I am not talking about conspiracies here that can't be proven with a bit of digging but more false stuff that seems to stick in the minds of the general population as truths.

 1. All/majority of lotto winners go broke after 5 years. I have seen this touted out a lot yet there is no known source of it as no such research exists. There is the handful of bad stories that are circulated but this is only a minority out of 1000s of big winners worldwide. Infact, I recall the tabloids doing a feature with winners to celebrate Camelot's 20th anniversary or so and many winners had said their lives were better.
 1. Marriage means all assets are split 50/50. Another huge misconception.
 1. Prenups will protect 1 in divorce- again I think 2 and 3 come from people watching tv shows and movies that use this as factual when it's not.
 1. Elvis sings 'Lonely this Christmas.'
 1. The capital of Brazil is Rio.

@Livelovebehappy

Ring around a Rosie is not about the plague. Was told it was years ago, and only found out recently that it isn’t.
It’s a ring a ring
Mydogmylife · 02/02/2022 21:39
@mydogmylife flip flops are not mentioned in the highway code. Instead it says f
"Footwear and clothing which does not prevent you using the controls in the correct manner" which is a matter of fact and interpretation and could equally apply to high heels, platform shoes, snow boots etc
Indeed, I agree, but it does place the wearing of flipflops on potentially rocky ground re penalties etc which was what I meant - as in don't assume you'll definitely get off scot free.

DietrichandDiMaggio · 02/02/2022 21:40

@tootiredtospeak

That Daddy Long legs have a deadly poison but it's just the fact they cannot bite that saves us.
Do masses of people believe this - I've never heard of it.
Wheresthecueballgoing · 02/02/2022 21:40

That it's against the law to drive with your car interior light on

DrSbaitso · 02/02/2022 21:41

@OnlyTheTitosaurusOfTheIceberg

That it’s possible to change sex.
Nobody really believes this one. If they did, they could make am argument for it that didn't involve name calling and death threats, and there would be some degree of error in which sex was subjected to them.

They know full well it's not true.

Florenz · 02/02/2022 21:41

That tuna fish are small.

OhWhyNot · 02/02/2022 21:41

That Blackheath was a mass grave in the time of the plague

RagzRebooted · 02/02/2022 21:42

@SnackSizeRaisin

If you work part time it's better to work Mondays because you get more time off than a part timer who doesn't work Mondays
This was actually true in my workplace until we got better management. I had mentioned it a few times (I work Mondays and my colleague doesn't) but at the time no one but me seemed to be able to understand the maths and just accepted it. My colleague now has their correct holiday entitlement.
fleurpots · 02/02/2022 21:42

That the pandemic has been going on for three years. I see all over 'the last three years...' and for some irrational reason it drives me batty. It's been TWO YEARS.

AutomaticMoon · 02/02/2022 21:44

That we only use 10% of our brains Hmm

DrSbaitso · 02/02/2022 21:44

Itwas a uk size 16 back in Marilyn's day.

Was it?

Leftbutcameback · 02/02/2022 21:45

And reminded by another thread - that boundary (fence) ownership is always shown on deeds.

AutomaticMoon · 02/02/2022 21:45

@fleurpots Well technically it did start in 2019...

itsgettingweird · 02/02/2022 21:45

@Rogue1001MNer

That the tories are capable of running a country
🤣🤣🤣
DdraigGoch · 02/02/2022 21:46

@SnackSizeRaisin

It's better for the environment to replace an old car with a more efficient newer one
It depends on how much you use it - if you use it to make a monthly trip to the shops then keep the old one. If on the other hand you are doing hundreds of miles a day then replace it.

In any case, replacing the car with a bicycle is better for the environment full stop.

Leftbutcameback · 02/02/2022 21:46

If a 22 inch waist was a size 16 in MM day, what size waist would a size 10 be? 16 inches?

bedheadedzombie · 02/02/2022 21:47

That type 1 diabetics can't eat certain foods. They can eat anything if they dose their insiulin correctly. They might choose not to because food with a high carb count can be a bit more tricky to guesstimate. It's easier to get it wrong without scales and a precise food label.

HunterHearstHelmsley · 02/02/2022 21:47

@Leftbutcameback

I always think the US has 52 states! Is it actually 50?
The theory is a lot of people think there are 50 because their minds go to a pack of cards- which has 52.

I think its a Mandela effect example as most people who think this are sure they were taught it at school.

PotatoGoblins · 02/02/2022 21:47

@Warblerinwinter I’m studying forensic science and have a degree in forensic psychology. It’s involved a hell of a lot of reading about some very grisly cases Confused including a pretty big chunk about Robert Pickton - the Canadian serial killer who chose his own pig farm as his disposal method! Didn’t work out well for him

SpaghettiArmsMurderer · 02/02/2022 21:48

@Nandocushion

That 'organic' means 'healthier'.

Common-law spouses ARE a legal thing in a lot of places actually. They just aren't in England I think? Not sure about Scotland.

They are not legally recognised in any part of the U.K. and they are not a legal thing in ‘lots of places.’ en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Common-law_marriage
The6thSanta · 02/02/2022 21:48

That ginger works for morning sickness. In fact that anything works for morning sickness, that it’s even in the morning and that it stops after 12 weeks.
I was lied to lots

godmum56 · 02/02/2022 21:48

@Leftbutcameback

And reminded by another thread - that boundary (fence) ownership is always shown on deeds.
oh god aye....and all the other fence ownership stupidities
SnackSizeRaisin · 02/02/2022 21:49

A 22” waist was a size 16? I find that hard to believe, how big was a size 8?

It presumably was her bust that made her a size 14 to 16. A 22 inch waist was always tiny! A size 8 waist was about 23 inch back then .

fleurpots · 02/02/2022 21:49
@fleurpots Well technically it did start in 2019...
It existing in three separate years doesn't mean it's been going on for three years. In the same way that people who lived in the nineteenth, twentieth and twenty-first century were not three hundred years old.

ThePlumVan · 02/02/2022 21:49

@CounsellorTroi what happened then ?
I remember this as if it was yesterday.
