cannot reconcile the pain and sacrifice of the vast majority of the British Public during lockdown with the attitude and activities of those working in Downing Street"

Talk of pain and suffering of the British public... Red flag that the most most enthusiastic supporter of Boris going right now is the SARS-COV-2 minimalising Telegraph...

There'll be a heck of a lot more pain and suffering (in England) with the current removal of all mitigations (pushed for by the telegraph).

I emphasise mitigation because of course that is what masks, vaccines, and good ventilation are.

They are the very opposite of restrictions - because they help to keep society open and the economy running.

SARS-COV-2 mitigations are, like seat belts, child seats, and speeding limits for cars, what enable us to 'live with' a still new and evolving disease that kills and disables so many.

Tealightsandd · 02/02/2022 17:23

Him going for the right reasons is one thing. Whether that's the case here, however....

Let's just hope that whoever comes next isn't a case of out of the frying pan...

We can but hope.

Notonthestairs · 02/02/2022 17:28

He lied to Parliament.

If he lies about that what else will he lie about?

Tealightsandd · 02/02/2022 17:31

He lied to Parliament.

So did Blair. Iraq...
In his case, lying got him a knighthood.

Notonthestairs · 02/02/2022 17:33

Blair resigned. Johnson should do the same.

Blossomtoes · 02/02/2022 17:36

This thread is about our current PM. Please feel free to start one about Blair if you wish to discuss him.
Tealightsandd · 02/02/2022 17:36

Let's face it. There's an old joke I've heard over the years. That being a good liar is almost a prerequisite for Parliament.

I suppose Boris's failing is getting caught out.

He's not dealt with the pandemic well (an understatement!) and he's not the best Prime Minister, but I do worry about the motivations of this particular ousting attempt - and who will replace him.

But who knows. Perhaps I'm too suspicious. Perhaps we will all be pleasantly surprised?

Peregrina · 02/02/2022 17:37

And an awful lot of people have protested about Blair eventually being offered a knighthood.

Tealightsandd · 02/02/2022 17:38

@Notonthestairs

He clung on long enough (despite Brown's hard pushing).
Peregrina · 02/02/2022 17:41

but I do worry about the motivations of this particular ousting attempt - and who will replace him.

Overloaded email inboxes and bulging post bags from angry constituents making them worry about retaining their seats at the next election?

Perhaps I am too cynical.

Tealightsandd · 02/02/2022 17:42

Those on here. Who do you want to replace Boris? Twelve Homes? Patel? Raab?

Perhaps Gove? I guess he has the working class background credentials (to appeal to those who aren't happy with the Eton crowd)

Tealightsandd · 02/02/2022 17:45

@Peregrina

Many of the so called red wall voters have told reporters they don't care about the booze ups in Downing Street, and they still like Boris.

As for the affluent shires. It's a combination of Nimbyism (see the recent Amersham and Chesham Lib Dem win) and constant in your face anti southern 'levelling up' mantra.

Peregrina · 02/02/2022 17:46

Gove really isn't working class - not since his adoption as a baby, whatever his first 4 months were like.

Gove was also privately educated, although not in England, and I suspect his own ability helped him get there.

I don't like Gove, that's an understatement - he was a disaster at education - but I don't think he would lie and lie and lie like Johnson. I think he would try to do the PM's job conscientiously if it came his way.

Lottapianos · 02/02/2022 17:46

'Those on here. Who do you want to replace Boris? Twelve Homes? Patel? Raab?'

I don't really give a fig. Whoever they pick, it will continue to be an utter catastrophe. But it won't be HIM. He's had his fun, playing at being World King and disgracing the party and the entire country. Time for him to sod off in total disgrace and for the Tories to do some hard thinking about just how much muck and sleaze they are prepared to tolerate

Blossomtoes · 02/02/2022 17:47

I’d settle for Hunt or Javid - although he’s tainted by association. All I really want is a grown up with some integrity. They’ve got more than 300 to choose from, after all.

Tealightsandd · 02/02/2022 17:48

Gove was adopted by a working class family.

He was very academic and won a scholarship to a private grammar school.

He was the first in his (adopted) family to go to university.

DuncinToffee · 02/02/2022 17:49

Gove has just been caught out c&p wikipedia on his levelling up paper Grin

Peregrina · 02/02/2022 17:50

Gove was adopted by a working class family.

I don't think so. His father owned a fish processing business which he sold. If Gove's father had been a labourer or a lorry driver then we could agree.

DuncinToffee · 02/02/2022 17:53

Tugendhat has been mentioned on these threads, I think he is a decent shout.

CorrBlimeyGG · 02/02/2022 17:55

He was very academic and won a scholarship to a private grammar school.

His family were not working class. They paid for him to go to independent school, he got a scholarship for the sixth form.

Tealightsandd · 02/02/2022 18:01

The pandemic preparedness exercise - and it's subsequent ignoral - was on Hunt's watch. Likewise many NHS cuts. He also supported harsh benefit 'reforms'. That said, we all make mistakes. If he's willing to learn and grow, maybe?

Javid. I'd question his integrity - certainly towards the more vulnerable in society. He replaced Hancock in order to take our pandemic policy in a direction that increased daily deaths to what he called a 'low stable' of 100-200 a day.

He next steered us towards the recent 300-400 killed by Covid a day 'mild' cases.

He is seemingly in blissful denial of the looming health and economic disaster that is a significant proportion of the working age population disabled with Long Covid.

Of course, as with Hunt, perhaps Javid is willing and able to learn and grow, and change direction?

UnconditionalSurrender · 02/02/2022 18:03

I dont really care who we get. I'm not a Tory voter so none of them would be to my liking. Whoever it is won't have whatever ludicrous attraction Johnsons bumbling schtick had ( in the past) and maybe voters will actually look at what a mess the Tory government has made with Brexit implementation (or lack thereof), cost of living hikes, poverty, corruption etc etc and punish them for it at the ballot box.
The shines off Johnson so those MPS clinging on to the coat tails of the blonde haired twat need to wake up and find someone half decent to get them out of the mess he has got us and them into.

Tealightsandd · 02/02/2022 18:06

Wrt Michael Gove's parents. They were working class. They managed to work their way up to what some might describe as a lower middle class lifestyle. Eventually. But working class they most definitely were. In terms of background, and life chances, experiences, and opportunities.

the80sweregreat · 02/02/2022 18:06

The next election , that all hinges on the 'red wall ' now blue wall voters and how they feel
This new money being thrown their way will help a lot no doubt. Even if it's a long term project.
They also will become bored with partygate or not that interested over time as it drops out the news.
Kier Starmer hasn't got what it takes, sadly.
The LP could do with a new direction and leader and deputy and another overhaul! Some new positive policies might be a good idea too.
I wished that Boris Johnson would go , but seems he won't be doing anything now and they won't get rid of him yet.
Tugendhat is ex army, that will go well with the voters if he does end up getting the top job in the future.
I'm not a Tory and never voted for them , but never underestimate them winning elections against the all the odds.

Tealightsandd · 02/02/2022 18:16

My jury's still out on Keir. I think it's not hopeless. He still has potential - but, and big but, he does need to make a few tweaks and changes to policy and direction (including moving away from Blair's war on the disabled).

Perhaps he won't but it's not impossible. Although - he does need his party to get behind him and support what he does.

We shall see.
