To have thought most people will have had an iv

I’ve had an iv for kidney infections and would have assumed most had one at some point but apparently not.

Freetodowhatiwant · 06/02/2022 23:42

I didnt have one until I was 37 and under going pioneering treatment for miscarriages. It was really surreal having my first ever drip when I didn’t actually need one for a medical emergency. Sitting in a clinic in Surrey. Since then however I’ve had a good few - CS x 2, endometriosis op, one appendix out, two iron-deficiency blood transfusions….

MrsToothyBitch · 06/02/2022 23:44

Nope, never. DP too. My parents I think so.

sparepantsandtoothbrush · 06/02/2022 23:44

@BonnieConnie

What a strange thing to presume. Most people haven't had to have drugs intravenously in hospital no.

Brainstorm21 · 06/02/2022 23:45

Nope..never until last week when nurses looked very disapprovingly at my poor veins 😀

Flowersandhearts · 06/02/2022 23:47

I had an IV for a general anaesthetic for a dental operation. That has been my only IV/drip so far (I haven't given birth though and imagine IVs are quite common for those that have).

Zeewest · 06/02/2022 23:48

69, never had one. Only been in hospital twice, for childbirth

BlackeyedSusan · 06/02/2022 23:49

for having both kids as I had strep B infections.

ClariceQuiff · 06/02/2022 23:49

Yes, been cannulated to buggery more than once in my life!

Heartofglass12345 · 06/02/2022 23:51

I had one when in labour both times. Also one for fluids when I had food stuck in my throat and couldn't drink anything lol

Chely · 06/02/2022 23:51

I've had several, dh has and our eldest child.

Steelesauce · 06/02/2022 23:55

Yes, I've had loads. Various operations, 3x children, IV antibiotics etc.

uncomfortablydumb53 · 06/02/2022 23:56

Yes, too many to count

blyn72 · 06/02/2022 23:59
@jimmyreckon

I do t think cannulas are standard for child birth so most woman wouldn't have had one either.

All women in labour get the joy of two cannulas at my trust. It's in case they need it, and it's safer than leaving them without one, and then struggling to cannulate them if they do start to bleed.

And no OP, I've never had an IV.
I'm buggered if I would have one while in labour.

I have had two IVs in recent years, following accidents which left me concussed; with the first one I was unconscious.

Both times I had terrible diarrhoea whilst on the drip which made life in hospital terribly difficult and miserable. I have said I will never be on an iv again though I suppose I might have to one day. I hope not.

PastMyBestBeforeDate · 07/02/2022 00:03

I made it until my late 30s without one.

giveyou2reasons · 07/02/2022 00:07

I've made it to my 40s without doing so. Nearly-50yo DH has had one many, many times, though.

BashfulClam · 07/02/2022 01:05

Nope never had one.

Trisolaris · 07/02/2022 01:09

So many times.

DropYourSword · 07/02/2022 01:10

What else are you thinking could be given IV that isn't a drug? Fluids and dyes are still technically classified as drugs.

msbevvy · 07/02/2022 01:12

I'm struggling to think of anyone I know that hasn't had one.
My poor DH's veins have got so bad that he once had to have one in his foot.

evilharpy · 07/02/2022 01:22

I've had two. One in labour but only because my planned home birth went to shit and I ended up in theatre. No idea what (if anything) they gave me through it. The other was for a GA for surgery.

Both times they tried my left hand, both times it tissued and had to be redone in my right hand. First time my hand swelled up massively, second time the bruising went halfway up my arm and the anaesthetist told me never to let anyone try and cannulate my left hand again Grin

My husband has never had one. He's had a GA for a wisdom tooth extraction but only via mask.

Redglitter · 07/02/2022 01:40

I've been connected to an IV for up to a fortnight at a time on several occasions. Pain in the arse having to trundle it along behind me everytime I left my bed.

MrsDrSpencerReid · 07/02/2022 01:41

I’ve had loads - 2 hyperemesis pregnancies, 2 births, Crohn’s disease

DH is a Type 1 Diabetic so has also had loads.

DD has had 1 when she broke her arm, DS hasn’t had one.

phoenixrosehere · 07/02/2022 01:51

Not until I had children. First due to an unnecessary induction that led to an emcs. I took years for the scars to fade away thanks to a doctor who ignored me when I said which hand to put it in because I have tiny veins that like to move which I know from having my blood drawn over the years. It takes three tries for him to get it right and by the end both my hands and wrists are covered with blood bruises that it looked like I had been held captive. Second time after having second due to needing iron transfusions. I supposedly lost enough blood to make me anemic. They listened to me this time but it took five tries. Two nurses gave it a go and then they called for a doctor who did get it but also ended up shooting blood across the room, almost hitting my son who was a few feet away asleep in his car seat. The look on her face was priceless and I was laughing, reassuring her it was ok and that at least it’s finally in.

newnameforthis76 · 07/02/2022 02:37

Plenty of people have never even spent a day in hospital, let alone been hooked up to an IV drip while they were there. Why does this matter to you?!

ShallWeTalkAboutBruno · 07/02/2022 03:07

I have, when I had sepsis. DD1 once had to have antibiotics intravenously. DH and my other 2 DC have never had to.
