oldest and DH haven't. So in this family it's 50:50.

CandidClarisse · 07/02/2022 07:51

No and I'm 41

DiscordandRhyme · 07/02/2022 07:52

I've had several but practically all during it after Labour.

SockQueen · 07/02/2022 07:52

I've had one for each of my labours, and for two operations (one as a child). Those are the only times I've been in hospital.

DH had a couple around the time of his cancer diagnosis, then had a PICC line for his chemo etc.

DC (5&2) have never had one.

WeAllHaveWings · 07/02/2022 07:54

I am 53 and only had one, at 36 during child birth.

Tdcp · 07/02/2022 07:54

I've had quite a few but they all related to the same pregnancy when I was 31.

bigbluebus · 07/02/2022 07:55

No, I haven't. I'm 58 and have had 2 DC's.

TheTempest · 07/02/2022 07:57

Yes a lot. I’d say at least 30-40 times. I had so many after a disastrous birth and PPH and them emergency hysterectomy that I had a central line. DH twice I think for operations, DD never. She is so healthy though she’s only been Ill twice ever, and she’s 12!

That is absolutely ridiculous, 'little' interventions like this and lack of trust in childbirth lead to the iatrogenic process of actually causing things to go wrong. If someone is in spontaneous labour and has an uncomplicated pregnancy, it is absolutely ludicrous to put them through the discomfort of 2 cannulae for absolutely no reason. This is not evidence based at all. I really wish women and midwives would start refusing.

Seeline · 07/02/2022 08:06

I had one during my first labour, but not my second. I also had one after my first labour for a blood transfusion. DS had one in NICU.

I've had two operations but didn't have one for either of those.

I suspect DH had one when he had his burst appendix removed as a teen. DD has never had one.

DelurkingAJ · 07/02/2022 08:08

Never here and I’ve given birth twice. They were trying to get a line into me with DS1 but managed to haul him out before they got the line in!

picklemewalnuts · 07/02/2022 08:08

I've had three - wisdom teeth operation, gynae op and childbirth. I don't consider myself unhealthy or unlucky.
DS1 and 2 both had one/two when they were little- they wouldn't remember it now.
DH a has never had one.

The four DC I fostered had three between the 4. Two had operations as babies, the third was very ill with meningitis as a baby.

So in my household, DH is the odd one out. Most people in my household have had an IV.

PrivateHall · 07/02/2022 08:08

OP I had one for induction of labour and another when I was admitted with gallstones. DH has never needed one, one DC did as a newborn for IV antibiotics and again for a procedure a year later, the other 2 DC have never been in hospital.

Thinking to my wider family, most of my immediate family have had at least one surgery each so would have had a cannula for that. I haven't had surgery as yet (touch wood!).

FluffyBooBoo · 07/02/2022 08:11

My dad has, but nobody else in my immediate family. I don't think most people have.
