White Rabbits

Mooey89 · 01/02/2022 08:34

Help settle a very important debate with scientific data of an AIBU poll.

My colleague (hull) said that on the 1st month you say ‘white rabbit’ x 3 for good luck.
The rest of us (southern) had never heard it before.
So, have you heard it/do you say it, and if so, where in the country are you?

YANBU - Yes I say it, I’m northern
YABU - I say it and I’m southern

Thanks 😂

Always say it .....I’m NW

Daenerys77 · 01/02/2022 12:05

I grew up in Essex and was brought up to say 'rabbits', no mention of the colour, but I gave up the practice when it consistently failed to deliver good lick.

Daenerys77 · 01/02/2022 12:06

good luck not lick!

Fartooparanoid · 01/02/2022 12:06

Said only once. Said when there is an R in the month.

Minikievs · 01/02/2022 12:19

@LydiaFTM

Midlands and I say it, only once though not 3 times!
Same!
Moonflower12 · 01/02/2022 12:44

Our family is from the South West/ Wales and we say 'pinch, punch , first day of the month! No return'. I vaguely remember my grandmother doing the White Rabbits thing.

Giggorata · 01/02/2022 12:54

My Grandma, who was born during Victorian times (!) and was from Mitcham in Surrey when it was still rural, told me that you say “white rabbits” the night before the 1st of the month, and in the morning you say “hares, hares, hares”

caulkheaded · 01/02/2022 12:55

I asked some friends about this recently. I’m southern and say it but friends from the south west and London didn’t.

Squidgames4U · 01/02/2022 12:57

Only on 1st April.

IsadoraQuagmire · 01/02/2022 18:34

@Giggorata

My Grandma, who was born during Victorian times (!) and was from Mitcham in Surrey when it was still rural, told me that you say “white rabbits” the night before the 1st of the month, and in the morning you say “hares, hares, hares”
I do it the other way around, White Rabbits as the first thing I say on the first (family Londoners for generations) and I say Hares last thing the night before. That isn't a family tradition though, I got it from a book when I was about 10 and have done it ever since!
iklboo · 01/02/2022 18:40

Northern here. Definitely rabbits. And 'pinch, punch, first of the month'

FranklyMyBeer · 01/02/2022 18:42

Don't know if anyone has said this, but White rabbits was only for 1sr March

Lindaloo08 · 01/02/2022 18:43

Irish and say white rabbits x 3 on 1st of month, has to be the first thing you say on the 1st for good luck

BobbieT1999 · 01/02/2022 18:45

Southerner here.

First day of the month, before midday, you say: "Pinch, punch, first day of the month. White rabbits, white rabbits, white rabbits."

Once you say it to someone they can't say it back to you! Grin

Watercoloursky · 01/02/2022 19:28

East Anglian here! Grew up saying White rabbits 3 times. Also pinch punch, first day of the month, and no returns! But the two weren't related, you didn't say rabbits to avoid the pinching. My mum still whatsapps me three rabbit emojis on the 1st each month Smile

GrandDuchessRomanov · 01/02/2022 19:31

White rabbits said once but only when there is an R in the month.

Northern.

Gridhopper · 01/02/2022 19:48

I’d completely forgotten about ‘white rabbit’ and ‘pinch punch, etc’ until reading this thread!! But - now I recall - the former has to be your first utterance on the 1st in order to bring good luck and the latter…I’m hazy about..maybe you only do it once to your mate who you walk to the school bus with first thing, and it definitely includes the ‘no returns’ caveat. I’m in Yorkshire. Determined to remember on March 1st.

Momicrone · 01/02/2022 19:53

Never heard of it

BigYellowHat · 01/02/2022 20:37

YABU. Southern.

Santiagopink · 01/02/2022 20:44

South. Ours is slightly different
"Pinch punch, first of the month, no returns, white rabbit." Only once but must be first thing to say to someone else and before midday. If you don't say no returns white rabbit you get " kick and a flick for being so quick" back to you

nonevernotever · 01/02/2022 21:15

I can't decide which vote covers me. I'm Scottish with English parents and was brought up saying White rabbits once on the first of any month with an R in it, but only if you remembered to say it before you said anything else.

MasterBeth · 01/02/2022 21:29

I’m in my 50s and it’s what my London nans said.

Silkierabbit · 01/02/2022 21:32

I was also taught it by my grandmother who was born in 1900 and from the Mid lands and she had done this all her life so people are now likely to be all over.

Persephoned · 01/02/2022 21:43

I’m midlands (so can’t answer your poll!) and say it three times!

Madcats · 01/02/2022 21:44

Pinch Punch is a competitive thing in our house (mid 50's with a teen).

I'd forgotten about "white rabbit", but I feel confident we used that in the 70's in Sussex.
