It's okay to wear clothes then return them for a refund

Kay Burley on Sky News mentioned an article in one of the papers covering what happens to clothing purchased online and returned (not sure which retailer). Apparently they go to a big warehouse to be sorted and are given a 'sniff' test - to which KB said "c'mon, we've all done it"

AIBU to think that the majority of people don't order clothes, wear them, then return items in a smelly state for a refund? I have never done this unless the item has developed a fault after wearing it - and I've definitely never returned clothing smelling of sweat or anything else.

YABU - it's perfectly okay to wear something then return it for a refund, even if it's not faulty - it's one of life's perks.

YANBU - the majority of people don't do a KB!

My opinion is that only twats do this.

Dammitthisisshit · 31/01/2022 09:28

Eeew Yuck. Would never do this and it puts me off buying online as much as I do!

dorkfink · 31/01/2022 09:28

i wouldn't ever do this

cheekychaplin · 31/01/2022 09:28

Anyone who has ever worked in retail will tell you customers are brazen and will attempt to return anything. It's much more common than you would think.

CraterAid · 31/01/2022 09:28

I'm with @SoupDragon

MermaidEyes · 31/01/2022 09:29

It's grim but plenty of people must do it because more than once I've received items that definitely smell worn. I only ever return things with tags on that don't fit.

TooMuchPaper · 31/01/2022 09:30

Yes people do it. Hence why clothes are sniffed by the staff when being checked. I've seen Marks and Spencers staff sniff the crotch of trousers and the armpits of t-shirts.

Maireas · 31/01/2022 09:30

I saw that. There's a massive warehouse where they actually sniff the clothing (oh yes) get rid of stains, mend torn items and bag them up for resale. A lot can't be rescued and go into landfill.
They say 1 in 3 online clothes purchases are returned.

N0Name · 31/01/2022 09:31

I suppose if you had no morals or understanding of common decency then it would be fine.

It is a shitty thing to do.

BashfulClam · 31/01/2022 09:32

People do this but it’s rank. If you work In retail nothing is a surprise.

SniffMyFeet · 31/01/2022 09:32

No, it's disgusting, dishonest and totally unfair on retailer's
Who, especially in this climate thinks that thats OK, it's a scummy thing to do

StoneofDestiny · 31/01/2022 09:32

I'd never do it and people who do are obnoxious

eurochick · 31/01/2022 09:34

I'd never do this. The only exception would be if there's a defect. For example I returned some £100 trousers last year when the seam split after one wear.

ShirleyPhallus · 31/01/2022 09:34

Yes people do it but I’m not one of those

But I have been sent a garment which was obviously worn and then reissued to me, it smelt of cheap perfume and a vaguely smoky house. Was really irritated.

Cherrysoup · 31/01/2022 09:36

Some presenter tried this with an item with low stock, smeared peanut butter on the crotch or something, returned them then re-ordered the same item and received back the same pair! He did it as a test, not to try to return used Clothes, iyswim.

ANameChangeAgain · 31/01/2022 09:37

Its revolting and should be treated as theft. My ex sil used to buy special occasion clothes that she couldn't afford and damage them to return as fault. She would unpick seams and hems. We all thought it was disgusting.

DropYourSword · 31/01/2022 09:37

I've never ever done that, and would really judge people that do. No, we all haven't been completely cheeky fuckers

CecilyP · 31/01/2022 09:39

It’s theft. Really no different to shoplifting. Just a better chance of getting away with it.

FlorrieFosdyke · 31/01/2022 09:43

Nope, never done this. The only time I have taken an item of clothing back after I've worn it is if it has a fault and even then I wash it first.

Chishnfips · 31/01/2022 09:44

Joe lycett. Trying to make a point with PrettyLittleThing or boohoo, one of the two.

I used to know a woman that did this and I found out in the most red faced way. I kept noticing the tags hanging out of her clothes when we were out and about. It didn't occur to me that she was keeping them on for a reason and one night (in a bar) I tried to be helpful by just plucking it off.

She went absolutely nuts at me and told me I'd just cost her £40. She wanted me to pay her the money 🤦🏻‍♀️ I didn't, naturally. But we didn't speak again.

In hindsight I understand now that for some people it's a "thing" and she thought I was being totally unreasonable or rude or perhaps trying to shame her. At the time I was totally befuddled by it.

I find it a lot less odd now that I'm switched on to all this about fast fashion. There's clearly a market for "clothes swaps", especially amongst young women that "need" a new outfit for every night out and would be happy to send it back afterwards.

I know these clothes swaps things do exist, but I really think they'd take off big time if companies such as ASOS collaborated with them.

DisforDarkChocolate · 31/01/2022 09:45

I would never do this.

PeeAche · 31/01/2022 09:45

It's just dawned on me that this post is either a journalist's plant or going to be picked up by the Daily Fail etc. 🤦🏻‍♀️ I hate it when I get suckered into one of these.

Onthefloor2 · 31/01/2022 09:46

Not that this matters, but I’m free up in a poor background and never knew anyone to do this. When I met my partner, who was from a working class/middle uppper class background their family does it all the time- I was gobsmacked!
To be fair they do wash the clothes then hang them outside in the sun which gets rid of the laundry smell and returns them.
(They probably go back cleaner than when they bought them…but it’s not the point)

gelatodipistacchio · 31/01/2022 09:46

What a disgusting person. It shows a lot about KB's character that she thinks this is normal.
