Boris - new low

Obviously he's running scared from his own side as well and Labour and the excellent contribution from Ian Blackford - no doubt Dennis Skinner would have done the same if still an MP.

However, there was no need for Johnson to stoop to the level of more lies - this time trying smear Kier Starmer with untrue allegations about Jimmy Savile.

@Alexandra2001
Looks like your knowledge of geography is of the same standard as your understanding of politics. Russia is the most populous country in Europe. Do you ever think to check your 'facts' before posting?

@WendyTreetops this thread has been entirely a fact free zone for those who have tried to defend Johnson's comments.

Whether or not Russia is a European country is something we could spend ages debating.
I fail to see why you need to be rude to other posters.

Alexandra2001 · 02/02/2022 21:34

@WendyTreetops

Russia is a transcontinental country.

All the condescension in the world doesn't change that.

mumwon · 02/02/2022 21:35

Russia is Europe up to the Urals, Asia beyond (according to my old Geography lessons)

WendyTreetops · 02/02/2022 21:37

@jgw1
You falsely stated that UK had the highest covid toll in Europe and then tried to move the goalposts when I politely gave you the correct figures. Maybe you have the moral high ground in your own mind. I have much more respect for people who care about the truth.

I haven't tried to move the goalposts anywhere.
I am quite happy to accept that there is an argument to be made that Russia is a European country and therefore the UK has the 2nd highest death toll in Europe.
Other people would argue that Russia is not a European country and so the UK has the highest death toll in Europe.

Either way the Uk government's response to covid has been appalling,.

Alexandra2001 · 02/02/2022 21:40

Back to the OP, i thought one of BJ's lowest points was the "Pile the bodies high" comment .. followed by him publicly going for herd immunity.

No wonder we have the highest absolute death toll in Europe and an unbelievable 500 plus deaths today

mumwon · 02/02/2022 21:41

Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliiffe a prime example of ineptitude
or favouring one of his married bits on the side that American woman when he was mayor (& claiming that it didn't happen)
I could go on

As bad as the Saville comments are, and perhaps they do represent a new low, the letterbox ones are well up (down?) there as well.
jgw1 · 02/02/2022 21:44

Russia shares a border with China and you think its in Europe? Its a transcontinental country i.e spans more than one continent.... WM includes it because 77% of its pop. live in the European bit but that does not make it "european"

At the risk of continuing a pointless discussion, Russia also shares sea borders with the USA and Japan, both of which as any geography student knows are close to Europe.

Alexandra2001 · 02/02/2022 21:52

@jgw1 Yes there are so many to chose from.

I was in Sweden when Bojo became ForSec my Swedish friends thought this was a practical joke, they considered him to be a comedian, not a serious player.. they were wrong, he is deadly serious about getting and keeping power, no matter who or what gets in his way.

WendyTreetops · 02/02/2022 21:54

@jgw1
At the risk of continuing a pointless discussion, if you'd had the intellectual honesty to admit your mistake when it was politely pointed out to you you wouldn't need to try to save face now. Your comments are a fact free zone though aren't they Grin.

Peregrina · 02/02/2022 22:02

I am sure that this is what Raab and Truss think, and that France and Germany are on the other side of the globe.

I am going to do an impression of one of Boris' apologies, I hope you enjoy it.

I am sorry if you found my post about the UK death toll not to your liking. There are differences of opinions on whether Russia is a European country. The price of fish is high tonight isn't it.

Unless you have evidence to the contrary I have to suggest you are wrong. There is no evidence that Raab and Truss think.

TBF to @WendyTreetops The UK Govt did think they could join the Trans Pacific partnership and in a world of "alternative facts" China is the eastern border of Europe.... & explains why Putin is so worried... China to join the EU ? Japan to join NATO?

To be fair, there are almost as many troops from NATO countries in Japan as there are service personnel in the RAF and Royal Navy combined.
Blossomtoes · 03/02/2022 00:43

Looks like Brandon Lewis has been reading this thread, he just doubled down on the Starmer slur on Peston - when Raab said the opposite. They can’t even sort their lines to take straight.

DePfeffoff · 03/02/2022 00:57

*We didn't have any restrictions over Xmas despite Scotland and Wales panicking. Plan b wasn't really restrictions was it, many people still wore masks and wfh wasn't a hardship for many. He has made many right decisions.````````````8

And we now have an average of 1850 covid deaths a week. Are you sure about those decisions?

DePfeffoff · 03/02/2022 01:06

I've been reading about Chamberlain. Although his post war reputation was low because of Munich, it seems to be accepted that his motivation was an absolute horror of the thought of war after experience of WW1, and he felt that his personal reputation didn't matter if he could either avert war completely or postpone it for long enough to improve our chances of winning.

Such a striking contrast to the current PM, who would never for one single moment contemplate putting his country before his personal interests.

@WindyState

There comes a point where you just have to accept that certain people are just fucking idiots and you are no longer surprised by what they do.

Boris passed that point about 20 years ago. He's an idiot, he does stupid things. Is the pope catholic?

This. Don't know why some still insist that he's smart. He might be able to recite facts from a book, doesn't make him smart. He's far from it.

I think you will find it enlightening.

What we do know for sure is that what Boris said in parliament on Monday about Jimmy Saville is a lie.

WendyTreetops · 03/02/2022 07:51

@jgw1
Again, you would come across much better if you admitted you were wrong and were 'inadvertently' misleading people about the UK's covid death toll.

I know you're not keen on facts, but Starmer was DPP and thus head of the CPS when it decided not to prosecute Savile. There are separate questions of whether that decision was wrong and whether Starmer was personally involved in that decision (I suspect the answer is 'no' to both those questions). But it's entirely accepted for a senior public servant to be criticised for the actions of the organisations which they lead (or, in this case, led). So, Johnson might have behaved reprehensibly in his comment about Starmer, but he didn't lie. Let me add a point in parallel: saying a country's covid death toll is bad compared to others without allowing for different population sizes isn't lying, but it is deceitful.

countrygirl99 · 03/02/2022 07:57

I think the key point is that when Starmer discovered things had gone wrong with Saville he set about improving the situation going forward and prosecutions for child abuse rose. Compare and contrast to Johnson who is flapping around, lying and trying to distract.
