I devastated by my 26 yr old daughters tattoos

Yup. I hate them. Today she showed me her new ‘sleeve’. It’s big black bold and bloody awful. She already has numerous tattoos and they’re getting bigger each time. She seems addicted. I don’t like tattoos. I don’t have to like them. That’s my choice. I’ve cried over it/her in private ! I’ve read up about parents reactions to our kids tattoos. And we are supposed to be happy that they are expressing themselves. But I’m struggling with that. I was ok with a few, ok with all the piercings… but the sleeve is too far. In my opinion. Does anyone else feel like me or am I the bitch mother from hell?

No one is very unreasonable for the way they feel .
Personally I love tattoos and have many .
You need to try and get past this

HairyShins · 01/02/2022 07:55

As other's have said it's her body so her choice.

That doesn't mean you can't be upset over them (as long as you keep that to yourself!).

In 30 years she may regret it or she might still love it. Either way she is the one who has to live with the consequences.

SarahBellam · 01/02/2022 07:55

People who want tattoos can have them. People who dislike them are entitled to dislike them. But we can’t tell people what they can and can’t do with their own bodies.

Comedycook · 01/02/2022 07:55

I hate tattoos. I think they're vile. I hope my dc don't get any when they're older. They are my beautiful children, not a piece of scrap paper to be doodled on.

Lots of harsh replies on here OP. I don't like tattoos either. I must admit I sometimes see gorgeous looking people on tv (both male and female) and wonder why they covered their beautiful bodies with tattoos- but of course that's just my opinion and many other people think tattoos add beauty. Here's an example- David Beckham To me, he'd be much more attractive if he wasn't covered in black ink. But as I'm not Victoria, who cares what I think? He certainly wouldn't! I do understand it's different when it's your own child though, so you have my sympathy. Luckily my DD is only 8, so I don't have to worry about it yet. I'm hoping that by the time she's 18 they'll be out of fashion so she won't want to have one!

notanothertakeaway · 01/02/2022 07:57

I hate tattoos

And I think, like most fashions, it'll pass. And lots of people will regret having them

But, your DD is old enough to make her own mistakes, and I think you have to respect her decision

Sparklingbrook · 01/02/2022 07:58

I wouldn't be happy either. I suppose if they were small ones hidden by clothes I would feel better.
Like it or not tattoos can restrict life choices in terms of jobs etc, if my two DSs started getting large tattoos or sleeves I'd be disappointed.

Littlecaf · 01/02/2022 07:59

I don’t like them either OP, but I have to stand by the fact that we chose what to do with our bodies and that if the DC want to do that, then my relationship with them not what they chose to do is more important and I’d look past it.

All this talk of "perfect" skin.

longwayoff · 01/02/2022 07:59

I understand OP, my son now looks like a 5 year old's colouring book. Sigh. I'm a fan of not doing stuff to yourself that you can't undo but there it is, his choice, not mine, so I keep my opinion to myself.

@Tippexy

What has she gone through in her life, when she was younger? The tattoos and piercings are a way of expressing/rejecting/coming to terms with her feelings about whatever it was. Support her to talk about it?
What? Tattoos are not the result of trauma. They are a fashion.
ImInStealthMode · 01/02/2022 08:00

All those 'they look awful' shouters, you forgot to add 'in my opinion'.

Well done tattoos can look absolutely beautiful in my opinion, and I generally find someone more physically attractive with them than without.

OP you had a child to raise, not to own. She's free to do whatever she likes with her body as an adult woman.

To the PP who compared tattoos to having a baby irresponsibility or credit card debt, are you for real?!? GrinGrin

HairyShins · 01/02/2022 08:00

@malificent7 I don't think old people look awful with tattoos. I think as tattoos get older they can go that funny green colour or get less defined. As skin sags it can also distort the tattoo.

I really like the look of neck tattoos but when people get older and their skin drops, they possibly won't look as good as they do now.

malificent7 · 01/02/2022 08:01

Let's hope your sons all shack up with a tattoo model then!

MedusasBadHairDay · 01/02/2022 08:03

People who get angry/upset about what other people do to their bodies are really fucking odd Confused

riotlady · 01/02/2022 08:03

Some of the views on here about tattoos and jobs are very dated. I have a large tattoo on my forearm and work in the civil service, I’ve previously worked in the NHS and a school. So long as they aren’t offensive tattoos, it’s not a problem.

Momicrone · 01/02/2022 08:04

Am I allowed to upset if my kids got face tattoos?

iwanttobeonleave · 01/02/2022 08:04

I'd be devastated too. I absolutely hate them and I'd be terribly upset. I think my children's bodies (any bodies!) are amazing just as they are. I'm sorry this happened for you.

@Choclover27 my friends daughter is covered she is devastated esp now she has a child and is finding it hard to not be judged by her tattoos. I had 3 in my teens done by the Stray cats tattooist so not awful - by the time I got to 30 I had them lazered off. I was so glad I did but all the people saying you can get them removed jeez the pain and the cost not for the faint hearted. I feel for you ♥️

Jconnais1chansonquivavsenerver · 01/02/2022 08:05

@thefirstmrsrochester

It’s none of your business.
OFGS! The OP gave birth to a child with, presumably, a beautiful unblemished skin, which said child has deliberately massively scarred. Of course it's her business! Though she can't say anything about it to her adult daughter, she can feel devastated about the disfigurement in private.
