Is it illegal to kill a wild animal at work?

SilverDoe · 27/01/2022 09:57

Posting for traffic. Is illegal/possible to pursue for animal cruelty if someone kills a wild animal in their work place?

I have been googling but I can only find information really regarding livestock and pets.

OP posts:
Inspectorslack · 27/01/2022 16:38

There is no actual evidence at this point that he has killed a bird.

HangingOver · 27/01/2022 16:41

I must be a shit vegan for finding this thread so funny. Some of these comments are absolutely batshit.

ChickenGotLegs · 27/01/2022 16:42

I think it's pretty obvious he killed the bird ffs.

Would you all still be saying the same if it was a stray dog or cat?

He's obviously just a callous bastard and deserves all he gets.

Lady089 · 27/01/2022 16:42

@Mamamia7962

OP if the magpie kept going into his shop then I'm sure he is legally allowed to kill it as it is being a nuisance. Adults and children encouraging it to be friendly didn't do it any favours. It's a wild bird.

Magpies are predators and take baby birds and eggs out of smaller birds' nests to eat.

Are you suggesting the magpie deserves it because it’s a predator that eats to survive? Hmm
NoVaxDjokovic · 27/01/2022 16:44

I heard Kelly killed the magpie. That’s what I heard a woman in the shop was shouting at the staff about. And they said “oh yeah”. So it must be true.

Fucking Kelly. I’m gonna complain about her.

Inastatus · 27/01/2022 16:46

@SilverDoe - there are some heartless fuckers on this thread. You sound lovely and caring and I’m sorry about the poor little magpie. Every creature’s life is worth something.

starsaligned · 27/01/2022 17:00

@Inspectorslack there is no evidence but there is reasonable suspicion so do you not think this should be looked into at least? Given that a defenceless creature MAY have been horribly killed?

warmeduppizza · 27/01/2022 17:08

I worked in a historic NT property with super high ceilings where a pigeon had got itself locked in. After many days of crapping everywhere and many fruitless attempts at catching and releasing it, it got shot. It was sad but unavoidable and no one ended up with a criminal record.

XenoBitch · 27/01/2022 17:08

This thread is weird. OP is a Miss Marple wannabee by the sounds of it.

I used to work in a kid's hospital. A baby seagull landed in the play centre garden and rendered it unusable.. due to adult gulls dive bombing and shitting on anyone outside that would go near the baby. Hotel Services manager called pest control and they were due to come shoot the baby gull. People that didn't agree with this course of action put notes on the play centre door, saying he was "murdering" this bird etc. It got nasty. In the end, some porters went in and put the baby gull in a box, and dropped it in a local park.

I love the “cracked” insult to everyone who disagrees with the op. Not.

starsaligned · 27/01/2022 17:24

@Inspectorslack I love the fact that you keep ignoring relevant, sensible questions and continue trying to insult the op. Always great to see mindless cyber bullying from grown women.

slashlover · 27/01/2022 17:28

It says something when posters are more concerned about ‘evidence’, than acknowledging the fact this cruel fucker has killed a defenceless bird.

But how is it a fact without evidence? I've said before that when I worked for the Co-op, I was accused of all sorts by customers either making a mistake or just making stuff up.

I'm pretty sure vegan's aren't allowed to say 'batshit' Wink

No, you've got your wires crossed there. They aren't allowed to eat batshit.

Please tell me how I have insulted the op? I disagree with her interpretation of the definition of evidence.

I’m not a fan of magpies in shops. I don’t want any bird shitting all over my food thanks.

I haven’t called her “cracked”

I hope the bird was put down humanely by a professional. Which from the information you have given could well be the case: the manager would have been the one to call them.“

Which information given shows the bird may well have been put down humanely by a professional? I missed that part of the thread.

Given the nature of the magpie, it was a shame a wild life sanctuary wasn’t called instead as apparently there may be one nearby.

derxa · 27/01/2022 17:51

At our Coop the workers are too busy to engage in loud conversations. We're still in a pandemic. Customers are in and out as fast as possible. No sign of any wildlife.

Triphazards · 27/01/2022 18:11

The RSPB or RSPCA will tell you what, if anything, can be done.

starsaligned · 27/01/2022 18:12

@Inspectorslack it's clear that you don't agree but repeatedly coming back to have a pop even when she's said she's leaving the thread while ignoring genuine questions from others just makes you look like you're getting at her for the sake of it.

I also don't like birds in shops however I'm sensible enough to realise that they don't exactly have any concept of wrongdoing and therefore don't deserve to be killed inhumanely, if that is what happened.

The op has hardly launched the mass attack others are suggesting. She's emailed the company and posted on an anonymous forum. It absolutely should be looked into so any actual evidence can be established. If the manager has done nothing wrong he'll have nothing to worry about will he.

Oh FFS, there’s always one on every bloody thread - the obligatory reminder that we are still ‘IN A PANDEMIC’ 🤣
derxa · 27/01/2022 18:19

Oh FFS, there’s always one on every bloody thread - the obligatory reminder that we are still ‘IN A PANDEMIC’ 🤣 I'm in the Socialist Republic of Scotland where masks are mandatory. Nicola demands that I stumble around shops wearing steamed up glasses. If a magpie popped into the shop, I'd probably step on it because I can't see a bloody thing.

Whydoesthecatalwaysdothat · 27/01/2022 18:26

Oh no, how awful. I'm not surprised you're upset.

Wild birds are protected under the The Wildlife & Countryside Act 1981 in the UK and it is against the law to intentionally kill one.

You can report it to the RSPB via the online form at the bottom of this page:-

www.rspb.org.uk/birds-and-wildlife/advice/wildlife-and-the-law/wildlife-and-countryside-act/

You can also report it to the Police.

Might be worth seeing if you can get any more evidence to back it up.

I would absolutely report him. Until people are pulled up on shit like this they will continue to do whatever they please. It's awful.

The farm shop down the road from us has a resident robin. He sits up in the rafters and sings his head off! The staff say he is a nuisance but he absolutely makes my day whenever I see him so I totally get where you are coming from!

Inastatus · 27/01/2022 18:27

@derxa 😅😂

DrFoxtrot · 27/01/2022 18:28

I think it needs reporting somewhere, there was a case local to me where a McDonalds employee killed a seagull hanging around the bins and he was prosecuted. Maybe speak to the RSPCA for advice.

I've skim read OPs posts and gather there is tension on the thread and questions re hamsters. But sticking to the OP, I agree seek further advice from a body like the RSPCA or council.
