AIBU To be fed up of smaller portions for women

Fed up of constantly being given the smaller fish, steak, piece of cake in resturants than my husband, I'm taller than him! I'm not on a sodding diet and nor do I need to be on one. Today I was even given a smaller fish than my 13 year old son! Its bad enough that gluten free fish at chippys tend to be smaller anyway for whatever reason, so this ended up being miniscule than everyone elses as my 13 year old son is also a coeliac.

But the people in the kitchen won’t know who each meal is for. Unless you think the waitress is telling the kitchen “two steaks, one bolognese, oh and one of the steaks is for a woman”

careerchangemaybe · 29/01/2022 19:50

There isn’t a special vagina button that tells the chef to make a small portion.

😂

WaningMoon · 29/01/2022 19:51

The thing is OP, as a general rule men do need more calories than women. Nothing to do with having more physical jobs etc etc , it is basic biology- men are built differently to women, they have denser bones and bigger muscles- which means they need more calories. You being tall might mean you need more calories than a smaller woman, but it won’t be anywhere near the intake required for a man.

AnneKipankitoo · 29/01/2022 19:51

I get served the bigger portion and more wine than my husband.
He gets very annoyed about this .

I knew someone would be along to say this. Like clockwork.
Porridgeislife · 29/01/2022 19:52

I thought this was the only person this happened to. I eat out quite a lot and if I’m dining with a male colleague/friend, I’m always given the visually smaller piece of fish or steak.

As I work in a mostly male industry I’m usually (and sadly) the only woman at the table, so it is noticeable when it happens over and over again.

PinkSyCo · 29/01/2022 19:53

I can’t say I’ve ever noticed this, although I was the only one who ordered dessert when out with DD and DSIL last week and the waiter came and plonked MY pud in front of SIL without even hesitating, so I think I will keep my eye out for this in future.

I don’t think restaurants are considering that. Do you think they give women bigger steaks because they need more iron than men?

Moonface123 · 29/01/2022 19:53

l think these threads are kind of clutching at straws now, this never ending victim mentality is beyond belief.

DreamerSeven · 29/01/2022 19:57

Never happened to me and even if it did, it wouldn’t bother me as my partner definitely has a bigger appetite than me - I honestly don’t know many couples where the woman eats the same/bigger portions than the man. Before I get jumped on by all those who disagree with me, this is in MY experience, I’m not saying it’s true for 100% of couples!

MsAgnesDiPesto · 29/01/2022 19:57

I’ve been eating out for nearly forty years and this has never happened to me. Can you name and shame, OP? I’m anxious to avoid wherever this is happening!

Lindy2 · 29/01/2022 20:02

Restaurant/cafe portions all seem the same size to me. When the server brings them out they generally ask who is having what dish so there's no way they dish up differently for males/females when they don't even know who is eating what.

At home I'll generally dish up a larger portion for DH, if there's any extra left, because he eats more than me.

Thefaceofboe · 29/01/2022 20:02

I think you’re paranoid

Mumzoo5070 · 29/01/2022 20:06

This used to happen to me when I was a nurse at a hospital canteen. I was dished up far smaller portions than the men next to me in the queue.

SpellitwithaY · 29/01/2022 20:06

I am a massive chilli fiend and love a vindaloo. Husband breaks out a sweat over a medium curry. Every single time (nearly) the vindaloo or similar get handed to my husband..... we just let them and sort it out after

But still annoying but only mildly....

bruffin · 29/01/2022 20:09

Definitely paranoid, DH is a foot taller than me and never seen him be given bigger portion in a restaurant

So there were two gluten free fish ordered, did the staff in the chippy personally hand you and your son a piece of fish in paper?

I worked as a waiter for quite a long time at various restaurants, portions are a standard size so the ingredients prepared all last for the same number of portions. If a restaurant did mens and womens portions, they wouldn’t be able to determine how many covers of that particular option was available.

Rodion · 29/01/2022 20:11

Never happened to me in a restaurant. I've had plenty of frustrated hungry moments as guests at someone's house though.

However, as I've got older I've noticed that whilst I may be a greedy guts who happily eats much more than my larger husband, I'm generally in the minority. Most women do seem to prefer less than men in terms of portion size, and it can be embarrassing to get given too much knowing you won't manage it.

I've tried hard to dish up equal portions to my guests because that's what I'd want but the women do generally ask for a smaller plateful. So it's a bit damned if you do, damned if you don't. Asking in advance or doing a help yourself meal is the best solution, but I don't think it would occur to most people because they haven't experienced it as a problem themselves.

EatSleepRantRepeat · 29/01/2022 20:14

@JurgensCakeBabyJesus

I quite like a beer in the summer and DH likes a G&T, most of the time he is given the beer if it's table service
I always get handed DHs salad and he gets my burger and chips. I just laugh now, but I used to feel a bit insulted tbh
notacooldad · 29/01/2022 20:17

How very odd.
I've never had this happen to me when with Dh.
I've never had it happen when I've been in a restaurant as a single female customer ( you know when you glance across to see what everyone else is having to eat)
Honestly Ive never felt short changed.

Cantleave · 29/01/2022 20:18

@NoSquirrels

Odd, because restaurants try to make standardised portions.
I was in a hotel with dh. He ordered fish and chips and when it arrived it was a really small piece of fish. When we had finished I saw a friend and went to speak to her. Her meal arrived and she had ordered fish and chips too and the fish was twice the size of the one dh had been given. This was a four star hotel and definitely not sex discrimination but definitely not standardised portions.
DisforDarkChocolate · 29/01/2022 20:20

I'm forever been handed the diet drink and the veggie food when they have been ordered by my husband. However, I've never been given a smaller portion when we've ordered the same main.

WhyYesYABU · 29/01/2022 20:20

This has never happened to me to my knowledge and I'm 7 inches shorter than my husband. I've even avoided the classic underfeeding MIL - she serves everything to the centre so we help ourselves. The only time I ever get smaller portions is at home, and that's my own doing!

EmpressCixi · 29/01/2022 20:20

I voted YABU because this is a dog whistle thread using imaginary sexist scenario that doesn’t exist.

Croissantly · 29/01/2022 20:21

I've never had this, although I can well imagine! I wish more places offered smaller portions though, some seem to bulk meals out with masses of chips etc that just get wasted. That's a good tip to ask though.
