It's okay to wear clothes then return them for a refund

Kay Burley on Sky News mentioned an article in one of the papers covering what happens to clothing purchased online and returned (not sure which retailer). Apparently they go to a big warehouse to be sorted and are given a 'sniff' test - to which KB said "c'mon, we've all done it"

AIBU to think that the majority of people don't order clothes, wear them, then return items in a smelly state for a refund? I have never done this unless the item has developed a fault after wearing it - and I've definitely never returned clothing smelling of sweat or anything else.

YABU - it's perfectly okay to wear something then return it for a refund, even if it's not faulty - it's one of life's perks.

YANBU - the majority of people don't do a KB!

YANBU
This is totally out of order.
The only time I would return a purchase would be if there was a defect or it didn't fit as expected. I certainly wouldn't 'wear' these items first.

Wow- here's me playing chicken with items I like- waiting for the sale so I can buy them and people are buying, wearing and returning whole wardrobes worth of outfits including swimwear?! I feel so naive! That's a real eye opener.

Anyone who does this is desperate and disgusting.
Kay Burley should be ashamed of herself.

20 odd years ago there was a thread on the ebay boards. A seller had sold an exspensive new dress to the next town over. While out for a meal there was a big family party and she recognised the dress on a woman. Few days later buyer sends dress back for refund tags still on. I think she challenged the buyer and said she saw it being worn there. Cannot remember the result but it was a great thread.

Suzi888 · 01/02/2022 19:27

Grim, very grim…. and I know two people that do it. Febreze and air the item. I always wash new clothes now.
Basically what you buy is then second hand.

CarriesHandbag · 01/02/2022 19:29

Yeuk! That's just wrong and the 2% who voted that it's okay should be ashamed of themselves.

Woobeedoo · 01/02/2022 19:29

I was in a New Look many years ago trying on shoes and picked up one pair which’d clearly been worn and sneaked back on the rack.

I handed them to a cashier who sighed and said that it happens a lot. Girls would even go in to the changing rooms in clothes they’d bought there a few weeks/months ago and simply swap them over for a nice new version. Staff had even discovered dirty knickers and bras swapped over too - I mean just 🤮

Pinkmouse15 · 01/02/2022 19:29

Celebs being rude to people! Really who would have thought it. Darling daughter was a model for same agency as Miss Moss so we saw lots of celebrities close to. Some were v.sweet but an awful lot were rude and disrespectful to everyone.

Rosscameasdoody · 01/02/2022 19:31

My friend was a manager for a well known womens’ fashion company and worked on the shop floor at an outlet in a department store. I don’t think there’s anything she hasn’t seen. She’s had people trying to return stuff that they’ve not only worn, but washed, before returning - she can smell Persil non bio at twenty paces !! She’s also had her fair share of items returned with no receipt, as faulty. She knows full well that the seams have been deliberately unpicked and buttons torn off. Shameful.

MrsLighthouse · 01/02/2022 19:36

I’d NEVER do that….how low

RestingStitchFace · 01/02/2022 19:37

I have never done this - it's downright dishonest...

Hawkins001 · 01/02/2022 19:38

If I'm buying new, I expect it new, not nearly new, not worn returned, then repackaged, as at a guess false advertising unless somehow the meaning of new, has been altered.

Jem57 · 01/02/2022 19:40

I was a Manager at a week known clothes store, you wouldn’t believe the items that customers have tried to get a refund on,coats with snotty tissues in the pocket, stained blouses, trousers with food stains and even worn knickers,I kid you not,no words!

Usernamerequired · 01/02/2022 19:41

Disgraceful thing to do. I know people who have bought an expensive outfit to wear to a wedding then pull threads on the hem and return it as faulty. Very dishonest and crass thing to do

Anabella23 · 01/02/2022 19:45

Why oh why would anyone think this is ok to do, it is disgusting and people who do this should be treated as criminals

Usernamerequired · 01/02/2022 19:47

@Rosscameasdoody yes as a manager in retail myself i can also smell persil a mile off. Never understood that, still stank of smoke anyway🙄 but it still has the label on it (because they were the easiest to poke through and replace) Still see one the families that did this regularly in the shopping centre and in local papers for shoplifting

EthelMerman · 01/02/2022 19:49

I want to believe nice people don’t wear clothes then return them but they do, I work with someone who regularly does this. Once in a blue moon she’ll keep something but mostly she treats clothing retailers as lending libraries. She’s not rolling in money but equally isn’t so short of dosh she needs to return the clothes. The majority of purchases are not cause she ordered an item in two different sizes.

This person went travelling, kept the labels on everything. When she arrived home, she returned anything unworn along with anything she worn but unmarked.

It really, really irritates me. It’s rank but at least not as bad as some of the posts in this thread.

grey12 · 01/02/2022 19:50

Only if it's faulty 🤷🏻‍♀️

Flingingmelon · 01/02/2022 19:53

My job is partially to deal with faulty product. If someone returns something and ticks a return box stating that the product is faulty it's logged, if it's logged more than once or twice I have to raise an investigation with the factory who made it.

I spend an annoying amount of time raising investigations on products that people have worn and returned, claiming it's 'faulty'.

More importantly, so do the poor staff at the factory who are KPId on these 'faulty' returns.

So next time you do it, consider the people who are being investigated because you weren't the only one Angry

Twillow · 01/02/2022 19:56

No, it's not. I know a lot of people convince themselves that it's just the same as trying them on and returning, but it really isn't. It's not quite theft but it is immoral.

Ontheblink · 01/02/2022 19:59

I haven’t done this and would never do it, it is disgusting 🤢.

Ontheblink · 01/02/2022 20:00

It is theft, and those that convince themselves otherwise really need to question their morals.

Ontheblink · 01/02/2022 20:02

Someone needs to invent a device which can detect how long a garment has been worn for by the same person for any length of time. It might work as a deterrent for the CF who do this

TheRemotePart · 01/02/2022 20:08

People used to febreese clothes to “ disguise” the fag smell lol now it just stinks of febreeze
And your streaky arm pit tan
