AIBU To be fed up of smaller portions for women

Fed up of constantly being given the smaller fish, steak, piece of cake in resturants than my husband, I'm taller than him! I'm not on a sodding diet and nor do I need to be on one. Today I was even given a smaller fish than my 13 year old son! Its bad enough that gluten free fish at chippys tend to be smaller anyway for whatever reason, so this ended up being miniscule than everyone elses as my 13 year old son is also a coeliac.

@WaningMoon

The thing is OP, as a general rule men do need more calories than women. Nothing to do with having more physical jobs etc etc , it is basic biology- men are built differently to women, they have denser bones and bigger muscles- which means they need more calories. You being tall might mean you need more calories than a smaller woman, but it won’t be anywhere near the intake required for a man.
But is that for a random stranger serving in a restaurant to decide? Fuck no! They have zero idea of what else the customer eats so restaurants should serve a standard potion size regardless
Colderthanever · 29/01/2022 21:09

Every single restaurant I’ve ever been to I’ve only ever seen standardised portion sizes. I’ve never ever witnessed smaller sizes dor women, how odd that it happens to you so often.

PrincessPaws · 29/01/2022 21:10

But if they aren't prepare to do thus, are they happy to accept a smaller payment for the small thing portion?!

MintyIguana · 29/01/2022 21:11

If you are in South Africa they used to serve a thing called a "ladies' steak". It was a steak . But if you were a MAN you probably would not order it.

Socialcarenope · 29/01/2022 21:15

I've never known this in a restaurant before.

In a home type setting then yes, I think it's absolutely fair enough. Women, on average, need fewer calories than men. Even if a man and a woman are the same height and weight, unless the man is completely sedentary and the woman lifts weights, the man would need more calories.

And it's not penis portions - penis portions are men getting BETTER food, so the best cut of the meat, the best Yorkshire pudding etc not simply more.

PrincessPaws · 29/01/2022 21:18

Penis portions are more food, not better food, so 6 roast potatoes instead of 2...

Voice0fReason · 29/01/2022 21:22

I have never experienced this.
It doesn't even make any sense.

Yebbie · 29/01/2022 21:27

My mum is awful for this. Dad always gets a much bigger portion than she will serve herself. When dh and I go there she does the same to him, I have to make a point of asking for more as the amount my mum seems to class a woman's portion is nowhere near enough! She says the man should always get the bigger serving, and if both are the same size then they get the better presented one.

When I cook at home if one portion is bigger or looks nicer I give it to myself, it wouldn't even occur to me to give it to dh Grin

Yebbie · 29/01/2022 21:27

Must say though I haven't had this in a restaurant, ever

Pedalpushers · 29/01/2022 21:27

I am fed up of servers always assuming it's me who ordered the bottle of wine for 1. It's true, but it's rude of them to assume.

skippy67 · 29/01/2022 21:29

@Im2022

This is a lie. This just doesn’t happen.
Agreed.
Isgooglebroken · 29/01/2022 21:36

Many years ago I used to waitress in a hotel.

We had a hotel inspector and his wife stay. Yes they are usually anonymous but he had had trouble booking as they only took week long bookings in oak season & he only wanted 2 nights so he had to fess up that he wanted to inspect.

The owner cut a huge piece of apple pie and a normal sized piece and instructed me to give him the big one and joke about buttering him up -I was mortified!

That’s the only time I’ve ever seen a man given a bigger portion though.

Notanewusertool · 29/01/2022 21:39

I'm quite aware of inequality in everyday life, and I've never noticed this. If we order the same thing they tend to be the same size (even though I'm significantly shorter than my husband and do in fact eat less than him out of necessity)

Colderthanever · 29/01/2022 21:40

@hennaoj

It was a chippy with a restuarant, we were eating in. It tends to happen when having steak. I'm not inspecting plates but it can be really quite noticable! Of course it won't be the chef, they don't serve the food.
Are you seriously trying to suggest that wait staff sit out thr back taking food off your plate and give it to the males on your table? Seriously?

And steak is by weight, if you are not getting what’s ordered then complain.

Such an odd thing to happen to you op. And so regularly too.

EarringsandLipstick · 29/01/2022 21:43

Of course it won't be the chef, they don't serve the food.

Who is it then? The waiter is selecting smaller cuts of meat prepared for other tables to bring to you.

Absolute nonsense.

TheFairyCaravan · 29/01/2022 21:44

I wish I could order a smaller portion. I hate wasting food but I can never eat it all.

We’ve been to MIL’s today, she gave DH more than me but he’s a foot taller than me and 5 stone heavier so I can see why. When DDIL comes here she always watches how much I put on her plate and probably has about half of what DS2 has but she’s really petite. Saying that, she can’t half pack away a Chinese.

Shadedog · 29/01/2022 21:44

I’m tiny and greedy and I’ve never noticed this. DH and I have our steaks cooked differently so it would be a bit weird if the wait staff switched them so DH would get more. It would be a bit weird for the chef to have an order for two steaks and pick out noticeably different sizes when the customer is being charged the same.

QuitMoaning · 29/01/2022 21:45

In our chippy the fish are sold by weight range. If you order a gluten reduced portion, the batter is made up specially but the fish is exactly the same from the same tray in the same fridge as everyone else piece of fish.
Normally one person picks up the entire order so no staff would know who was having what meal.

Queensize · 29/01/2022 21:47

I hate restaurants presuming the steak/ribs/pie I've ordered is for dh. Happens all. The. Time.

hangrylady · 29/01/2022 21:48

What bollocks have I just read?

NatriumChloride · 29/01/2022 21:48

I’ve said YABU as this must be in your head. I’ve never experienced disparity in portion sizes at restaurants.

UrsulaBursula · 29/01/2022 21:50

Where do you live because I’ve never experienced this in ANY restaurant I’ve been to? Hmm

RobotValkyrie · 29/01/2022 21:50

I can't say that's ever happened to me. What does in fact tend to happen, is that through sheer luck, I order the largest, tastiest dish on the menu, and DH's dish is somewhat lacking.

UrsulaBursula · 29/01/2022 21:50

Unless you look visibly like a child
