I am not talking about conspiracies here that can't be proven with a bit of digging but more false stuff that seems to stick in the minds of the general population as truths.

  1. All/majority of lotto winners go broke after 5 years. I have seen this touted out a lot yet there is no known source of it as no such research exists. There is the handful of bad stories that are circulated but this is only a minority out of 1000s of big winners worldwide. Infact, I recall the tabloids doing a feature with winners to celebrate Camelot's 20th anniversary or so and many winners had said their lives were better.
  1. Marriage means all assets are split 50/50. Another huge misconception.
  1. Prenups will protect 1 in divorce- again I think 2 and 3 come from people watching tv shows and movies that use this as factual when it's not.
  1. Elvis sings 'Lonely this Christmas.'
  1. The capital of Brazil is Rio.

We still get mail for the previous owners who left here in 2011, I open it then redirect it in a ripped envelope patched up to make sure they know their post is getting opened.

To be fair Brazil's capital was Rio de Janeiro until 1960.

Napoleon's family where Tuscan nobles who emigrated to Corsica, when Napoleon was born in Corsica which had been annexed by France. He was somewhere between 5'2 and 5'6 so not particularly tall, but average male height at the time if 5'6 (his elite soldiers where known for their height, so by comparison he would have seemed short!).

That you need to reserve your Tesco online shop with a bottle of champagne. The £40 limit doesn’t matter until the cut off point as you only get charged morning if delivery.

Leftbutcameback · 02/02/2022 21:17

So just to confirm, Napoleon was Italian?

@Leftbutcameback

I always think the US has 52 states! Is it actually 50?
yes only 50

That Hitler was German

Lemonandadropofhoney · 02/02/2022 21:20

@The6thSanta Thanks for the clarification. I did not realise there was a difference. I'm trained on the AED with basic first aid and was told it couldn't restart a heart that has stopped. Everyday is a school day.

But lots of people seem to believe that pigs are a great way to dispose of a body. They really aren’t Hmm

The6thSanta · 02/02/2022 21:22

Sort of, he was born in Corsica, but it had been bought by the French 16 months earlier. He learned French from age 10. Corsicans didn’t like French rule (unsurprisingly) and didn’t see themselves as French

Leftbutcameback · 02/02/2022 21:23

That you can gain a right over land really easily (prescriptive easement are very hard to prove, as is adverse possession more recently).

Jennifer2r · 02/02/2022 21:23

That there really exists a safety net in society and if you're homeless or suffering from DV or have a child with disabilities you just have to make enough of a fuss to your GP or social worker and you'll get the right support and housing and respite care.

Leftbutcameback · 02/02/2022 21:24

@Redannie118

I think i worded my last post badly. What I meant was if you ask most people the sex of a worker bee many would say male. They are in fact female. Drones are male and a tiny percent of the hive. They are stingless and only exist to fertilise the Queen. They do no work and do not leave the hive on a day to day basis. I hope that makes more sense :)
I think you're taking about my husband in the last part Grin
SnackSizeRaisin · 02/02/2022 21:26

If you work part time it's better to work Mondays because you get more time off than a part timer who doesn't work Mondays
