@Florianus

DePfeffoff: And none of that changes the fact that they are responsible for what their department does.

Exactly, and that is at the root of the whole rotten system. Civil servants know that their minister will take the blame for whatever they do wrong.

Believe it or not, quite a few, dare I say most, civil servants do actually have some pride, dignity, honesty and integrity.

But don't let that get in the way of your civil servant bashing arguments on this thread based on historical tenuous contact.

As you were.

I have no doubt that many civil servants do a good job, but do you think that bringing in a suitcase of wine and partying is doing a good job?

"After a great deal of soul-searching, I have reached the conclusion that the Prime Minister should resign"

Peter Aldous (MP for Waveney) has submitted his letter.

I just saw that too. Could this be the beginning of the end?

Sir Gary Streeter (SW Devon) has said that he is considering putting in a letter to the 1922 and will decide in the next 48 hours.

There is a theory that Johnson’s position on Europe is routed in childhood trauma.

I can only assume that some people have had similarly traumatic experiences with the civil service…

CSWife · 01/02/2022 16:22

@Florianus No, of course not. But I maintain the cause of the issue is the leader and his team in No. 10 and not the wider civil service.

@Rinoachicken

Ooo just seen that the Met have announced they have been 300 photos relating to the Downing St gatherings.

PLEASE let them be leaked

Please don't leak them until I have recovered from the Abba medleys. I have been experiencing fits of laughter at thought of them dancing to 'Waterloo' and I think I might die in agony if there are photos of said activities.

Nearly right. Sue Gray has already indicated that the cause goes well beyond one person and extends to the confused hierarchy in No.10 and to the Cabinet Office. She also mentioned that an unnamed person, who is almost certainly Martin Reynolds, has too much responsibility.
merrymouse · 01/02/2022 16:32

What crap you come out with. Why are you so keen to let all those Downing Street party-goers off the hook?

Why would you think I was referring to you?

CSWife · 01/02/2022 16:32

I've just caught up with Nadir's C4 interview. (Had seen the BBC and Sky ones). Puerile springs to mind.

Do we know that this was a Civil Servant? For all we know it could have been one of Carrie's chums. Should we not be waiting for the enquiry (whichever one!) before casting aspersions?

Peregrina · 01/02/2022 16:47

Personally I would have no problem if the Met said that xx FPN notices were issued, with no names,, as far as the Junior staff go. For the more Senior ones it's a different matter - they are paid more because they are in a position of responsibility.

The PM and Carrie were at Chequers that evening(the eve of Prince Philip's funeral). Reports in the press stated that about 30 advisers and civil servants gathered after work for two separate events.
Blossomtoes · 01/02/2022 16:53

@Florianus

DePfeffoff: What she said about the garden event was: ... the garden was also used for gatherings without clear authorisation or oversight. This was not appropriate.

Exactly.

Exactly what?

The Met have said that they will state the number of FPNs issued, along with the reason(s) for the offences, but they will not name anyone, however senior.
Florianus · 01/02/2022 16:55

Sorry, should have added that they said this policy is in accord with standing instructions on the issue of FPNs from the College of Policing.

Florianus · 01/02/2022 16:57

Blossomtoes:

Exactly what I have been saying for some weeks now. The events in the garden were unauthorised and unsupervised.

Apparently many civil servants protested the parties but we're bullied into silence.
Peregrina · 01/02/2022 17:02

It could of course have been a SPaD who took the suitcase of wine in! Unless they'd all bunked off to Chequers.

SPaDs are classified as "temporary civil servants".

Another indication that there was no proper supervision of the bullies.

Yes, Sue Gray refers expressly to this in her update

CryingAtTheDiscotheque · 01/02/2022 17:07

I imagine the bullies took their cue from the top
