I am not talking about conspiracies here that can't be proven with a bit of digging but more false stuff that seems to stick in the minds of the general population as truths.

  1. All/majority of lotto winners go broke after 5 years. I have seen this touted out a lot yet there is no known source of it as no such research exists. There is the handful of bad stories that are circulated but this is only a minority out of 1000s of big winners worldwide. Infact, I recall the tabloids doing a feature with winners to celebrate Camelot's 20th anniversary or so and many winners had said their lives were better.
  1. Marriage means all assets are split 50/50. Another huge misconception.
  1. Prenups will protect 1 in divorce- again I think 2 and 3 come from people watching tv shows and movies that use this as factual when it's not.
  1. Elvis sings 'Lonely this Christmas.'
  1. The capital of Brazil is Rio.

That it's easy to get disability benefits/support.

@AutomaticMoon
"I don’t know if it’s about more control but pulling dogs can become injured and ill due to the constant pressure on oesophagus from collars. That’s why a wider collar should be used, or harness with bungee leash/shock absorption leash, or Martingale type collar, that tighten when the dog pulls and loosen when they’re at heel."
You arew right about the pulling injuries. but martingal collars are designed for houndy type dogs whose neck and head with are almost the same. They are designed to help to stop the dog being able to take its head out of its collar and escape and should be adjusted precisely to the size of the neck when closed. A martingale should NEVER be used to stop a dog pulling on the lead, neither should any other type of collar which tightens when its pulled on

That you cannot drink alcohol (or need to pump & dump) or take medication when you're breastfeeding you most definitely cannot drink alcohol while breastfeeding. you can only take medication which is declared to be safe

That babies feed 4 hourly mine fed 3 hourly as a newborn

godmum56 · 03/02/2022 18:59

not neck and head with, neck and head width

AutomaticMoon · 03/02/2022 18:59

@flannelbritches

That cows produce milk because they are cows.

Cows only produce milk because they have had a baby. That baby is then taken away from them, the breast milk is then pumped from them and served to humans.

If you have cows milk, you are having the breast milk that was intended for a baby calf, but that calf was taken away.

You should know that feral cats in the Galapagos steal milk from elephant seals, humans are not exclusive in our use of milk of another species. And human women have breastfed animals too, goats, lambs, etc.
MarvellousMonsters · 03/02/2022 19:00

"a decent harness will give you kinder control of most dogs."

No it won't. Harnesses were designed to allow huskies to pull sleds efficiently, proper training and a collar & lead give actual control.

I've been involved in infant feeding for roughly 20 years, alcohol doesn't pass into Breastmilk in significant quantity, for your Breastmilk to be 'alcoholic' you'd need to be blackout drunk. If you're safe to hold your baby, you're safe to feed your baby.

Virtually all medications are safe when breastfeeding, with the exception of a few things like chemo, some psychiatric meds, and radioisotopes.

MarvellousMonsters · 03/02/2022 19:08

AutomaticMoon, a dog that's pulling on the lead needs training not a harness. Dogs shouldn't walk ahead on a taut lead, but at heel on a loose lead. A harness won't fix that, training (with a slip lead or martingale collar) is the only way to prevent that kind of injury.

That rape victims can be questioned about what they were wearing, or their sexual history (very limited circumstances, but so many people think it’s routine in rape trials).
Think this comes from tv, especially programmes law and order- svu. Especially when the prosecution go diving through sexual history to make sure the defence can't use it against them.

The roots of marriage are NOTHING to do with romance, that's a very recent development in human history relatively speaking. It's a legal contract that was intended to control where money went! Also to control women!

I do realise that the roots of marriage are NOTHING to do with romance, but I thought that society had evolved somewhat since those times. However, apparently not in some parts of the world.

  1. Prenups will protect 1 in divorce- again I think 2 and 3 come from people watching tv shows and movies that use this as factual when it's not.

Prenups are valid in the UK and usually upheld unless discriminatory towards children, the person who signed prenup was mentally ill or that person did not understand implications although the latter is more difficult to prove. There are few other little bits involved too. However, yes prenup it's not automatically binding as it must meet certain criteria but prenup certainly protect you during divorce and there are precedents set in the case law

actually prenups are taken into consideration and can depend on the judge. I never said they wouldn't help one-they can, I meant that they aren't bullet proof by any means and it can depend on many fac.ors,

I think you're confusing 'cannot' and 'might not choose to if possible'.
shortroundd · 03/02/2022 19:34

That children can be spoiled by giving them to much sympathy when they are upset

this can be spoiling though as often kids can be 'upset' by trivial things or things they detect as 'unfair' but are or when they don't get their own way.

It is illegal in Germany. So instead, people write "coded" comments so you can read between the lines - think along the lines of "he always tried his best". Worse than an openly bad reference as it's all just hints, no need to prove it.

yes perhaps and I know bad references can leave one open to legal action but the universal doctrine that they are illegal is complete bollox. My friend also got a very daming 1. We work in the same industry but 2 different bosses and both times the references were bullshit but it was because we stood up to the boss.
