OK I’m showing my age but I have just seen some videos of this ‘musician/singer’, I’m completely stunned. How on earth are our kids supposed to have standards when this crap is being peddled as music.

In the olden days Madonna was a rebel, I feel so sorry for our girls as they see these ‘role models’ daily! Dreadful!

@BorderlineHappy

Back in the day, Madonna was not a role model, because I could not relate to her. And I doubt MTS would have been one, either. *@Blackisblackisblack* I have to disagree. Madonna is a huge role model. She done things her way,she wasn't a puppet. She made it ok for women to be sexual and not to be afraid of your fantasy. That was a huge undertaking at the time.
What are you disagreeing about?

PP said Madonna wasn't her role model...and you disagree?

As a Black woman, I can assure you that while I liked some of Madonna's songs, she wasn't on my radar or that of anyone I know as either any sort of role model or someone who made it okay for any woman I know to do anything. We had no idea or cared about what Madonna was doing or not outside the few songs we sang. I still don't, unless I read about her in threads like this.

There are different worlds outside one's own, you know.

SlidingInto2022sDMs · 04/02/2022 11:57

or someone who made it okay for any woman I know to do anything.

And by that, I mean both women I know personally and those I didn't, who were on my radar. Like other celebrities.

SafeMove · 04/02/2022 12:14

I just watched the WAP video and think I totally missed the point as I was distracted by the very strange nails.

SaySomethingMan · 04/02/2022 12:23

@CallMeNutribullet never heard those lyrics.
I asked DH yesterday after I read several comments saying rap music is all about men and their members. He’s listened to a lot of rap music over his lifetime and his response was “what?!”

There is a massive range to choose from though so I’m guessing I suppose long before we met, we were choosing the ones that talk don’t about penises.

I bet Ice Cube has way many more tracks that don’t talk about his penis? Smile

SaySomethingMan · 04/02/2022 12:23
@SaySomethingMan

Right, so despite nobody having said anything remotely like any of that, black women artists are being sexually objectified by white women?

Or is women, both white and black but especially blank women, being sexualised and objectified in crude ways to sell entertainment - random thought here I know - actually down to a whole global history of white male oppression, misogyny and exploitation of women’s bodies?

It’s amazing how far some women will go to blame a culture of toxic sexism on other women rather than address the real source.
I’m afraid you lost me completely.

LittleGwyneth · 04/02/2022 13:07

The only person who is obliged to be a role model for your child is you.

Your children aren't going to like the exact same music you did.

Not everything has to appeal to everyone.

Female sexuality is not inherently bad or wrong.

If you don't like it, don't listen to it. If your teenager doesn't like it, she doesn't have to listen to it.

Madonna still exists. Her entire back catalogue is on Spotify. It's not either or. Young women are not being deprived of anything. There has never been more choice than there is now.

Mookie81 · 04/02/2022 16:48

@VladmirsPoutine

She doesn't make music for you. If she was popular on mumsnet then she'd be making a mistake. When will white women learn to leave successful prominent dark skinned black women alone. She is not the first to do this; for some reason and I can't figure it out - seems she, Cardi B, Beyonce are always dragged on this site but Madonna was an angel. I wonder, I can't put my finger on it what separates those women. I just don't know what it might be.
Tell me about it- Madonna is a 'rebel' but Megan is scum of the earth. Tale as old as time.
Mookie81 · 04/02/2022 17:09

@VladmirsPoutine

You and anyone else who thinks this is a black vs white issue is deluded.

It's not a 'black' vs 'white' issue. It's a specific form of misogynoir white women are exceptionally skilled at perpetuating. If I had a penny for every time I'd witnessed it IRL and/or online I could probably pay the country's energy bills till 3033. Just look at how this thread has gone. Even the OP states that Madonna was merely a rebel but apparently Megan is ruining the children. That's right Megan is abusing the innocence of children - what an evil black woman. It's always the same schtick and no the 'My mother's best friend's neighbours dentist once walked passed a black man' defence isn't going to cut it. I'm half white - I don't care; white women are the issue.

As someone who is also mixed, I completely agree with you. I've been called a nigger in a racial attack and this bullshit is way more insidious, worrying and dangerous in my eyes.
Mumoblue · 04/02/2022 17:13

This is ridiculous pearl-clutching. 🙄

It’s not her responsibility to be a role model for your kids. And really, she’s living her life the way she wants to. There’s nothing wrong with that.

But hey I guess dancing in skimpy clothes is somehow rebellious when Madonna does it but not okay when Megan Thee Stallion does it? Hmmm.

Some of these atrocious acts that the kids like these days just remind me of that move Idiocracy. It's just a race to the bottom. Our culture is going to hell.

@Interrobanger

The thing that’s most upsetting about MTS is that she is insanely talented. She’s been a battle rapper for years and she’s an amazing lyricist.

It’s a testament to our shorty society that she couldn’t get to where she is on pure talent alone and she had to collude in her own objectification in order to be heard.

Plenty of female singers are very popular without resorting to that.
Chasingaftermidnight · 04/02/2022 17:27

I’m not sure that the WAP video is much more risqué than popular videos from when I was a teenager 20 years ago - Eric Prydz and Call on me, Christina Aguilera and Dirrty, Britney Spears and I’m a slave 4 u, Khia and My Neck, My Back, for example.

alicesfavouritepen · 04/02/2022 17:36

Do you have any examples @User135644 ?

Yeah all those were porn culture too. And so was some of Madonna’s shows and photo output tbh, I’m not keen on her Sex stuff either, but at least she stopped short of singing about her wet pussy - and most of her 80s stuff was actually rather coy and twee (La Isla Bonita, Dear Jessie etc.)

I’m assuming all the posters blathering about “pearl clutching” are all “cool girl” wannabes who are just super OK with porn. Because I can think of no other reason why anyone would be so pleased about women, especially black women who already face enough barriers to success, having to reduce themselves to parodies of tits and ass just in order to have a music career.

But you know, it’s actually OK to not be cool with porn culture or to think it’s super for women. You are grown ups, and grown up women don’t have to pretend to like porn just to look popular and cool.

alicesfavouritepen · 04/02/2022 17:48

Some staggering assumptions there @foxgoosefinch.

FabriqueBelgique · 04/02/2022 17:49

I personally get sexual empowerment and confidence from listening to female rap. It’s all about talking yourself up, knowing your worth, going for what you want and making sure you get it - in life and in the bedroom.

It’s poetry, comedy, amazing beats.. there’s creative artists behind the scenes making crazy sets, effects, fashion..

I bloody love it! Sorry if I’m womaning wrong.

You’re cool with porn culture then?
alicesfavouritepen · 04/02/2022 17:51

I'm not 'cool' with porn no.

alicesfavouritepen · 04/02/2022 17:51

Am I okay with these music videos including Madonna's etc from back in the day? Yes.

That’s great for you, my 9 y o came home from school today saying that the boys in her class keep touching the girls’ bottoms and pretending to grab their nipples because they think it’s funny and okay to do so. I don’t remember any boys doing that at my primary school. Guess it’s so empowering that WAP culture! Hmm Tits and add all round, nothing to see here!
foxgoosefinch · 04/02/2022 17:58

*ass

LuckyAmy1986 · 04/02/2022 18:02

@foxgoosefinch why is that my problem? I’m a grown woman who can listen to what I want.
