To have thought most people will have had an iv

I’ve had an iv for kidney infections and would have assumed most had one at some point but apparently not.

OP posts:

Not me

OfstedOffred · 06/02/2022 23:13

Actually no I have had an IV. I had to have one when I had a complicated m/c with retained products.

UmbilicusProfundus · 06/02/2022 23:14

Bit random! Why are you asking the question OP? FWIW I have on a couple of ocassions

Zazdar · 06/02/2022 23:15

No, never. Just asked my husband and he hasn’t either.

KatherineofGaunt · 06/02/2022 23:16

I had two cannulas for childbirth but they weren't needed. I've also had an antihistamine IV. It made me feel terribly dizzy but the person I told didn't believe me Confused Not sure why not or even if it mattered I was dizzy.

Thinking about it, two good friends have had IVs and my dad but I can't think of anyone else I know who has.

ChampionOfTheSun · 06/02/2022 23:18

Lots of times here. But also know people who haven't.

steff13 · 06/02/2022 23:19

I have. Here when you get an epidural you have to have an IV of fluids as well. I went to the ER in 2020 and had to have intravenous antibiotics and pain medication. Only one of my kids had ever had an IV, and I don't think my husband ever has.

Kite22 · 06/02/2022 23:19

Is that what I might call a drip ?

I had one after one of my dc was born, but not for anything else.
There are 7 adults in my household and I am the only one who has had one..... so on that massive survey Wink I'd say no, not 'most'.

TheDoveFromAboveCooCoo · 06/02/2022 23:20

3 I think? One for DD1 (group b strep so needed antibiotics during labour); one for iv antibiotics for an infected cat bite that was starting to track up my arm and turn to blood poisoning and again for DD2 antibiotics for GBS.

steff13 · 06/02/2022 23:20

IV is short for intravenous, for those who are confused.

CrocodilesCry · 06/02/2022 23:20

Never have, not ever been in hospital touch wood.

Lanaaaa · 06/02/2022 23:23

Both times I had a baby, my first DC I had one in each hand - I had pre-eclampsia so I probably had all sorts going in there. It was awful, so sore, and I couldn’t get comfortable or sleep properly

JurgensCakeBabyJesus · 06/02/2022 23:25

Only once for induction because my waters broke early and labour wasn't progressing.

bindud · 06/02/2022 23:25

too many to count

ZenNudist · 06/02/2022 23:26

No

BonnieConnie · 06/02/2022 23:28

What a strange thing to presume. Most people haven't had to have drugs intravenously in hospital no.

elliejjtiny · 06/02/2022 23:29

I’ve had loads. Ds1 has had 1, ds2 has had 2, ds3 has had 1, ds4 has had more than me, ds5 has had a few.

chinateapot · 06/02/2022 23:30

Yes, all my family. I had sepsis and 7l PPH with dd1 and she had scbu admission needing iv antibiotics, plus then later had pneumonia leading to sepsis. Husband had weird hepatitis a few years ago, cause unknown. And Dd2 has been through chemo and still has scans every few months needing iv contrast so she’s had more iv access than I can count.

We’ve had our money’s worth out of the NHS!

I agree though, would have thought most adults would have especially once you get to middle age or older. Anyone who’s had surgery will have probably, many who’ve had a baby etc.

DontWantTheRivalry · 06/02/2022 23:31

You don’t ‘have’ an IV.

IV is the term used to describe one of the ways in which fluids/drugs can be given to a patient.

So are asking if people have been cannulated?

Or are you asking whether they’ve had IV fluids and/or IV drugs?

I’ve been cannulated numerous times, sometimes I needed something given to me intravenously and other times I didn’t.

PiesNotGuys · 06/02/2022 23:33

I’ve had two in my life but both for childhood surgeries, so I haven’t had one in over 30 years. Only one of my dc has had one, also in childhood.

I’d expect the need for someone to have intravenous drugs to be the exception rather than the rule?

Nomoreusernames1244 · 06/02/2022 23:33

I doubt "most people" have been cannulated let alone cannulated specifically to receive saline

Iv’s aren’t just to give saline Hmm

There are all sorts of reasons, saline only being one.

Lookforwardtosummer · 06/02/2022 23:35

I've had a few over the years, my DH hasn't.

Bagadverts · 06/02/2022 23:38

Both cannulated and had IV fluid/drugs over the years. Not surprised many haven’t. A lot of people lead uneventful lives as far as health goes which is great.

womaninatightspot · 06/02/2022 23:39

I've had a few. I'd of assumed that most people would of had one at one point or another. I'd of thought the same about general anasthetics. That most people at some point would need an operation. Thinking about it I'm probably just gerneralising based upon my own experience. It's because I'm so boringly average in so many respects.

AllLopsided · 06/02/2022 23:40

Yes I've had loads - 8 surgeries in 8 years, canulated for them all, plus a few A&E trips, wisdom teeth out under sedation, an iron infusion and now IV meds at the pain clinic every 2/3 weeks. No kids though. I probably didn't have one till I was in my late 30s. I look after my veins Grin
