People who go on local Facebook groups and post this sort of thing

OrangeIsTheNewRed · 29/01/2022 17:52

Does anyone else eyeroll at people who go on local social media groups and post things like:

'Anyone else spot the 11 police cars, ambulance and helicopter flying along x road just now? I hope it's nothing serious?!?!'

And

'I found a bank card outside the bank on the high street 4 days ago and I am keeping it safe. If you have lost one pm me and I will ask you questions to check if it's yours.'

And

'I'm sure that the parents of the teenagers in the chip shop will be really proud of the language their little darlings were using just now!'

Etc.

I know I could just leave the groups but they are useful for things like plasterer recommendations and checking when the tip is open and who is the best tree pruner in the area, etc.

It's not just be who finds this annoying, is it?

Fireworks
Dog poo

Dogs practically on life support thanks to fireworks - most prolific of all of a group of the fur baby parents get going together -‘My poor little Melvin was literally shaking with fear for 6 months, and that was after I got him back from his calming retreat’ - ‘Yes they should be banned/silent, once a Catherine wheel went off the other side of the village and the DC had left home by the time our poor little PouffeBlanc came out from behind the sofa’

Edenspirits · 29/01/2022 20:27

@WheelieBinPrincess I know which Facebook community group you are talking about 😂

DinaDirvla · 29/01/2022 20:29

I stayed on my old home town's one because it reminds me of my late DM - and that lot are gloriously sarcastic and constantly troll one another. My favourite was the scooter wars. Someone parked a scooter perfectly reasonably and legally but there was a post about selfish the rider was for some reason - for weeks there were multiple photoshopped posts of a scooter parked in more and more bizarre positions.

Our local one now is mostly about how noisy the motorcyclists are (we're on a popular rural motorcycle route), "Why are Hermes so shit" and "who are the parents of the little bastards who told me to fuck off earlier" . No-one is admitting to that one Clive.

I'm dying to ask why every single driver out here is a lunatic but I might get my arse handed to me, so I'll resist.

@relocating24

For the bank card one, for those asking, the issue is that it assumes the person will A) be on Facebook, B) be on that specific Facebook group, and C) will check it regularly enough to see the post. Highly unlikely. Just hand it in to the bank, the Police (for other valuable lost property especially), or last resort if you can't would be to destroy it. THEN you could post on Facebook that that's where it is, in case they see it - but no harm it they don't.
Not only that but without putting a name in the post it means nobody can sign post the owner to it if they see the post and know the owner.

"I found a card 4 days ago outside the bank, message me if you think it might be yours" is going to reunite far fewer lost cards than "I found a Barclays debit card outside the bank on Monday, it has the name John Smith on the front, contact me if it is yours or if you know John please let him know I have his card and tell him to get in touch".

We get a lot of lost card posts on our local FB group but everyone just puts the name in the post and then the comments are then full of people tagging the John Smith they know or putting things like "Sarah Smith, is this your John's card?" or "Hi, I'm Sarah Smith and this is my huband/son/uncle/nephew's card - I'll message him now and let him know it has been found, thanks hun! Xxx"

BikiniB0tt0m · 29/01/2022 20:31

Literally every local facebook town gossip page will be the same in the UK at least 😂 this was describing exactly mine

BikiniB0tt0m · 29/01/2022 20:31

Talking about what the weather is going to be like and numerous pictures if there has been a storm

SouthOfFrance · 29/01/2022 20:33

Love this thread, so many annoying posts on FB groups.

I'd like to add, if I may, the ones that say "Does anyone know of any local food banks accepting donations?" You know, you could just stick your donations in the baskets at the checkouts of any of the main supermarkets but no, you want some kind of public acclaim & recognition for donating your tin of beans.

Also along the same lines are ones that ask if any women's refuges want their old foodstained old baby clothes lovingly shoved into a bin bag.

DobbyTheHouseElk · 29/01/2022 20:40

@RozHuntleysStump

Irony is not dead…

Anyway. My Nextdoor thing seems to be constant posts about “ Hi I’m Sue and I’ve lived in Acacia Road for 500 years. I trim toenails if anyone needs theirs doing. Lol!” Or “ hi I’m geoff’. Do some people think it’s some sort of meeting/chat/dating site?

That’s exactly how it is.

Hi I’m Julie, I’m 56 and I live with my hubby Dave. We’ve lived here in boring town for 20 years. Great to on here meeting the neighbours lols.

🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 29/01/2022 20:45

We been seeing birds in our garden - just wondered if anybody else is?

Edenspirits · 29/01/2022 20:50

On our group (in a popular southern seaside town) we get lots of ‘anyone got any kombucha mushrooms/ saurkraut/ sourdough starters’ or ‘I’m an energy healer’ or ‘who set off those fucking fireworks’ 😂

HunkyPunk · 29/01/2022 20:51

Haha! I literally just had a Nextdoor notification which begins -
“Recycling. I’m still uncertain about some things despite previous posts. Can anyone help?” Grin

PeopleBeCrazy · 29/01/2022 20:52

Absolutely agree! And if you lose your bank card even if you get it back then the sensible thing to do is cancel it anyway! Boggles my mind.

My heart sank last week when I realised I'd lost my mobile. Not because I thought it was gone but because I had visions of it not being where I knew I must have dropped it (literally went into one shop) but because I had the idea that instead of handing it in it was going to be posted on a local group of which there are hundreds (I'm in a large city) and I may not see it as I don't check them frequently (only use FB for business reasons). For the first time i was pleased to have been wrong! Some lovely lady had picked it up and handed it into security Smile

I appreciate people are trying to help and if my phone was in the middle of a car park fair enough. But we have umpteen number of posts where it's exactly that situation and people take it home to post.

MrsJamin · 29/01/2022 20:57

YANBU The most annoying ones on these though are "be careful of a scam where you get texted this...". It's a group for sharing local information. How would this be local information?! Hmm

Peoniesandpeaches · 29/01/2022 21:03

We get loads of people reposting bigoted ‘jokes’ thinking they are comedians or a million crap photos of unremarkable sunrises from people boasting about their early morning walks (often with an anti littering caption).

DickMabutt73962 · 29/01/2022 21:10

Can we also add the multiple posts for 'can anyone recommend a fabulous amazing super-qualified perfect flawless AFFORDABLE tradesperson' basically wanting something done for cheap.

I don't get why it's expected that people should charge cheaply for their skill and labour, you don't get underpaid in your professional career

AhCheeses · 29/01/2022 21:21

We're a military family so I collect local fb groups like Pokemon cards!
I can't leave them!

I've just joined a group for the next town we'll be moving to so I can see how bonkers the locals are before we get there 🥴

My favourite thing to do when someone asks searchable questions like 'what time is Tesco open til today?' is to share the link to Let Me Google That For You ...

lmgtfy.app/?q=what+time+does+tesco+open+today&iie=1
😁

GoldenOmber · 29/01/2022 21:27

@TwoLeftSocksWithHoles

We been seeing birds in our garden - just wondered if anybody else is?
That bird looks lost. You trap it in a shed, I'll run down to the vets and ask if they can scan it for a microchip.
Staffy1 · 29/01/2022 21:30

None of those would annoy me, I find them interesting apart from thank card one which is just stupid as I presume anyone would have cancelled their card by that stage.

DickMabutt73962 · 29/01/2022 21:31

@nordica

Mine is mostly people asking for recommendations for a plumber/painter/nail bar, as cheap as possible. "Need man and van for tomoz plz no more than £10"

And people who've just joined and post "thanks for the add" 😏

Oh I just posted about this 😂
Sunshine1235 · 29/01/2022 21:32

We have a field of horses near our village, it floods a bit when it rains. Without fail the locals start posting ‘does anyone know who owns the horses, the field is looking very wet, feel quite concerned etc.’ And the poor women who owns them has to pop up again and explain the horses are regularly checked and she’s monitoring the weather situation but it’s actually not that easy to just move horses somewhere else every time it rains.

Also people constantly posting asking to be in touch with the local Hermes man and his wife basically acting as his PA updating them on when they might expect their parcels

HadaVerde · 29/01/2022 21:32

Local groups can be hilarious.

The easily Google-able questions I can’t get bothered by. Some people are just looking for interaction and there’s nothing wrong with that.

Staffy1 · 29/01/2022 21:33

the bank card

cobblers123 · 29/01/2022 21:37

I peruse three local FB pages and they pretty much all have the same type of posts every. Bloody. Day!

Dog poo, dog being attacked by another dog, cats lost, cats found, local louts trying car doors captured on ring doorbells, anyone know the local Hermes driver? found bank cards, lost mobiles, is the tip open and do you still have to book? ...Hmm

I only go on to check if any traffic problems but it does get a bit addictive sometimes especially if there's arguments breaking out and the name calling starts. Grin

Somuddled · 29/01/2022 21:39

I recently joined nextdoorand it is all rubbish like this. We have a huge police station near us so we see cars a lot. Still we get the 'just saw a police car on x road, anyone know what is happening?' Argh, mind your own funking business! The only thing happening is police doing their jobs.

Also endless photos of dog shit. Avon selling is getting annoying too.

Kona84 · 29/01/2022 21:39

The bank one really annoys me, most people who lose a card will cancel it before fraud can’t take place.
There is actually a number on the back of the card you can call and say I’ve found a bank card and the bank will then contact the customer and send a new card.
By holding on to someone’s bank card you are leaving yourself open to been accused of fraud if the person then has funds removed or disputes spends on their account.
Just hand it back, phone the number or cut it up and bin it.

I will add one to this list

Those who find a driving license and the address is local and they still post okies Facebook rather than just going to the address

Or the ones who find a wallet in Asda want to get it back to the owner do post on social media rather than hand it in to Asda as it is more than likely the person will retrace their steps to find wallet

People who do things like this are glory hunters
