I am not talking about conspiracies here that can't be proven with a bit of digging but more false stuff that seems to stick in the minds of the general population as truths.

  1. All/majority of lotto winners go broke after 5 years. I have seen this touted out a lot yet there is no known source of it as no such research exists. There is the handful of bad stories that are circulated but this is only a minority out of 1000s of big winners worldwide. Infact, I recall the tabloids doing a feature with winners to celebrate Camelot's 20th anniversary or so and many winners had said their lives were better.
  1. Marriage means all assets are split 50/50. Another huge misconception.
  1. Prenups will protect 1 in divorce- again I think 2 and 3 come from people watching tv shows and movies that use this as factual when it's not.
  1. Elvis sings 'Lonely this Christmas.'
  1. The capital of Brazil is Rio.

That you have to sell something at the price on the shelf, no you don't, you can withdraw the items from sale.

Skilovingmama · 02/02/2022 21:27

@Footnote

That urine is sterile That “eskimos” have 40+ words for snow Some people seem to believe that Hitler was German That nuclear reactors create more radioactive waste than coal fired power plants That Spanish people lisp in imitation of a past king That someone called their child La-a That humans are descended from monkeys
Hitler was born in Austria-Hungary but later became a German citizen so people who say that he was German are not incorrect.
SnackSizeRaisin · 02/02/2022 21:27

It's better for the environment to replace an old car with a more efficient newer one

Tilltheend99 · 02/02/2022 21:27

@Anne8850

That you can't drive until 6 weeks after a c-section
The NHS website recommends some activities such as driving or doing exercise shouldn’t be done for six weeks but that you can do those things if you feel up to it. So no one’s going to stop you and arrest you but it is a recommendation.
ThreeRingCircus · 02/02/2022 21:27

That non-bio washing powder is better for sensitive skin. Incorrect and it's not the enzymes in biological detergent that cause skin irritation it's the perfumes and there are often more chemicals in non-bio.

I believed this for years and years and always suffered with eczema until my GP set me straight and I switched to bio, it really improved my skin. Of course people are different so it's trial and error.

The6thSanta · 02/02/2022 21:27

I’ve explained it really badly! There’s no way to stop an asystole heart (miracles do happen!). A defibrillator will only reset a heartbeat (doctors ‘stop’ your heart for certain surgeries and would use a defibrillator to restart, but it’s not ‘dead’ per se). An AED is an Automated External Defibrillator, it’s not used for that kind of surgical purpose.
I think I explained that a bit better!

Mydogmylife · 02/02/2022 21:28

@Leftbutcameback

That it's illegal to drive barefoot / in flipflops
Not illegal per se, but as it's against the Highway Code you can be charged with driving without due care and attention, and can be fined £100 and 3 penalty points on your licence
PotatoGoblins · 02/02/2022 21:29

@Leftbutcameback generally speaking they do…but things like teeth, hair, hard bits of bone like shoulder blades and kneecaps etc are usually too much effort for the average pig. Also because they tend to dig around in their food, a lot of the “mushier” parts of bodies like brain matter just end up churned into the dirt which is then pretty easy to find and determine that’s it’s human if the area were to be searched.
You could starve a pig for a few weeks, and it probably still would think kneecaps and shoulder blades are too much like hard work.

DrSbaitso · 02/02/2022 21:29

@Luckyelephant1

That Sydney is the capital of Australia (it's Canberra).

That it's 'bare with me' (it's 'bear with me')

Well, that second one depends on who you're with.
The6thSanta · 02/02/2022 21:30

Hitler was German (was born Austrian, but became a German citizen). His grandmother wasn’t Jewish though!!

3scape · 02/02/2022 21:30

@ivykaty44. It's not NEAR Coventry it is IN Coventry (it is CV4, properties falling under Coventry City Council are CV1 to CV6).

Warwickshire is hardly miles away from the West Midlands though.

WhoppingBigBackside · 02/02/2022 21:30

@EdithWeston

That Marilyn Monroe was a size 16, or a size between 12-16

(Her measurements were recorded post mortem as bust 35, waist 22, hips 35, and her film costumes are usually displatpyed on a modern size 2 mannequin)

It was a uk size 16 back in Marilyn's day.

This is very detailed and precise! So what did you do with the body in the end

PotatoGoblins · 02/02/2022 21:33

@stuntbubbles Grin I feel it would be irresponsible of me to actually give out information on how to dispose of a body in a more efficient manner Blush (Althougb I do have a pretty watertight idea of how I would do it if I ever found myself in that position!)

FatOaf · 02/02/2022 21:34

Re your no 4, @shortroundd, I've just popped over to youtube to check and watched elvis singing it

If you mean this:

or this:

Then, no: it's Mud (as it says in the copyright information under the videos). The fact that someone posting on Youtube says it's Elvis Presley doesn't make it so.

Listen to the official video of Mud:

This is the recording on those other videos that are claimed to be Elvis Presley.

The6thSanta · 02/02/2022 21:34

That men have better spatial awareness than women - it’s not true, women have just as good cognitive function than men in this area. However, there is research which shows the language used to explain spatial tasks to women is different to that of men and that women are expected to do worse. This is what causes the differences in studies.

Fridafever · 02/02/2022 21:35

A 22” waist was a size 16? I find that hard to believe, how big was a size 8?

Exactly how do you know this?😱😱😱😱😱

Leftbutcameback · 02/02/2022 21:35

@mydogmylife flip flops are not mentioned in the highway code. Instead it says f
"Footwear and clothing which does not prevent you using the controls in the correct manner" which is a matter of fact and interpretation and could equally apply to high heels, platform shoes, snow boots etc

cpox · 02/02/2022 21:35

Acne is caused by diet.
Dandruff is caused by poor hygiene.
If you have oily skin, you can ‘trick’ your skin into producing less oil by moisturising more.
Bio oil cures stretch marks.

As someone with inflammatory skin diseases I get pretty frustrated with the unsolicited advice I regularly receive which is not even factually correct

SpaghettiArmsMurderer · 02/02/2022 21:35

That almond milk is worse for the environment than cow’s milk

OopsadayZ · 02/02/2022 21:36

That there is such a thing as common law wife or husband and this gives you rights.
...In England. This exists in other nations. You mean England right?
Leftbutcameback · 02/02/2022 21:37

@PotatoGoblins I wish I hadn't asked now - you've put me right off my baileys!

RagzRebooted · 02/02/2022 21:38

@MrPoppysParka

That blood is blue until it is exposed to the air.
Someone told my kids this in primary school. He wasn't a teacher, he was coming in to do some PE stuff, but still. They would not be dissuaded for years. They only believe me now because I'm a nurse and I've watched procedures that show the blood on the inside with a camera and it is definitely red.
