It's okay to wear clothes then return them for a refund

Kay Burley on Sky News mentioned an article in one of the papers covering what happens to clothing purchased online and returned (not sure which retailer). Apparently they go to a big warehouse to be sorted and are given a 'sniff' test - to which KB said "c'mon, we've all done it"

AIBU to think that the majority of people don't order clothes, wear them, then return items in a smelly state for a refund? I have never done this unless the item has developed a fault after wearing it - and I've definitely never returned clothing smelling of sweat or anything else.

YABU - it's perfectly okay to wear something then return it for a refund, even if it's not faulty - it's one of life's perks.

YANBU - the majority of people don't do a KB!

@LoisLane66

No it is NOT OK. What I do is go to the store, find the item I've seen online and try it on in my size. I can see the real life colour, feel the material and see how it fits. Then I order it to be sent to my home. There is now no need to try at home and send back but if you're one of those despicable individuals who actually order to wear then send back...it says so much about your attitude, none of it good
I mean I don’t see any issue with someone ordering something, trying it on at home, then returning it if it isn’t right. I know you say there’s ‘no need’ but there is often a need. Some places don’t stock certain items in store, some people can’t access the store etc, which is why online shopping is so useful.

I don’t think it’s the same as wearing it and returning it, which I do think is wrong.

I used to own a clothes shop and it did happen but not too much. Wheb it was obvious, we gave people who did it a guilt trip and explained to them that we were a family with a young baby who were just trying our hardest to make a living. Everyday was a struggle and dishonest customers made it harder. I hope it made them think twice.

wentworthinmate · 01/02/2022 18:14

We are tempted to think 'poor' people do this but I'd bet my bottom dollar it's people with money that do this with designer stuff more that any 'group'.

karmakemmie · 01/02/2022 18:14

My friend's mum worked in M and S in the 90s and she said people would return soiled underwear in an attempt to get a refund! Proper dirty piss takers! Envy

Dragonella · 01/02/2022 18:15

I've never ever done it unless the article has developed a really bad fault like the seams coming apart... But I knew someone who's wife would buy a top quality dress for a special occasion then return it to the shop after the occasion.. So wrong on every level

mirabellemadrigal · 01/02/2022 18:17

I've done it once in my life. I was going to an important event. I panic bought a
Velvet jacket. Wore it over a dress. Returned it the next day. Knew i wouldn't wear
It again. It cost he £45 back in the mid 00a and I didn't earn much

The shop assistant was very suspicious and i was really embarrassed

Kay Burley is judging by her own standards. Sadly, she has paraded her own dishonesty.

Teatotal2 · 01/02/2022 18:23

I once ordered a fairly expensive branded coat on sale from a well known retailer that stocks many brands as well as there own, the coat I received was the same colour and length as one I had ordered but was a much cheaper item with the branded labels attached. I returned the item and was, thankfully, refunded but wondered if they ever caught up with whoever returned the cheap item in its place.

Booklover3 · 01/02/2022 18:24

I’ve never done that

phishy · 01/02/2022 18:25

🤦🏽‍♀️

How is sniffing your own clothes to see if they are ok to wear again dishonest?

Tulipomania · 01/02/2022 18:26

Not all of us live near enough to a store to try something on and then order it online. And anyway, if you liked it, why wouldn't you just buy it straight after you had tried it in the store.

I ordered 3 similar dresses this week for an upcoming event from an upmarket High Street store, tried them all on, I'm keeping one and returning two. Loads of people do that.

That's disgusting.

Teatotal2 · 01/02/2022 18:28

I read an article claiming some do this for Insta with designer wear too, they post pics of themselves wearing expensive items, then return them. Apparently it can increase likes & followers.

Polyputthekettleon · 01/02/2022 18:30

There was someone on mn a few weeks ago asking if it is okay to go return mooncup which had been shoved up them to the boots counter 🤣 . Do you really think such people will not wear clothes and return them for a refund. Also, someone I knew had one of their friends visiting from abroad. They needed a new mattress for the visitor and ordered one , had the friend sleep on it and when they left she returned the mattress. I don't know retailer details etc. I have also noticed in some clothing retailers I.e. river island and especially in Debenhams (before they closed), most of the sales assistants were wearing the retailers clothes. I've also heard a lot of youngsters (uni students) doing this.

MouseholeCat · 01/02/2022 18:30

I've only ever returned a worn item that was faulty. It's a really shitty thing to do otherwise. It's demeaning for workers to have to sniff garments, it's hugely wasteful and it's shitty from a sustainability perspective.

duvetdayforeveryone · 01/02/2022 18:31

That is so disgusting! I have never done this!

I do buy clothes from the charity shop, wear them, wash them, then donate them back (for free, I don't ask for a refund).

KavvLar · 01/02/2022 18:32

@FusionChefGeoff

See now this fits into my vision of what shopping will be in the not too distant future to combine all the benefits of online shopping (more choice, shop from your living room, all the sizes etc) with the bad bits removed (fucking about with returning everything.

You order all your stuff as normal - but for delivery to a 'shopping warehouse' type space. Possibly with only a small deposit to pay so you can order as many diff sizes / styles as you want.

Then you visit that when convenient, colllect your order and take it all to the beautifully designed changing rooms. Then you try everything on.

Then, everything you don't want goes to the returns area - easier for shops to repackage immediately and DEFINITELY no wearing of clothes!

You take what you want to keep to the tills and pay the balance.

I would absolutely 100% use this. Inspired.
Learningstill · 01/02/2022 18:32

Well that tells you the kind of person KB is.
It’s wrong to return clothes worn both morAlly and hygienically. Yuk.

Primrose1952 · 01/02/2022 18:33

No I would never do that but not at all surprised that KB would - awful women. Won't watch Sky when she is on!!

Bumpy23 · 01/02/2022 18:37

kB is not nice anyway, so I can imagine she'd be the part of society that thinks it's ok.
It's not, it's a shitty thing to do!!

welshbaby2009 · 01/02/2022 18:39

I would never do this. I think it’s so rude and cheeky.

cherish123 · 01/02/2022 18:48

Disgusting to do this. Very scummy.

OpheliaTrousersnake · 01/02/2022 18:49

Agree with those who say it's theft. My XH once suggested it, but he was financially abusive so that tells its own story.

Kshhuxnxk · 01/02/2022 19:01

Can honestly say I've never done this!

fussyhousewife · 01/02/2022 19:02

Dishonesty in the extreme. If you want to wear and return there are on line rental sites - you can hire designer clothing which is charged at a day rate and then you just return them.
