Re Brexit. Whether you're for or against it, take note of who is behind the campaign to topple Boris. The eurosceptic ERG.

Claire Fox? Well remember there was Labour Leave and other left wing supporters of Brexit (including Jeremy Corbyn). We, of course, didn't have to have a right wing Brexit.

longwayoff · 03/02/2022 17:47

The Revolutionary Communist Party? er, blimey.

DePfeffoff · 03/02/2022 17:48
He said

I want to be very clear about this because a lot of people have got very hot under the collar, and I understand why

Let’s be absolutely clear, I’m talking not about the leader of the opposition’s personal record when he was DPP and I totally understand that he had nothing to do personally with those decisions

I was making a point about his responsibility for the organisation as a whole. And I think people can see that. And I really do want to clarify that because it is important

How does that last para fit with his own responsibilities for the party culture at No.10?
The great thing about that is that Johnson was seeking to draw a parallel between the Savile bollocks and the complaints about his own conduct. So now he has effectively acknowledged that there is no parallel, because of course we are talking about decisions that Johnson personally made in relation to allowing the birthday and garden events to carry on, to say nothing of parties that actually took place in his flat.

Tory election campaigners are going to be pretty pissed off that he has now ensured that they have to keep well away from that topic in either the local elections or any general election.

Tealightsandd · 03/02/2022 17:49

Ken Clarke, the tobacco man! 🚬👍

Anyone who knows my posts will know of my desire for an end to the anti smoking crusade.

Smoking would help relieve the cost of living crisis.

www.publicfinance.co.uk/news/2017/08/smoking-and-drinking-save-public-purse-money

I'm not his biggest fan but, hey yeah why not. I'm up for that.

Bring back Ken! (not Livingstone).

‘I believe it was wrong for you to imply this week that Keir Starmer was personally responsible for allowing Jimmy Savile to escape justice. There was no fair or reasonable basis for that assertion. This was not the usual cut and thrust of politics; it was an inappropriate and partisan reference to a horrendous case of child sex abuse. You tried to clarify your position today but, despite my urging, you did not apologise for the misleading impression you gave.’

Very succinct and to the point.

Wow. So he's basically thrown Raab under the bus as well, for coming out with the cut and thrust argument. And that's a direct confirmation that the pillock just doesn't pay any attention to his advisers.

It may be extreme, but really you have to worry about what would happen if all his advisers plus chiefs of staff and armed forces chiefs were advising against sending troops to Ukraine but Johnson decides he wants to have his Falklands moment?

I wonder whether the reason that they're limited to the likes of Dorries and Fabricant to do the interview rounds is that more senior/intelligent people are absolutely fed up with going out and claiming that Johnson did nothing wrong only to have him do a complete U turn and admit that in fact he did.

DePfeffoff · 03/02/2022 17:55

Sorry, that should have referred to she, not he in the first paragraph.

thecatfromjapan · 03/02/2022 17:56

I've no doubt Sunak is easing himself towards pole position.

I'm just thinking about how the whole mess is going to affect GE chances.

At one point, I'm sure the conservatives were hoping Johnson would take the hit coming to him, they'd swap him out, get a bit of a New Leader Bounce in the polls, and maybe scrape through to a GE win (they have a huge majority, Scotland's SNP, it'll take one hell of a swing to dislodge them).

But now I'm not sure.

Things are unravelling so fast for Johnson now - and the cost of living hit looks like being huge. The levelling-up stuff is a joke ...

It's hard to see Next Leader Sunak escaping all of that.

His coffee cup cost the same as his 'wad-of-money-on-an-elastic-band' loan- thing (to off-set fuel price rises).

I think he's going to have to be marketed really hard to escape claims of being an out-of-touch millionaire presiding over a catastrophic free-fall in the standard of living for most voters.

thecatfromjapan · 03/02/2022 17:59

Johnson won't send troops to the Ukraine.

He'll spaff about posturing - despite every sensible country trying to defuse the situation - because that's all he can do.

Notonthestairs · 03/02/2022 18:06

@longwayoff

The Revolutionary Communist Party? er, blimey.
Yes I raised an eyebrow at that!

The article also explains how/why^^ Dorries etc were promoted (but we already knew that really!)

thecatfromjapan · 03/02/2022 18:06

Given how much of the property crisis in the U.K. is driven by money laundering (& the role that played as a motivation for some in the ERG), anything Johnson says with regard to Ukraine is a massive joke.

ClaudineClare · 03/02/2022 18:09

Saw this on Twitter. Are the knives finally out and plots emerging?

"Munira Mirza, Johnson's policy director, resigns & passes her scorching resignation letter to James Forsyth of the Spectator. Forsyth was at school with Rishi Sunak & is godfather to his children (and married to Allegra Stratton)"

Peregrina · 03/02/2022 18:11

There must be a lot of Tory MPs and Tory activists, (if they still exist) who are absolutely fed up with having to defend Johnson to their constituents, who then does a screeching U turn, making them look complete and utter fools. Still many of them come into the Pig with a Blue Rosette category, so they may actually be fools.

Grantanow · 03/02/2022 18:12

The new Sunak energy loan is a scam. We get a discount now and pay it back in future years - costs the Treasury nothing despite the government creating the rotten energy market. We are now paying the price of their blunders. And the price is likely to go up in the autumn!

thecatfromjapan · 03/02/2022 18:13

Yep.

I love it when the Conservatives start the hunt for a New Leader.

Like the Hunger Games.

And Johnson clinging on promises to make it extremely protracted and nasty.

Sadly, I'm not sure any of the other contenders have as ruthless a team behind them as Sunak.

So we may not witness the joy of a rival faction leaking damaging stuff about NouveauRishi.

Which is a shame.

We've put up with so much crap from this government - we deserve a proper gladiatorial riot of backstabbing.

Everything seems to ponit to Sunak, you think he has been busy trying out his new camera?
Peregrina · 03/02/2022 18:16

I must admit, I do enjoy a good Tory blood letting when they get rid of a PM. Cameron denied them the pleasure and with May, it was more like having a sick cat put to sleep. (Except that she appears to have come to life again on the back benches, and could have a good career in being a thorn in Johnson's side.)

thecatfromjapan · 03/02/2022 18:17

That resignation letter may well be a way of telling all other contenders for the top job that it's Game Over for anyone who isn't on Team Sunak.

And will be very uncomfortable for anyone who isn't Team ERG.

(Which kills any fond but forlorn hopes to a return to a Party where the likes of Rory Stewart are going to have a seat ...).

Notonthestairs · 03/02/2022 18:18

LBC reporting Jack Doyle (Communications Director?) has resigned - nothing to do with Starmer smears & Partygate apparently. Always wanted to leave after 2 years.

Tealightsandd · 03/02/2022 18:18

Johnson decides he wants to have his Falklands moment?

It's not comparable to the Falklands.

It would be more akin to a Blair Iraq moment. (In which case, perhaps he'll go for it given it got Blair a knighthood...).

thecatfromjapan · 03/02/2022 18:19

😂

⭐️ for the amazing sick cat put to sleep simile.

I've missed you, Peregrina. I've not been on MN much and I've forgotten how you (& others) made me laugh in grim times. 💐

Tealightsandd · 03/02/2022 18:20

And will be very uncomfortable for anyone who isn't Team ERG.

Not least anyone who isn't rich.

If people think it's bad now...

It's one thing if Boris is going. But to cheer on an even more to the right replacement...?

thecatfromjapan · 03/02/2022 18:24

Well, Tealights, we have to hope that all of this - plus the catastrofuck coming down the line in terms of rising costs - busts the wheels of Sunak and his ERG pals.

🤷‍♀️

DuncinToffee · 03/02/2022 18:26

Lewis Goodall
Doyle had previously offered PM his resignation but wasn't accepted. JD was expected to leave as part of post Gray No10 reshuffle. A few wks ago we reported he was on invite list for Kate Josephs party. He wouldn't confirm to us whether or not he attended.

thecatfromjapan · 03/02/2022 18:27

And busts his wheels after he becomes Leader.
Enough to get rid of the lot of them in the next GE. 🤷‍♀️

Tealightsandd · 03/02/2022 18:27

Sunak is responsible for the making the already terrible public health housing and homelessness emergency worse.

He also took away £20 a week from the poorest...

.... whilst casually losing billions of taxpayer money to furlough fraud and dodgy PPE contracts.

I would possibly accept it as young and inexperienced panicked mistakes. But ERG backing is a huge red flag.

Then again, alarm bells rang when they launched their topple Boris campaign.

Make no mistake. Dethroning Boris is not for the public good. Quite the opposite.

Sometimes however much you might think you want something, it's worth taking a deeper look. The motivations and the whys say a lot.
