The CS used to make a big thing about Established Civil Servants, which temporary ones weren't.

DuncinToffee · 01/02/2022 17:09

This CS thing is getting ridiculous, the PM needs a minder now.

Anyway
UPDATE: The PM spokesperson now says that if the PM received a fixed penalty notice for breaching Covid laws, then No 10 WOULD make this public. Comes just hours after saying the opposite

Notonthestairs · 01/02/2022 17:13

"Unless they'd all bunked off to Chequers."

Do we think they had gatherings at Chequers by any chance? I don't suppose we will ever know (and God knows I wouldn't believe anything they said) but they don't seem the type to opt for a quiet weekend.

Peregrina · 01/02/2022 17:13

The PM's spokesperson must be getting dizzy with all the U-turns.

ClaudineClare · 01/02/2022 17:14

"SPaDs are classified as "temporary civil servants".

Who don't have to adhere to the Civil Service Code and do not have to be politically impartial. They are "technically" temporary civil servants but in reality are not. For example, they cannot line manage civil servants.

ClaudineClare · 01/02/2022 17:16

This explains the myriad of ways in which Spads are not civil servants.

ClaudineClare · 01/02/2022 17:19

So it is best to give SpAds the clear impression that you believe that their Minister walks on water. They will suspect that you are lying but respect you for it 🤣

Dick has probably already told Johnson that no FPNs are coming his way.

@CryingAtTheDiscotheque

I imagine the bullies took their cue from the top
The (full) SG report needs to establish who those with concerns complained to and why that person did nothing to act.

And our page starts with "Special Advisers are, as their name suggests, a special type of civil servant." Grin

Florianus · 01/02/2022 17:31

This CS thing is getting ridiculous

Certain people who post here dislike the fact that civil servants are mentioned, because they want to blame Johnson for everything - some would even have us believe that the "government" were at these parties when it is obvious that they were primarily for No.10 staff

ClaudineClare · 01/02/2022 17:32

Yes, it also features a quote from a spad

The last thing any Secretary of State needs is another Civil Servant. They’ve got enough of them and that’s not really meant as a criticism, it is just you inevitably inherit a policy inertia … You were eyes and ears for policy going awry and also the eyes and ears for policy initiatives that you’ve inherited perfectly innocently that of course are now contrary to government policy or government intent. We were a third party, a devil’s advocate Grin

So even spads don't see themselves as civil servants. Civil servants certainly don't see them as such. We see them as mostly arrogant irritants.

Anyway, I have now fed a 🐿 when I swore not toAngry.

DuncinToffee · 01/02/2022 17:34

Sure Florianus

Florianus · 01/02/2022 17:34

ClaudineClare:
Dick has probably already told Johnson that no FPNs are coming his way.

It was notable that the event with Boris and staff photographed at a table in the garden, with wine and a cheese board, has already been ruled out of any investigation by the Met on the basis that it did not meet the minimum standard for investigation. I've no idea why.

Florianus · 01/02/2022 17:39

ClaudineClare:

As far as I can see, spads see normal civil servants as inferior. Didn't Cummings start advertising for a new type of CS who could disrupt traditional models?

Anyway, to get back to the point, it has become a convention to include Spads with Civil Servants to avoid verbosity - and. as the website you kindly referenced so clearly states "Special Advisers are, as their name suggests, a special type of civil servant", so I don't see the point of arguing the toss over it.

, because they want to blame Johnson for everything

He's the PM in case you hadn't noticed. The party culture came from the top because HE was doing it too

I'm highly used at posters doing their damndest to absolve him from blame.

He was not running a tight ship. His responsibility

Roussette · 01/02/2022 18:07

Highly amused

The problem with this, is that it answers one narrow question but not anything more broadly.

Alexandra2001 · 01/02/2022 18:15

@Florianus

CSWife: Believe it or not, quite a few, dare I say most, civil servants do actually have some pride, dignity, honesty and integrity. But don't let that get in the way of your civil servant bashing arguments on this thread based on historical tenuous contact.

I have no doubt that many civil servants do a good job, but do you think that bringing in a suitcase of wine and partying is doing a good job?

Depends who asked them and what is the culture of the work place.... bit like with the Met and their Banter isn't it?

Which is no great surprise when you have a liar, a racist and misogynist as PM.

Boris looks like he enjoys a drink or 5, encouraged staff to let of steam on fridays... i'd say those CS's buying drink were doing what the boss wanted.

Alexandra2001 · 01/02/2022 18:18

Nearly right. Sue Gray has already indicated that the cause goes well beyond one person and extends to the confused hierarchy in No.10 and to the Cabinet Office. She also mentioned that an unnamed person, who is almost certainly Martin Reynolds, has too much responsibility

The Conservatives and subsequently BJ have been in power for 11 years, if there is issues with the behavior of the staff around them, then whose fault is that?

DuncinToffee · 01/02/2022 18:25

Alexandra2001, Corbyn obviously

Batholemubrecht · 01/02/2022 18:35

@Florianus do you work for party HQ or just like playing devil's advocate ? Honest question because on every thread you defend him. He cannot do no wrong. You absolve him of any responsibility for anything he does. It's this weird single minded determination to excuse him which most people even loyal party members don't do...are you clavinova ?
