White Rabbits

Help settle a very important debate with scientific data of an AIBU poll.

My colleague (hull) said that on the 1st month you say ‘white rabbit’ x 3 for good luck.
The rest of us (southern) had never heard it before.
So, have you heard it/do you say it, and if so, where in the country are you?

YANBU - Yes I say it, I’m northern
YABU - I say it and I’m southern

Thanks 😂

Yes say it here grow up in the very South but dad from the north. Anyone know wheres it from

MeanderingGently · 01/02/2022 09:27

I'm from a midlands family, we say White Rabbits just once, when there is an r in the month....it has to be the first thing you say that day though.

GrandmasterGlitchsMoustache · 01/02/2022 09:28

White Rabbit has to be the very first thing you say on 1st February otherwise bad luck for the year (says my overly superstitious and old school DM). Midlands but also middle class.

Rest of the year it's "pinch punch first of the month" but no bad luck, just little punches and punches.

HopefulProcrastinator · 01/02/2022 09:29

Welsh - never heard of it. We always did pinch punch as kids though.

HopingForMyRainbowBaby · 01/02/2022 09:31

3 times. I'm in the East Riding

ErrolTheDragon · 01/02/2022 09:33

@mrsjoyfulprizeforraffiawork

Old Londoner here (in my 60s). We never said white rabbits. Just, "a pinch and a punch for the first of the month and NO RETURNS"
That's what we said, Northern family, though we were living in the south by the time I was in school. I think I heard 'white rabbits' very occasionally.
GaspingGekko · 01/02/2022 09:33

My parents from NE taught me it's rabbits, rabbits, rabbits said first thing on a month with an R in it for good luck.
My DH, from London, introduced me to pinch, punch.

MaizeAmaze · 01/02/2022 09:40

Midlands. Know it, don't do it
"Pinch and a punch for the first of the month" here.
With the reply being "Punch and a kick for being so quick"

SamMil · 01/02/2022 09:41

I've never heard of it (from the south east).

We did do "pinch punch, first day of the month" though.

Pbjontoast · 01/02/2022 09:43

I'm northern and have never said it. I'd never actually heard it before living down south with a friend from the IOW who used to say 'pinch, punch , first of the month.' Then white rabbits x3.

newtb · 01/02/2022 09:43

Yes, northern. If you forget you have to Say 'hares' last thing at night, too.

LumpyandBumps · 01/02/2022 09:43

Originally from Essex and we said ‘White rabbits’ accompanied by a little jump. Only once though.

Thirtytimesround · 01/02/2022 09:45

Never heardnof this. SE.

Changemaname1 · 01/02/2022 09:46

@WelcomeEverythingIsFine I actually remembered today for the first time in like a year 😁

Tulips21 · 01/02/2022 09:46

Never heard of that saying ( West wales)
We do ' Pinch , Punch , 1st of the month'

Purplemoon65 · 01/02/2022 09:49

Southern and grew up saying it. It has to be the first thing you say in the morning though and gives you good luck for the rest of the month. Just say it once.

OneTC · 01/02/2022 09:50

White rabbit, said once, after you've just pinched and punched someone, makes your immune from a pinch and punch back

It was traditional then to punch them and kick them in retaliation and say punch and kick for being such a dick

OneTC · 01/02/2022 09:50

And I'm from somewhere else but grew up in SE

PatterPaws · 01/02/2022 09:51

I learned White Rabbits as a child. But only for 1st March!

Winchestercollege · 01/02/2022 09:52

Just May.

Jellycatrabbit · 01/02/2022 09:52

Should be the first thing you say on the first of the month for a lucky month. North West. I usually manage it at some point in the morning, was about the third thing I said today.

Also "good morning Mr Magpie" neutralises one-for-sorrow.

Ghostlyfeet · 01/02/2022 09:54

"Pinch punch first of the month... white rabbits"
Just means they can't punch you back. I'm in Surrey.

merryhouse · 01/02/2022 09:57

I was born and bred in Leicestershire (several generations).

We used to say "Rabbits" - it had to be before you said anything else.

The pinch and the punch was a thing among older children/teens.

WelcomeEverythingIsFine · 01/02/2022 09:58

@Changemaname1 I’m so jealous! I only realised after singing the breakfast song to my dog 🤦‍♀️
