Distinct lack of scientific advisors explaining the change in policy on Covid

No Downing Street press conference to discuss them.

Notonthestairs · 10/02/2022 08:25

The difference between law & advice is employers and employment law protections.

Very difficult to believe that the U.K. is standing in solidarity against Putin while being a world centre for Russian money laundering.

I was amused to hear this morning that Johnson has gone to Brussels to tell the EU that firm lines must be "drawn in the snow" over Putin. I fear that his mixed metaphor will be greeted with M. van der Leyen pointing out that lines in the snow disappear when the snow melts, unlike lines in the sand!

I have a feeling that Chris Willey, Patrick Valance and (if still in post) Jonathan Van Tam would have something very frank to say if they were allowed anywhere near that very expensive podium. They might point out that the latest R for the South East is between 1 and 1.3: i.e. the infection rate is, in all probability, currently growing in the most populated part of the UK.
Notonthestairs · 10/02/2022 08:31

Did anyone expect the Conservatives to tackle Russian money laundering?

Tom Tugendgat has been pro-active in this area, and junior minster Lord Agnew resigned over the issue, but there's inaction at the top.

The problem with BJ's inability to use language properly is that it's not only amusing: he is in a position where it's very dangerous. Coupled with his inability to master a brief, it can be tragic (cf. Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe). I see him described on MN and elsewhere as "witty". He really isn't - he flings words around indiscriminately, instead of weighing them and proceeding with due caution. He has a thin veneer of reading and pseudo-culture, but his laziness and self-esteem are far more deeply entrenched.

There's a reminder of this in an article by Jon Allsop in yesterday's Guardian - when BJ was challenged over his derogatory comments about Hillary Clinton, he replied, "there is such a rich thesaurus now of things that I have said” that “it would really take me too long to engage in a full, global itinerary of apology to all concerned.” Many syllables strung together to say "fuck off, I'll do what I want." And that was in 2016...

They are not known for biting the hand that feeds them.

Agreed.

DePfeffoff · 10/02/2022 10:32

Furthermore, there was nothing from Johnson yesterday about plans for tackling the next variant of Coronavirus, which the WHO has warned could be worse than any variant that we have yet seen

This is what is seriously worrying. Because how can he realistically even expect to stand at a podium again and tell people they have to take precautions to stop the spread of infection? The whole country will assume he has no intention of doing that himself and it will be meaningless.

DePfeffoff · 10/02/2022 10:34

It received little publicity, but those who imagine Covid is all over now should note yesterday's publication of data by the ONS that 44,000 2- to 11-year-olds in the country are believed to have long COVID, as are 73,000 12- to 16-year-olds - with symptoms such as brain fog and extreme lethargy that can often last for months.

I agree. To say nothing of the potential link between Covid and childhood diabetes - www.imperial.ac.uk/news/201473/covid-19-linked-increase-type-diabetes-children/

No need to, we had freedom day in the summer and it was made quite clear then that none of the restrictions on our freedom would be reintroduced.

John Major accuses Boris Johnson of breaking the law: “Brazen excuses were dreamed up. Day after day the public was asked to believe the unbelievable. Ministers were sent out to defend the indefensible- making themselves look gullible or foolish.”

'Brazen excuses were dreamed up. Day after day the public was asked to believe the unbelievable'

Was he talking about his 5year affair with Edwina Currie?

He's gone to NATO in Brussels hasn't he? Is he popping in to see the EU as well?

This deflection is getting beyond pathetic now. If Lady Major can manage to put that behind her the rest of us should able to. Especially when it’s used as a feeble attempt to defend the arch adulterer who doesn’t even knew how many children he’s got.

He wasn't pulling any punches.

How can he make a speech about brazen excuses! It is beyond me. Has he no self awareness, didn't anyone tell him he'd ironically make a right fool of himself saying others made fools of themselves?!

DuncinToffee · 10/02/2022 12:19

You are right FatFredsFriedEgg, my post seem to have been one of his milder punches.

CryingAtTheDiscotheque · 10/02/2022 12:21

Are affairs like parties?

So for instance I know that if you are at a party for less than 25minutes you are not there, so if an affair is less than 5 years is it not an affair?

Peregrina · 10/02/2022 12:33

Is it breaking the law? If so, Johnson ought to watch his step with untold number of adulterous affairs. His second wife was pregnant while still married to his first. When married to his second he then had a child who he barely acknowledges, and then we have affairs like that with Jennifer Arcuri while still married. Wilfred was conceived before he sorted out his second divorce.

countrygirl99 · 10/02/2022 12:34

I thought jgw was meant to do the satire posts?

SueSaid · 10/02/2022 12:41

I know! I just cannot believe that anyone is giving anything that John Major has to say any credibility Grin.
