Do you think Spotify should continue to host Joe Rogan's podcast?

Quite a few singers (Neil Young, Joni Mitchell, Nils Lofgren to name a few) have said they want to have their music removed from Spotify as a protest against Spotify hosting Joe Rogan's podcast (they think he is spreading covid vaccine misinformation), so Spotify will have to choose between hosting their music or Joe Rogan's podcast.

I personally think this is ridiculous as Joe Rogan talks to a range of people about a range of different subjects and his podcasts are interesting and popular and people can always choose not to listen to them and even if they do, it doesn't mean they believe everything being said. I don't think Spotify should cave to such threats and I think this would set a dangerous precedent.

YANBU - Spotify should keep Joe Rogan's podcast.
YABU - Spotify should not keep Joe Rogan's podcast.

[quote Buwch]Anyone remember biden kamala and co saying they wouldn't have the vaccine as they wouldn't trust it?

That’s a bit of a misrepresentation...

It really isn't, and Snopes is about as honest as a politician at election time

Pumperthepumper · 30/01/2022 23:11

Fair enough, it's a pretty obvious point though tbh so you don't really need to keep making it. Anyway, it seems Spotify, as a private company, have decided to not host Neil Young's music so there you go.

I mean, you’d think so, but there are still being talking about the fall of society because of the lack of ‘free speech’ so maybe not.

Crikeyalmighty · 30/01/2022 23:11

I work in music. I don’t think it’s a deal Spotify should have done . I certainly think given the health situation that anyone spouting anti vax shouldn’t be Given the money and airtime to do so.

Lilifer · 30/01/2022 23:11

@Pumperthepumper thank you.

So if you don't see this Spotify issue as censorship then how do you define censorship?

I remember her comments well, and they’re easily looked up.

The Snopes page is accurate.

I define censorship as a world-wide blanket ban on opinion. Interestingly, Joe Rogan’s interview is still on Apple Podcasts and YouTube.

How do you define censorship?

So what anti Vax stuff was he spouting?
Lilifer · 30/01/2022 23:15

"Spouting anti vax" is a phrase I read a lot on here in the covid board and as quite a damning phrase it seems to be used as a weapon to dismiss any discussion/difference of opinion or otherwise towards the covid 19 vaccine.
It's lazy and indicates a lack of ability to engage in debate on any intellectually meaningful level.

I think it's quite disturbing that there's a mass campaign to get someone to lose his job based on a series of rumours rather than anything he's actually said, yes. Would you be ok with that?
Superfoodie123 · 30/01/2022 23:15

Of course they shouldn't remove him. He's given a voice to extremely qualified professionals with very valid arguments who have been shunned from mainstream media for not repeating as they are told. We need more people like Joe Rogan at this very scary time.

biden kamala and others all said they wouldn't take it, no good tying to gild the lily

That’s not what’s happening though - the interview is still on Apple Podcasts and YouTube. What’s happening is a private company deciding they can’t be arsed with the grief, as is their right. He can make his own hosting site with his own audience. It’ll just cost him a lot of money.

Are you talking about Spotify not wanting the crap of dealing with Neil Young? Anyway, you don't seem to be a fan of freedom of speech so I'm not sure there's much to be said really. You'd better just hope the mob never comes for you.
Empressofthemundane · 30/01/2022 23:28

According to the American Civil Liberties Union:

Censorship, the suppression of words, images, or ideas that are "offensive," happens whenever some people succeed in imposing their personal political or moral values on others.

According to Britannica censorship is:

the changing or the suppression or prohibition of speech or writing that is deemed subversive of the common good.

Seems like this is censorship. Only question is whether it is justified or not.

Regardless, they can do what they like. You don’t seem to understand what ‘freedom of speech’ means, despite it being pointed out to you so many times.

rubicscubicle · 30/01/2022 23:32

I don't listen to him.

Just once heard him sprout some nonsense about black people and coming from the darkest part of the world.

But here is what was reported a few weeks ago.

www.theguardian.com/technology/2022/jan/14/spotify-joe-rogan-podcast-open-letter

As for Trump, don't some of his cures for Covid, involved like.............bleach. 😂😂

Do you think Spotify should continue to host Joe Rogan's podcast?

Lilifer · 30/01/2022 23:33

@Pumperthepumper my understanding of censorship is not that far off from yours except that I would not say that it has to be world wide, for eg individual countries may practice censorship according to their own political systems. I would say though that attempting to pressurise Spotify to shut down discussions on vaccines amounts to asking them to censor those discussions and I think that is wrong. I am glad that Spotify seems to agree with me.

SuperWoofing · 30/01/2022 23:34

Ok, so you're happy for someone to be censored for something they've never said, you're happy for someone to be subjected to a campaign for them to lose their job based on rumours and lies. That seems to be it really. Like I said, just hope that the mob never comes for you.
Pumperthepumper · 30/01/2022 23:37

@SuperWoofing you’re looking a bit desperate for a fight here. I could just as easily say ‘you’re saying anyone can do absolutely anything and still keep their job, better hope some mad racist misogynist doesn’t come for you!’

Spotify don’t have to host anyone they don’t want to. Neither does mumsnet - this post would be deleted if I broke their talk guidelines. That’s because private companies can choose who they host.

Any links on this please? Have not heard this before. In fairness a lot of folk were wary of the vaccine at first because it emerged so soon in to the pandemic but if this is true it makes the pair of them look damn silly
LondonWolf · 30/01/2022 23:38

Biden, Harris et al said they wouldn't take it if it was recommended by Trump alone.

Isn't it a good thing that they were allowed to say this and discuss their reservations without being condemned for "anti vaxx" rhetoric and threatened with being removed from their jobs? Smile

Viviennemary · 30/01/2022 23:40

I wish spotify would just close down altogether. Cant see the point of it tbh.

AKASammyScrounge · 30/01/2022 23:43

There's far too much cancelling and censoring these days. And it's done by virtue signalling celebs or
pathetic pipsqueaks exercising anonymous power from behind a computer screen.

I, and most other people, don't need a pipsqueak or a pop star to direct our thinking and draw conclusions for us.
I also dislike the current trend for 'blackmailing' companies to obey random critics.
