Megan Thee Stallion

OK I’m showing my age but I have just seen some videos of this ‘musician/singer’, I’m completely stunned. How on earth are our kids supposed to have standards when this crap is being peddled as music.

In the olden days Madonna was a rebel, I feel so sorry for our girls as they see these ‘role models’ daily! Dreadful!

@DickMabutt73962 It was a throwaway comment on a thread on Mumsnet! I don't know who MTS is trying to appeal to, but I assume it is 15 year old girls.

I really don't know why you had to fire your remarks at me. Unless you're a huge fan of Megan The Stallion and took my words as a slight against her, in which case you really need to grow up.

And so was mine, you're the one who dragged it out by throwing your credentials around 🤷🏽‍♀️

Matpayhelp2022 · 05/02/2022 20:43

I listen to MTS and many others… I have an apple playlist featuring many called high maintenance! Check it out it’s great for work outs.

Me
38 female surgeon
My best friend
38 female accountant
My SIL
26 female administrative/job centre worker

Literally millions of people with varying in judgemental backgrounds. Just because they are not in your bubble doesn’t mean they don’t exist.

debbrianna · 05/02/2022 21:29

@BorderlineHappy

I enjoy both women’s music but why does Madonna get a pass but Megan Thee Stallion doesn’t? Please explain.

@phoenixrosehere Madonna never ever got a free pass on anything.
In the 90s she was called Grandma, she was 38.They would never do that to Beyonce or anyone else.

@Quirkyme shes doing it because of ageism. You only have to look at the male rappers commenting on her photos. They have no right to comment on anything.Same as you if you dont like it,look away.

Interestingly enough Beyoncé was being called that and the only older person at the time, wait for it bully Pink.
debbrianna · 05/02/2022 21:31

Don't come for me about Pink being a bully. She bullied every young person who don't fit her esthetics.

Latara · 05/02/2022 21:45

I like some of Megan's music as well as older rap music.
I also like Sigrid who is a very different type of female artist to Megan, she tends to perform to guitar in jeans & tshirts.
Both Megan & Sigrid sing about their sex lives as they are grown women.
You don't hear anything controversial about Sigrid though - as she is White maybe?

I don't see a problem with WAP and associated music and videos. I'm an adult woman who can watch and listen to anything, if you have a problem with your kids watching it then stop them.

But my favourite music is still trance & drum n bass.... in the 90s I was a raver into old school rave, trance & jungle which is what we called drum n bass; if you weren't into spice girls / take that (too uncool) or indie music you were usually a raver.... people said the music encouraged drug culture among youngsters which is true but so did music in the 60s!

And I remember going out half undressed in my clubbing gear, I do miss being so slim!

EllaVaNight · 05/02/2022 23:08

Maybe. But it's also an apt phrase as it suggests never having matured past the phase of being desperate to look cool and hip and oh so different from the boring old pearl clutchers who recognise the pornification of 'female empowerment' as the sick misogyny that it is. I dont think anyone's done that or referred to themselves as cool. Fwiw I don't agree with the phrase pearl clutchers either, people should just say what they mean.

PandoraRocks · 06/02/2022 01:43

I'm with you OP. Never even heard of this "artist" till I watched a Youtube video. Jesus! Just pure filth - the swearing and pornification of the female body.

Let's be honest this is talentless dross. It's a joke and she's laughing all the way to the bank. I feel really sorry for people who think this is music. Christ you must be deprived.

Similar things said about Madonna in her time, interesting enough.

I do find it interesting how if some of you don’t like something you go to the extreme about calling it not music and saying how you weep for the generation and the people that listen to it as if that is not insulting or a nasty thing to say to people that do. That says more about the type of people you are than those that do. You can say you don’t like certain music without ridiculing the people that do.

As I said you are not their target audience, they are hugely successful artists, your contempt for them will not stop them making music
I don't have any contempt for MTS and I don't give a shit whether she makes music or not tbh.

CosmosLily · 06/02/2022 08:56

Phoenixrosehere 100%. Whenever someone says anything like that, I immediately assume they listen to very very boring music and anything out of the ordinary to them is "vile". It just smacks of being a music snob.

I feel really sorry for people who can't appreciate different types of music. She is talented. To be able to write songs and rap well is a talent, whether you like the style of music or not.
BeckyWithTheGoodHair010101 · 06/02/2022 10:19

@User135644 haha yes that too. I was horrified at the WAP lyrics - only just discovered them recently. Some of the younger people in my office asked me to listen to it as they wanted to see my face (and laugh), which was pretty much like this Shock all the way through. In my younger years I thought my neck my back was hilarious though!

phoenixrosehere · 06/02/2022 10:30

In my younger years I thought my neck my back was hilarious though!

So did I when I heard it and laughed when I heard WAP. I saw it more as a tongue in cheek type thing, I didn’t take it seriously, why should I? It reminded me of the SNL songs with Justin Timberlake and Andy Samberg.

FabriqueBelgique · 06/02/2022 10:58
@FabriqueBelgique

Then can you explain to me why you are so “comfortable with porn”? Women getting degraded, choked, slapped, in nearly every porn video now? Look at the front page of Pornhub. Why else do you feel comfortable with that? If it’s not to be cool then explain why?
I’m actually into rough stuff myself (shocker) and understand the difference between that and actual domestic violence. I understand why you automatically are repulsed by it though. There was a time I would have been.

By the way “being okay with porn” doesn’t mean the industry doesn’t have huge issues. It also doesn’t mean I open up Porn Hub at all. Porn doesn’t automatically = Porn Hub.

There’s a big wide world out there.

FabriqueBelgique · 06/02/2022 11:00

@foxgoosefinch I’m also way way past the age of being “cool” or caring about “cool”.

NannyOggsWhiskyStash · 06/02/2022 11:05

Personally I find it quite empowering. Admittedly the video is OTT, but women singing about expecting pleasure, what's wrong with that?

DolphinFC · 06/02/2022 13:19

Somebody made a point a few pages back. Why does female empowerment look exactly like male sexual fantasies?

Is it coincidence or are there other mechanisms at work?

People can feel empowered by whatever they want, I just find it strange that dressing and moving in the exact way men most women to is empowering for women.

PWYP76 · 06/02/2022 17:05

Carry on being outraged, OP. You say you can't understand why anyone would listen to her, yet she has a huge fan base.

You say you feel sorry for teenage girls having her as a role model yet, at their age. I decided on my own role model, which actually wouldn't have been the likes of MTS.

There seems to be a lot of people in here who don't know what the fuck they are talking about, have no clue about that type of music genre but still insist they are rightHmm

Like was mentioned upthread, if it's not for you, it's not for you. Why the hoohah? Why the speaking over people who are giving you their reasons as to why they listen to it?

It's so closed minded to dismiss the fact that people listen to it, whether you like that particular type of music, or not.

If a woman wants to talk about a man's dick.. That's her perogative. If a woman wants to wear next to nothing.. That's her perogative. Stop trying to police something that you know nothing about. And stop the faux pearl clutching. It's pathetic!

User135644 · 06/02/2022 17:10

there is no doubt that overtly sexual black women seem to anger a number of white feminists and they are so a little too passionate about it

Whoever it is (race or gender) singing about sex is pretty low rent. The odd song, fine, but it gets old very quick and it's trashy.

Marmarind · 06/02/2022 18:57

But you know, it’s actually OK to not be cool with porn culture or to think it’s super for women. You are grown ups, and grown up women don’t have to pretend to like porn just to look popular and cool.

It's strange that you think all adult women who enjoy porn (although can admit the issues) are simply "pretending".

Marmarind · 06/02/2022 19:03

Her lyrics aren't about female pleasure actually.

Her lyrics aren't about pleasure because they mention liking pain? Some people enjoy some pain during sex. I own a spanking paddle, I'm not that into it, but my male partner enjoys it.

The idea that pleasure and pain are mutually exclusive is not based in reality.

Also "beating" does not always mean getting punched/beaten up. "He wanted to beat her" in the UK at least can mean "He wanted to fuck her", "beat" being another word for "sex". "Beat the pussy up" more regularly used in America is just a reference to PIV sex that isn't soft, slow, and romantic.

DolphinFC · 06/02/2022 20:15

Christ on bike things are bad for women when even women don't see a problem with the phrase "Beat the pussy up".

I can't begin to say how happy I am I don't a daughter. I couldn't bear for her to grow up in world where fucking God awful phrase is considered an acceptable term for sex.

phoenixrosehere · 06/02/2022 21:21

@DolphinFC

Um.. Meghan wasn’t the first to use that phrase. I first heard it in the early 2000 and I was a teenager yet somehow I including many other women were and are able to live decent lives and not be tarnished by song lyrics.

MadForBurpees · 06/02/2022 21:35

Here's something for you. I have just watched the remix video of fester skank by Lethal Bizzle. Great tune. No white people in that video. Doesn't matter. Men fully clothed. Women sexualised and half naked. So are the white middle class women responsible for this? Have they got to French Montana as well?
