are you clavinova?

I'm not weird at all - neither do I work for party HQ.

callingon · 01/02/2022 18:42

“some would even have us believe that the "government" were at these parties when it is obvious that they were primarily for No.10 staff”

How is this obvious? I thought we were waiting for a police investigation to be over Wink. I mean Boris Johnson was definitely at his own birthday party as he has told us he was and I would be very surprised to discover he didn’t know there was a party going on in his own flat. Perhaps he stayed in his room the whole time?

Much like the nadir dorries interview up thread - defending BJ at this point just makes it seem like he could do anything and you would still defend him. As Krishnan Guru Murphy said - what would it take to stop defending him?

Alexandra2001 · 01/02/2022 18:45

Be that as it may, the only decent thing you ve ever said that i agree with is you don't like Trump but then go all out to defend our own version, who is increasingly using the tactics of the American 'right.

I think you'd do your case a lot of good if you were a little more balanced? no political leader or party is without fault, inc BJ/Tories or KS/Labour party.

callingon · 01/02/2022 18:48

I feel like BJ could send out a tweet tonight saying - #sorrynotsorry I did go on a bender with Carrie and the lads but we had a right laugh so I don’t regret it - and there would posters saying, oh well I know my place and it’s not for me to criticise my betters.

Yes a lot of diversion onto events 14 years ago but not quite so keen to talk about how BJ et al have allowed the Met to continue to spiral downwards.... perhaps questions need to asked as to why Dicks contract was renewed? or is that obvious....
Peregrina · 01/02/2022 19:14

The Conservatives and subsequently BJ have been in power for 11 years, if there is issues with the behavior of the staff around them, then whose fault is that?

Well, it was probably French, Italian or German wine, so we can blame the EU.

I am quite sure if that the pandemic had struck during May's tenure we would not have seen any parties at No.10/11.

DuncinToffee · 01/02/2022 19:20

Remember how we laughed at Trump?

Ros Atkins
On Monday, Boris Johnson accused Sir Keir Starmer of "failing to prosecute Jimmy Savile". But there’s no evidence Sir Keir was involved in the decision not to charge Savile. 2 mins on what’s happened since the allegation was made. Produced by Michael Cox.

One of the Red WallThickosTories has put forward the analogy of breaking covid rules being akin to parking offences.

Where have we heard that line being trotted out before?🤷‍♀️

DePfeffoff · 01/02/2022 19:51

@Florianus

DePfeffoff: And none of that changes the fact that they are responsible for what their department does.

Exactly, and that is at the root of the whole rotten system. Civil servants know that their minister will take the blame for whatever they do wrong.

As has correctly been pointed out, that certainly doesn't mean that the civil servant has a Get out of jail free card. And it does mean that any cabinet minister with any sense puts mechanisms in place to ensure that s/he is fully respected and has a degree of control. If you're a lazy, corrupt sod like Johnson, or a thicko like Dorries, of course that doesn't work.

You sound like Ed Davey - Sir Nicholas Soames phoned LBC on Sunday after Ed Davey's appearance - he said Davey was playing "infantile politics" with his comments and tweets about the Met and No 10.

DePfeffoff · 01/02/2022 19:59

Interesting situation with the Nadir C4 interview. Johnson at least had enough sense of self-protection to confine his slander about Starmer to the HoC where it was privileged. However, Nadir was so eager to defend him that when that issue was put to her she insisted that Johnson lies about nothing, including that. So by implication she was repeating the slander and claiming it was true - without the benefit of parliamentary privilege.

I do hope that Messrs Sue, Grabbit and Runne are at this very moment drafting their formal pre-action letter to her.

DuncinToffee · 01/02/2022 20:02

I guess it is better to sound like Ed Davey on LBC than Nadine Dorries on C4...

To be fair to Clavinova, she's entitled to be one-sided, and she's good entertainment value on this thread, scraping around for evidence of wrongdoing by those not in the Conservative party.

DePfeffoff · 01/02/2022 20:09

Interesting information in light of the squirrels' insistence that Johnson is doing wonderful things for the economy:

twitter.com/JJHTweets/status/1488507654808948736

Weakest economical recovery from Covid in the G7, sadly. But when our chancellor can't be bothered to recover £4.3 billion lost in fraud and the DoH admits it wasted £18 billion on useless or superfluous PPE, that's hardly surprising.

Well that same chancellor is the likely successor, if Boris goes so...

Fun times ahead with Silent But Deadly Twelve Homes Sunak.

Did I mention that Ed Davey received a donation from the 'Chinese spy'? Grin

Sometimes both parties can be wrong. (By parties, I mean individuals rather than booze ups).

The Lib Dems are the ultimate NIMBYs - holding up Refugees Welcome placards...but recent election campaigns run (and won) on opposing housing developments in their leafy shires. People (both UK born and migrant) need and deserve decent affordable housing - nationwide, Lib Dem areas included.

(Bloomberg) -- Britain will be the fastest growing major industrial economy for a second consecutive year in 2022, the International Monetary Fund said. The Washington-based institution expects 4.7% growth in the U.K. this year after a 7.2% expansion in 2021, putting it at the top of the growth table in the Group of Seven nations for two consecutive years.

Tealightsandd · 01/02/2022 20:25

If it's true that we have a good economy, than we can afford to deal with the public health housing and homelessness emergency - including a construction industry boosting mass social housing build.

Of course it also makes economical sense - given that the public health housing and homelessness emergency costs the taxpayer many many billions.

CryingAtTheDiscotheque · 01/02/2022 20:26

We’re fastest growing because we fell so far and fast due to covid and brexit - hardly something to boast about

Still, we remain a rich country. We could and should tackle the public health housing and homelessness emergency.

And actually even if we weren't a wealthy country - because, as I say, the public health housing and homelessness emergency costs the taxpayer many billions.

Exactly that. The Tories are so good at creating a false narrative when it comes to the economy. Remember the 2008 crash that they maintained was due to Labour profligacy? Nothing to do with a global recession, of course. The subsequent deficit that, despite austerity, they managed to increase over the first six years they were in power? The party of low taxation that presides over the highest taxation for 70 years? They’re full of shit.

The UK economy surpassed pre-Covid levels for the first time in November after recording stronger-than-expected growth.

The Office for National Statistics said gross domestic product (GDP) expanded by 0.9% between October and November.

That was higher than economists' expectations and meant the economy was 0.7% larger than in February 2020.
