It's okay to wear clothes then return them for a refund

Kay Burley on Sky News mentioned an article in one of the papers covering what happens to clothing purchased online and returned (not sure which retailer). Apparently they go to a big warehouse to be sorted and are given a 'sniff' test - to which KB said "c'mon, we've all done it"

AIBU to think that the majority of people don't order clothes, wear them, then return items in a smelly state for a refund? I have never done this unless the item has developed a fault after wearing it - and I've definitely never returned clothing smelling of sweat or anything else.

YABU - it's perfectly okay to wear something then return it for a refund, even if it's not faulty - it's one of life's perks.

YANBU - the majority of people don't do a KB!

Why not hire one from the many online hire companies such as WardrobeHQ, which is one I use for expensive clothes I would not want
or need to wear regularly?

WhoKnowsProbsNotMe · 01/02/2022 17:45

I would never.

The only scenario that would ever make this ok is if you wore it once and the item was faulty (the stitching all came away, zip broke etc.)

There are websites designed for renting expensive clothing etc. so if people want to wear something they can’t afford there’s no excuse!

Well that's entirely different. That's returning faulty goods.

It’s mainly Instagram ‘influencers’ that do that l. The worst thing is the mommy YouTubers who order a load of baby gear to put out ‘review videos’ then send half the items back after testing. Ever wondered why sometimes things look like seconds. Ewww

This exactly! if you can’t justify an expensive dress to wear to a wedding, party etc. (which realistically when it comes to designer clothes is the majority of us) just rent it!

I used to work in New Look, it happens a LOT and it's gross! Once had a young girl try to return a top with breast milk stains on it 🤮

Bogeyes · 01/02/2022 17:51

Only mingers do this!

CheapFoodShits · 01/02/2022 17:52

I used to work at a concession in a department store and a woman once brought back a dress she'd bought to wear on Christmas Day. She wanted a refund because the material had changed texture and part of the lining had ripped when she'd washed it. She handed it to me inside out, hoping I wouldn't notice the huge grease stain where she'd clearly slopped half her roast dinner down it. It stunk of cigs and cheap perfume. It was a silk dress with clear instructions on the label: "Dry clean only". I was ready to send her packing but my manager was far too kind and offered her an exchange 🙄.

There was another time when someone working on another concession did a refund for a Lola Rose necklace. She brought it to me and said "Have you seen this? Would you pay £100 for this? They bought in the London store". The label was a tiny card one that just tied on to the necklace. So the crafty so and so had bought a £100 Lola Rose necklace and put the tag on a cheap plastic bead necklace and returned that instead.

People are honestly awful.

I remember working in a high street retailer in the 00s and every Monday/ Tuesday girls would try to do exactly this. Wear the dress and the. Try to return. We had to keep scissors off the desk as we would get threatened with them if we didn’t take the (fake tanned, deodorant smelling) garments back

MackenCheese · 01/02/2022 17:55

Crikey O'Riley! I wouldn't dream of doing this!! Some people are just so dishonest smh

wingsanddreams · 01/02/2022 17:55

Never! I always try clothes as soon as I get home and make a quick decision so I can return items the next day or two. I was shocked once in Uniqlo. The woman before me in the queue returned a wool coat that clearly had been worn for a long time, the fabric was over stretched and covered with wrinkles and bobbles. She got her money back without any questions. Some people are just thick skinned.

Whoopsmahoot · 01/02/2022 17:55

Never have, never would. Rank and disrespectful to others.

sabbii · 01/02/2022 17:56

@SoupDragon

My opinion is that only twats do this.
hit the nail on the head
KarenTheGammonRemoaner · 01/02/2022 17:57

I guess this is why people wash new clothes. I never have in my 40 years, never had any issue online either, and no I don't do this but couldn't care less if people do.

BillyAndTheSillies · 01/02/2022 17:59

I've recently had items arrive where the tag is on a ribbon and goes from neck to hem on dresses or is attached right at the front of the item to avoid this.

Ordered a dress from warehouse just before Christmas. Knew it would be a return because it kept going in and out of stock, turned up and smelt so sweaty and gross so had clearly been ordered for a night out and returned.

I just rent dresses for events now, at least that way I'm under no illusion it's brand new.

The hauls I see on Instagram are disgraceful. You know none of it will get worn. Asos used to strike you off if you did too many returns, wonder if they still do that now?

Cazziebo · 01/02/2022 18:03

Former retail manager for fashion store here (long time ago!) Yes, very common for customers to wear and return. And it was usually the "posh folks" who were the most brazen!

ChickenStripper · 01/02/2022 18:04

You're a minger if you do this. 🤮

gogohm · 01/02/2022 18:04

No of course not, I try on and then repack if it doesn't fit

Mandyjack · 01/02/2022 18:04

I've never bought anything with the intention of wearing and return it. I try stuff on and if I don't like it then it goes back

blyn72 · 01/02/2022 18:05

I can't imagine returning something dirty. Most people will try something on to make sure it fits and suits. It's best to do that when you are clean and haven't used anything scented.

Theblacksheepandme · 01/02/2022 18:06

It is absolutely wrong to do this. My teen daughter told me a lot of the girls that go to teen discos do this. She came home telling me this and she was disgusted by it. The thought that she could buy something that someone wore on a night out already made her cross.

People have been doing it long before social media.
gogohm · 01/02/2022 18:07

@LoisLane66

Unfortunately rental places rarely stock larger sizes, I'm a 16 and couldn't find anything to rent last time I needed an evening gown

Supersimkin2 · 01/02/2022 18:08

What drives me nuts is when you try and return something genuinely faulty - trousers where the buttons flop off in an hour - and you get the Gestapo treatment.

No, I don’t need a teenager sniffing my trousers in front of me. Certainly not there. Or the boot-faced manager who issues an exchange so grudgingly it looks like she’s signing her PFB’s execution warrant.

I just want trousers that stay on. Paul Smith.

LoisLane66 · 01/02/2022 18:10

@gogohm
Yes, I realised that when I started renting. Saw a lovely dress today which I was interested in buying from MyWardrobe HQ but only in sizes 6 8 10 🙁
