White Rabbits

Mooey89 · 01/02/2022 08:34

Help settle a very important debate with scientific data of an AIBU poll.

My colleague (hull) said that on the 1st month you say ‘white rabbit’ x 3 for good luck.
The rest of us (southern) had never heard it before.
So, have you heard it/do you say it, and if so, where in the country are you?

YANBU - Yes I say it, I’m northern
YABU - I say it and I’m southern

Thanks 😂

I'm southern and have always said white rabbits on the first day of a new month.

Only once though - never heard about having to say it 3 times

traintraveller · 01/02/2022 09:00

I've just said it but only once. Never heard of the punch pinch thing, I'm scottish

sashh · 01/02/2022 09:01

I've heard of it, but it has to be first thing and you are supposed to turn round as well.

TomPinch · 01/02/2022 09:01

You say: a pinch and a punch for the first of the month (and you actually pinch and punch the other person.

Then you say: white rabbits, once.

That gives you immunity from the reply, which is: a slap and a kick for being too quick.

TomPinch · 01/02/2022 09:02

(and I'm from London)

Trumpton · 01/02/2022 09:03

“White Rabbits”. to stop someone pinching and punching for the first of the month.
But if they got it in first then “ A punch and a kick for being so quick”

Forces brat so lived all over the place !

PissedOffNeighbour22 · 01/02/2022 09:03

I'm northern and my mum says this x3 every month. I don't know anyone else who says it though!
She also has a stupid rhyme that she has to say every time she sees a magpie. Again, no one else I know does this.

Trumpton · 01/02/2022 09:04

@TomPinch
Cross posts. Ah my dad was from London !

HamsterTrumpet · 01/02/2022 09:04

Did it as a child in the SE - I think at infant school it was a “thing”.

Had forgotten about it completely until I read this!

WhyYesYABU · 01/02/2022 09:06

From Buckinghamshire and have never heard this before at all. I have heard of pinch punch though, we did it as kids.

loislovesstewie · 01/02/2022 09:07

I do it, and I'm from the West Country.

MrsSkylerWhite · 01/02/2022 09:07

Pinch, punch, first of the month. Quite old though, probably not advisable now Grin
Never heard the white rabbit thing
(Born southern, honorary northerner now).

Progress2019 · 01/02/2022 09:10

We were always told it was rabbits, unless the 1st fell on a Sunday in which case it was white rabbits. I’m southern.

MsAgnesDiPesto · 01/02/2022 09:10

I’m in the south west, and for my family it’s always been pinch/punch - no bunnies for us. This thread is the first time I’ve heard of it!

loveinthe90s · 01/02/2022 09:12

Londoner here:

Pinch, punch, first day of the month
White rabbits x 3

LindaEllen · 01/02/2022 09:15

My mum always said it (Northern) so I do say it if happen to remember but it doesn't really mean anything, or bother me if I forget.

senua · 01/02/2022 09:15

YANBU - Yes I say it, I’m northern
YABU - I say it and I’m southern

YABU: where's the option for Midlanders?

Yes all of those - I’m in SE. Or, for immunity from retribution, we’d also say ‘Vainites’ whilst crossing our fingers.

Same here.

And I forgot today, doh 🙄

CPL593H · 01/02/2022 09:18

West Midlands background, 3x.

PattyPan · 01/02/2022 09:21

I’ve heard a southern friend say it. I think it’s a class thing rather than regional

mrsjoyfulprizeforraffiawork · 01/02/2022 09:22

Old Londoner here (in my 60s). We never said white rabbits. Just, "a pinch and a punch for the first of the month and NO RETURNS"

user1471443411 · 01/02/2022 09:24

I've never heard of it before (midlands).

Needdoughnuts · 01/02/2022 09:24

Southerner here. At school we said white rabbits three times while spinning round. No idea why

Oreoreo · 01/02/2022 09:25

I’m Scottish and we’ve said it here in my family, always 3 times. I’ve never known why, but I still do it Smile
