People who go on local Facebook groups and post this sort of thing

272 replies

OrangeIsTheNewRed · 29/01/2022 17:52

Does anyone else eyeroll at people who go on local social media groups and post things like:

'Anyone else spot the 11 police cars, ambulance and helicopter flying along x road just now? I hope it's nothing serious?!?!'

And

'I found a bank card outside the bank on the high street 4 days ago and I am keeping it safe. If you have lost one pm me and I will ask you questions to check if it's yours.'

And

'I'm sure that the parents of the teenagers in the chip shop will be really proud of the language their little darlings were using just now!'

Etc.

I know I could just leave the groups but they are useful for things like plasterer recommendations and checking when the tip is open and who is the best tree pruner in the area, etc.

It's not just be who finds this annoying, is it?

@Nyfluff

Definitely didn’t want a different size or font. ‘We got 73, we wanted 37.’

CannelloniMacaroni · 30/01/2022 10:25

There is a beautiful red con artist cat in our local area, if you search for his name in the fb group there are like a hundred photos of him. People constantly asking whose cat it is because he seems so very sad and is starving. And people always replying ’That’s Arthur. He lives on xx road.’ 😂

HunkyPunk · 30/01/2022 10:28

Am imagining the feline version of Clifford! Grin

CannelloniMacaroni · 30/01/2022 10:32

@HunkyPunk 😂 Someone should paint him in Clifford’s colour so everyone knows it’s just Arthur the con artist cat.

Thanks to this thread I have now re-downloaded the NextDoor app, it's really grown since I last logged in!

I've just seen a post from a woman complaining about cleaners she's found through the app letting her down by not turning up last minute.

She's threatening to 'name and shame' and apparently the police are 'very interested' 😂😂😂

These are making me laugh. This could be any one of about 6 Town pages where I live. 1 page was set up and when it grew to about 15k the admin started stopping posts, limiting things etc. So someone else started a page with an s added to the other page title, he started doing the same and someone else started another page with "but better" to the original page titles... they're working to be tory(run by a town counciller who is very far up his own arse), nothing and Labour. Several manchild fights over posts and a few racist but "not racist" posts. And a lot about traffic, poo, teenagers, cats, car parking and road closures....🤦🏾‍♀️

@OrangeIsTheNewRed
For anyone who is homesick like myself ( I relocated 70 miles from previous residence, due to a break up) the Facebook groups for local areas are a way to check in, also I'm new to facebook, so it's another experience. I don't want to be too nostalgic about my old residence, but I felt settled there and made friends, so check the local group out weekly.

Can anyone recommend a hairdresser or nursery

Followed by 100s of comments recommending every single relevant business in the town: all of them amazing

It's modern day equivalent of yellow pages

Love local Facebook pages. The random mix of mundane, gossipy, extremely personal and actually useful. And lots of freebies.

A regular one around here is along the lines of 'my child is sick and I'm out of calpol. I'm home alone/shops are closed for the night. Does anyone have any?'. Followed by lovely neighbours dropping some over.

SerenTarot · 30/01/2022 12:53

@AllYouCanEatBrestaurant

Maybe I'm a bitch but if I find a random bank card I take it home, cut it up and put it in the bin. I'd rather it was destroyed for them...
What even if you found it right outside a bank that was open?

Why?

ellielovesem · 30/01/2022 13:10

I found a bank card one time, messaged the owner through Facebook messenger to tell her I’d cut it up (presuming it had been cancelled and no branch for that bank in town). Turned out her house had been burgled and I ended up giving a police statement about where I’d found it! No good deed and all that…

We currently have a cat one going on, it’s hanging around a local shop and has allegedly got a tick. Owner has now posted to say it’s an old injury and to leave it be but the hysteria continues into a second day.

I do a tally and choose the one that's been recommended the most 😂
onedayoranother · 30/01/2022 19:56

Funnily enough my son did locate his lost bank card via FB - a friend saw the post and texted me and I sent my son the number. The guy had destroyed it by then (the bank didn't have a branch in the town where the guy found it).
But agree pointless posts generally.

XenoBitch · 30/01/2022 20:01

I love it when someone makes a post about a person who is being very antisocial, and they are so specific in their description that family of the accused come on and defend them... and it turns out the accused was actually being a twat, and the police are now involved.

In this instance, it was a chap on a mobility scooter who was keying every single car he went past. His family said it was not him, despite people posting photos and videos of him caught in the act.

Cherrysoup · 30/01/2022 20:08

I recently joined ours to find a dogwalker (she’s dbs checked, fully insured, brilliant!) but the random posts make me die! Why are so many black cats disappearing was today’s question. Do we have a cat serial killer? 🐱🤪 Dog poo is a very popular topic.

Blah1881 · 30/01/2022 20:16

To be fair i posted on a Facebook group for the first and only time recently because there was a strange cat in my garden. The local grapevine kicked off and there followed a very emotional reunion with the owner who had lost the cat several months ago. I do live some way outside the village though.

BiscuitLover3678 · 30/01/2022 20:42

The person who jumps in really goady.

Old lady: I have loads of old Amazon boxes would anyone like them?
Goady person: you shouldn’t stop at Amazon you are a terrible person you should get everything from the weekly local market.
Stranger: what if she uses it to buy medical supplies?
Goady person: the market sells everything even medical supplies if you look hard enough. I drive there every month in my Mercedes’ and find everything I could ever need.

BrightYellowDaffodil · 31/01/2022 10:44

Oooh!

Yesterday I found a bank card in the road when getting out of my car. Our area can be a little bit...interesting, so I picked it up and, as I was on my way into town anyway, walked past the issuing bank meaning to put it through the letterbox. No letterbox, so I took it home, cut it up and put it in the bin because I won't be back in town for some time.

Have I done this wrong as presumably I should have posted all over social media, including a picture of the card with its full account details for all to see, so that Mr Higginson (not his real name) could get his card back that a smackhead may already have rinsed dry?

Doubleraspberry · 31/01/2022 10:47

Here is a useful run down of what is best to do when finding a lost card.

www.creditcards.com/credit-card-news/what-to-do-find-lost-credit-card/

Taking it home and putting it on Facebook is NOT recommended.

BrightYellowDaffodil · 31/01/2022 11:14

That's pretty much what I did - couldn't contact the issuer to return it so I cut it up so that if it was, say, dropped by the bin men and someone found it, it couldn't be used. Having had my account rinsed by a fraudster before, I don't want someone else to have that stress!

GrandTheftWalrus · 31/01/2022 13:17

On my local page someone posted a lost parrot but it was like a Where's wally!

One that caused great hilarity was a monkey wandering about the local train station.

Doggymama123 · 31/01/2022 13:26

@Lactarius

There was a query about police and ambulances on my street the day I found my son's body. I replied to say why they were there following which the thread was quickly deleted.

The query didn't upset me (how could my day have got worse?) and I ended up making a new thread explaining the situation as it was easier to have everyone know at once rather than having to answer questions/quash rumours etc. later on.

Generally my local one is quiet but the one for my parents' village makes the place appear to be a septic quagmire of dog mess which can't be seen for all the bonfire smoke, whilst feral children on bikes set off fireworks in order to enquire as whether or not the chip van is at The Woolpack tonight.

I'm so sorry for your loss Sad totally heartbreaking

I do feel tho with those posts- people don't actually "hope everyone is ok" they are just nosy neighbours who wanna know what's going on.

It's no one's business- and it's rude when people want a bit of gossip and some poor family are going through the worst moments of their lives.

These are the posts I hate the most on the community pages.
