I am not talking about conspiracies here that can't be proven with a bit of digging but more false stuff that seems to stick in the minds of the general population as truths.

 1. All/majority of lotto winners go broke after 5 years. I have seen this touted out a lot yet there is no known source of it as no such research exists. There is the handful of bad stories that are circulated but this is only a minority out of 1000s of big winners worldwide. Infact, I recall the tabloids doing a feature with winners to celebrate Camelot's 20th anniversary or so and many winners had said their lives were better.
 1. Marriage means all assets are split 50/50. Another huge misconception.
 1. Prenups will protect 1 in divorce- again I think 2 and 3 come from people watching tv shows and movies that use this as factual when it's not.
 1. Elvis sings 'Lonely this Christmas.'
 1. The capital of Brazil is Rio.

Prenups are valid in the UK and usually upheld unless discriminatory towards children, the person who signed prenup was mentally ill or that person did not understand implications although the latter is more difficult to prove. There are few other little bits involved too. However, yes prenup it's not automatically binding as it must meet certain criteria but prenup certainly protect you during divorce and there are precedents set in the case law.

@OneTC

While we're on that subject, it's part of your T&C's with the provider that as a merchant that you can't refuse card transactions based on value or add a charge
I worked for one of the big supermarkets back in early 00s and we had to do lottery payments separately and cash only, I can't remember what year it changed though

That rape victims can be questioned about what they were wearing, or their sexual history (very limited circumstances, but so many people think it’s routine in rape trials).
A rape victim would be asked to describe what they were wearing as part of their video interview.

@mumof2exhausted yes the poster knows that!! The thread is 'things people believe that are NOT true. Sigh...

"Did no-one ever learn about the 13 stripes and the 50 stars on the US flag? I knew this by the time I was about eight, and I'm certainly not American."

I didn't do America as a subject in school. What knowledge I have comes from TV and the media.

That cows produce milk because they are cows.

Cows only produce milk because they have had a baby. That baby is then taken away from them, the breast milk is then pumped from them and served to humans.

If you have cows milk, you are having the breast milk that was intended for a baby calf, but that calf was taken away.
@SuperSocks because psychiatrist and psychologists look at the whole person, not just the traits. They identify the traits, the impact the traits have on you and your life, your social skills etc. They apply that to the criteria required to take you across the threshold from NT to autistic, combine that with professional judgement plus discussion with another colleague - I've only been through my children being diagnosed but in both their cases, it was more than one mental health professional each time to reach a conclusion.

Obviously this is all the 'I've no idea but I assume it's along those lines' viewpoint of an unqualified health professional.

It's a bit like saying, everyone who feels sick every day, everyone who has put on a bit of weight - must be a bit pregnant. It's literally as ridiculous as that. A few symptoms do not make a diagnosis. A few traits do not make you autistic. It's insulting to autistic people to suggest everyone is 'on the spectrum' because that implies that autistic people are actually neurotypical. Which they aren't! It also implies all neurotypical people are autistic, which they aren't. It's really a ludicrous statement if you think about it.

Unfortunately autism impacts people in such different ways and to different extents, it has to be described as a spectrum. From that people have jumped to the erroneous conclusion that the spectrum goes in a straight line from 'completely normal/neurotypical to autistic' or from mildly autistic, to extremely autistic. It doesn't, it goes from autistic - with these particular dominant traits to autistic with different dominant autistic traits. And it's not really a line. A circle better describes it (I've attached a couple of pictures that I think explain it quite well) .

I hope that long waffly explanation helps!
I love your answer. My daughter has autism and also a severe learning disability. People assume lots of things about autism. I often get the 'but aren't we all a bit autistic'. My daughter is severely impacted by her autism. Her life is very restricted due to it, others with autism are often not impacted anywhere near as much. Some love their autism, some don't. She doesn't speak, communicate and has a poor quality of life, hits out at others, self harms etc - there is massive intervention and her needs are complex, there is a team around her. Lots of meds (cue people to say don't use meds) a large team due to major behaviours (cue people to say try xyz therapy or homeopathy (shit) etc... Boy do I get fed of with 'well meaning' but incorrect individuals who give me their views on autism/spectrum/its a great thing (for some maybe) etc etc I wish people would understand everyone is different. Moan/rant etc over.

Worker bees in a hive are all female. Drones are male and do not leave the hive and are stingless.

I thought this was the case and Wikipedia confirms that worker bees are female.
I came on to say this, wasn't Wikipedia but Manchester and District Beekeepers Society;
The worker bees are female, but they do not breed. The queen bee is female and creates all the babies for the hive. The drone bees are male and do not have a sting

But the propaganda works. So many younger people proudly call themselves communists. I was born in such a place and it’s very sad. We will end up with Social Credit Score like the CCP in China. I don’t know if anyone saw the disturbing video of Klaus Schwab praising the CCP and Xinping?

Someone tried to break into my house and shouted that they were going to kill me through the letterbox.

When the police came they said they don't have the power to arrest people without evidence. I'm pretty sure it's that they don't have the power to charge, but should still arrest?

MarvellousMonsters · 03/02/2022 18:47

That you cannot drink alcohol (or need to pump & dump) or take medication when you're breastfeeding.

That babies feed 4 hourly.

Harnesses give you more control of a dog.

That we need complex skin care routines and make up.

AutomaticMoon · 03/02/2022 18:47

That flies only lay eggs. I’ve seen with my own eyes a fly give live birth. I found videos of it too but officially I don’t think it’s known.

I don’t know if it’s about more control but pulling dogs can become injured and ill due to the constant pressure on oesophagus from collars. That’s why a wider collar should be used, or harness with bungee leash/shock absorption leash, or Martingale type collar, that tighten when the dog pulls and loosen when they’re at heel.

That homeless people get more benefits if they have a dog.
I still thought this. 😳

I’m sorry, that’s frightening. My landlord with 2 other men assaulted me trying to force his way in for an electric test (without notice) and I filmed it, the electrician grabbed my breast for absolutely no reason, I already have cPTSD and the police woman who came eventually said it’s his right to come in whenever he wants, cause he’s got a key. That’s completely illegal.

a decent harness will give you kinder control of most dogs.

What is the point of marriage in countries where common law partnerships have the same legal status? What is wrong with it being an active choice?

Because as much as a woman might want to get married, her partner doesn’t or won’t. Babies can happen accidentally. There are lots and lots of reasons it’s not so simple as “be smart enough to get married before you become a parent/caregiver”.

Marriage is still very popular in Australia and New Zealand, because a solid % of the population like the idea of making a public commitment in front of friends, family, relevant God etc.

Elements of communism/socialism have worked in history. Principles of greater equality and egality are arguably necessary as part of a civilised society, but wise, humane, competent and moral leadership is required to make it work.

It has gone wrong when leaders have become corrupt/insane/incompetent/autocratic/murderers.

Yes but they are incredibly propagandised and manipulated, they have a social credit score system and constant surveillance. They were forced to have abortions and the government can and does whatever they please. It’s not a good example of communism ‘working’, just an example of totalitarianism.
