People who go on local Facebook groups and post this sort of thing

OrangeIsTheNewRed · 29/01/2022 17:52

Does anyone else eyeroll at people who go on local social media groups and post things like:

'Anyone else spot the 11 police cars, ambulance and helicopter flying along x road just now? I hope it's nothing serious?!?!'

And

'I found a bank card outside the bank on the high street 4 days ago and I am keeping it safe. If you have lost one pm me and I will ask you questions to check if it's yours.'

And

'I'm sure that the parents of the teenagers in the chip shop will be really proud of the language their little darlings were using just now!'

Etc.

I know I could just leave the groups but they are useful for things like plasterer recommendations and checking when the tip is open and who is the best tree pruner in the area, etc.

It's not just be who finds this annoying, is it?

My local group is full of the same (complete with Power Trip Admins) but I will NEVER leave because of the gold that you sometimes stumble across. This one is very specific so if you're in the group you will recognise it, but my FAVOURITE post in a local group so far is as follows:

Someone posts asking how much you'd expect to pay for a gig at a pub. There were an unusually large number of comments so of course I clicked on it expecting drama, and wasn't disappointed. I scrolled until the found the comment that had about 50 replies underneath.

I kid you not, a post asking about the cost of a pub gig descended into a fight about a bicycle pump that involved name calling, accusations of theft, and screenshots of messages that had been sent over the span of A YEAR.

I was thoroughly entertained

Bumply · 29/01/2022 23:22

We've had to train people not to post photos of bank cards with half the details still showing. One obscured the expiry date but left everything else on view!

Then there's the "just found this lovely little dog in the park who seems to be lost" posts that happen roughly once a week and is known to all the regulars (of FB and the park) because its owners leave it to roam free and won't listen to reason no matter how many times they have to collect it from the local cat and dog home.

saraclara · 29/01/2022 23:23

@cobblers123

I peruse three local FB pages and they pretty much all have the same type of posts every. Bloody. Day!

Dog poo, dog being attacked by another dog, cats lost, cats found, local louts trying car doors captured on ring doorbells, anyone know the local Hermes driver? found bank cards, lost mobiles, is the tip open and do you still have to book? ...Hmm

I only go on to check if any traffic problems but it does get a bit addictive sometimes especially if there's arguments breaking out and the name calling starts. Grin

I keep thinking that people on this thread must live where I do. But your tip booking question seals it!
ILoveHuskies · 29/01/2022 23:26

Our local Facebook groups are full of absolute morons, nutters and power mad admin

they are hilarious

foofooyeah · 29/01/2022 23:35

@AudTheDeepMinded

Love ours. Someone at Christmas had had a card misdelivered to them. The intended recipient was called, and I kid you not, 'Mr Kneebone'. First response was 'I think they are connected to The Thighbones'. This still makes me start gurgle snorting when I remember it!
😄😄😄
CornflakeMum · 29/01/2022 23:38

On ours all the recommendations are always made by people who have the same surname as the person they’re recommending I.e. family members! And still people say ‘thanks hun I’ll give them a call!’

Motorina · 29/01/2022 23:40

I actually posted a pre-emptive cat post, with photo. "This is xxx. He has several comfy beds, a sofa of his own, and a ready supply of kibble. If he tells you he's hungry then he's lying. I don't mind if you feed him, but be aware you're being conned."

Got several, "I thought he was a stray..." replies.

mumda · 29/01/2022 23:44

No one asked questions about the armed police who turned up during lockdown. They surrounded a car and had people on the floor.
Mind you half the street were out watching.

PickAChew · 29/01/2022 23:45

@Littlecaf

Ours has a local bloke who posts what the traffic was like on his bus route (he’s a night bus driver).

I couldn’t work out what he was going on about for ages (years) as he posts in a half literate code

“1/5 shift
Calm by cross roads
Rain plus fog
Police busy on London Road
Chris on his perch”

WTF?

(I think Chris is an owl)

Scores of people thank him for his service and wish him a good days sleep.

I love it.

I love this sort of stuff. It has that gentle vibe about it. Someone wanting to share their small pleasures and observations.

I'm a nextdoor lead and we have zero tolerance, locally, for anyone who gives posters like this a hard time.

LonglegsMumtheBlacksmith · 29/01/2022 23:50

For a whole year the only thing anyone talked about was the ugly bollards introduced to our high street for social distancing. People were losing their minds over how ugly these things were. They even arranged protests in the village square. Anyone who mentioned that they were only temporary/ quite handy for social distancing/ actually with the addition of planting didn't look too bad was shot down in flames.
That and the young owner of the local butchers was raised to saintly status even though he was clearly making a killing selling expensive meat to everyone when the supermarkets didn't have much stock
I kind of miss the craziness that COVID brought to the group!

To be fair the ones placed in my local area and in the ones I travel through for work are still there...they were also only meant to be temporary. And I have no idea how two ugly Grin---- boxes placed on a few roads aided distancing. Distancing of what? They're in the middle of the road
2YearsOfWastedTime · 29/01/2022 23:55

I think you live near me !!!

uggmum · 29/01/2022 23:56

Ours is really entertaining
The usual lost cat that was then found in the house. Apparently it had been hiding.
Numerous bank cards and driving licenses.
Dog poo galore.
People offering spare food to people in need and you have to prove how needy you are.
Very argumentative posts with various threats of violence.

It's the gift that keeps on giving

@WheelieBinPrincess

OP do you live in a popular seaside town?
Haha I do this happens every day 😂😂
OakPine · 30/01/2022 00:04

Need a plasterer/decorator/electrician/car mechanic/etc...
Must be very cheap/free as I am a pensioner/disabled/tight fisted and looking for a freebie!

meganorks · 30/01/2022 00:04

That's what local Facebook groups are. Ours:
Who's letting off bloody fireworks
Look at this rubbish parking
Pick up your dog poo

No-one is reading that and going 'oh you know what, I had decided I didn't care about other people. But now someone has made a post on Facebook, actually I see the error of my ways. I will pick up my dogs poo!'

Whitefire · 30/01/2022 00:06

Get a lot of images from ring doorbells, with usual calls of "this area gets worse by the day". No, it has always happened, you just didn't know about it before. which was probably better

Tormundsbeard · 30/01/2022 00:06

TOP 5
Missing/found pets
Poo - dog and horse
Parking
Whose sheep are…
Complaints about fireworks, parties, bonfires depending on the time of year

OakPine · 30/01/2022 00:07

"Has anyone just seen a helicopter go over?"

Yes, ffs, this is a large city with several heli-pads within spitting distance. Are you actually in the 18th century and have not seen a helicopter before?

starfishmummy · 30/01/2022 00:19

People were putting boxes of unwanted tat items out during lockdowns - books, kids toys etc. But apparently others were coming along and instead of doing a swap were taking things without leaving something or taking too many books. And OMG someone even took the empty cardboard box!!

I posted that there was a box of books outside my house and please take as many as you like - the whole boxful if required. I was told this was not in the spirit of the book swap libraries that the others were doing.

Ricekrispiebun · 30/01/2022 00:41

Hmm I know what you mean. Personally the only thing that really annoyed me when I used Facebook were people who posted cryptic statuses and when someone asked if they were ok, they never even responded and said 'Nothing'.

RuralRita · 30/01/2022 00:42

My friends and I have a WhatsApp group where we share some of the funniest posts from our local Facebook page -

Here are my top 3

1 - the car that was parked outside an old lady's house for 3 mornings in a row. That had many many comments about all the different crimes they could be up to. Turns out it was a Care Worker popping round to make the old lady breakfast.

2 - Dead/disappearing swans. This is one of our favourite topics on our Spotted. The general belief is that the white van men, who are often "casing out" our village, steal them and eat them. That's, apparently, what men from [insert non British country] do!!

3 - Any trouble in the village and a lady will come on and say her husband will sort it out as he comes from [insert non British country] where men know how to protect their womenfolk!!

I just love it. I just love the drama Mick.

nitsandwormsdodger · 30/01/2022 00:46

Ok I have embarrassed myself in two of my local groups because I got into a big row with someone over something I was at the time ( height of first lockdown and I’d just had a baby in my defence)

Mortified beyond belief when I found out there were 20 thousand people on the site ( I imagined a couple of hundred) and my sons teacher asked me if I was ok on Monday .. yes I still believe I was right and still feel v passionate about it but oh boy have I been silent since

Mrstwiddle · 30/01/2022 00:46

Most of these posts are found on a daily basis on my local Canadian town group, so they’re not uniquely British, people worldwide ask stupid questions. The lost cat ones drive me insane. And the amount of virtue signalling that goes on :(
