"lags" meaning prisoners, often used as "fellow lags".
I was just coming to say this! Corrupt prison officers are always 'screws' or 'guards' and they look on as lags romp with female staff....

'Sources' - as in 'sources close to the couple say...'

When actually nobody will say anything, so the journalist made it up, but they can't say that so they say 'sources' instead.
