Media 'hysteria bad' ; jingoism and trite media phrases such as 'Freedom Day' OK?

merrymouse · 27/01/2022 16:57

So what? The point is that he was disobeying the rules for which he held responsibility. So why have you been working so hard trying to minimise every single instance when he has done that?

It’s a bit like my neighbour telling me our fence has blown down, and me telling them that I only have joint ownership. They don’t care.

22itsallnew · 27/01/2022 16:59

This is reflected in public opinion IPSOS Mori data shows seven in ten Britons say they are unhappy with the job he is doing as Prime Minister.

DePfeffoff · 27/01/2022 17:01

Errors were made, lines were crossed but I'd rather their errors of judgement were over having a bit of birthday cake than say, not getting vaccines rolled out swiftly or not having freedom day in July

You really are determined to close your eyes to reality, aren't you, @JaniieJones? It was several errors of judgment over breaking a law promulgated by his own government, and an important law aimed at public safety at that. As a matter of law, the excuse "Look at all the other wonderful things I have done" simply doesn't wash.

And shall we have a think about the rest of the "errors"? Paterson, flat refurbishment, lying to the Queen, unlawful procurement contracts, care home deaths, those utterly shameful Covid death figures, PPE failures, etc etc etc.

Celia66 · 27/01/2022 17:04

I don't want to see Carrie Johnson come out of this unscathed if she also broke rules. There are rumours that both Nimco Ali and Carrie's mother spent Xmas with them in 2020. One would have been ok as a childcare bubble (they said it was Nimco Ali) but not both. I'm in London and was not able to see any of my family. Also why was she in the Cabinet Room. It's not her place of work. And did a party between Carrie and her friends take place in the Downing Street flat on the night Cummings left.

I'd also like to understand how many of Carrie's friends have been appointed as Special Advisors, and what the recruitment processes were.

Roussette · 27/01/2022 17:07

Exactly Celia
Also why was she in the Cabinet Room. It's not her place of work

It's what I've been mithering on about on here.
I find it bizarre that a wife and decorator can be in the Cabinet Room.

merrymouse · 27/01/2022 17:07

errors of judgement were over having a bit of birthday cake

It wasn’t an error of judgement over birthday cake, it was a complete lack of understanding of the most restrictive rules ever made in peacetime.

not getting vaccines rolled out swiftly

Other countries soon achieved better coverage.

the80sweregreat · 27/01/2022 17:11

The 'recruitment criteria ' for number 10 ' special advisors '
..
' do you know Carrie Johnson?'
' yes, we go way back '
' when can you start ?'
I did read that Boris Johnson was told to recruit Allegra Stratton because otherwise the current wife wouldn't be too impressed if he didn't
That went well.

DuncinToffee · 27/01/2022 17:13

Another error of judgement?

www.businessinsider.com/johnson-was-organising-ex-pms-banquet-two-days-before-kabul-fell-2022-1?r=US&IR=T

NEW: Boris Johnson was organising Sept. bash at Chequers for ex-PMs on Friday 13/8 two days before Kabul fell, as evacuation efforts began amid deteriorating security situation.
Records show PM met Chequers Trust re. "preparations for centenary dinner"

Or is it "at least he wasn't on the beach"

Cornettoninja · 27/01/2022 17:13

@JaniieJones

'It is perfectly clear that there was a whole series of parties that broke the law at 10 Downing Street, some of which were attended by the Prime Minister, Chancellor and other Ministers.By not insisting that Boris resigns the rest of his cabinet and lesser extent MPs are complicit.'

Oh well, that's that then. Best let Gray know?

'I am at a complete loss to understand how anyone can defend Boris Johnson for what went on in Downing St.'

Errors were made, lines were crossed but I'd rather their errors of judgement were over having a bit of birthday cake than say, not getting vaccines rolled out swiftly or not having freedom day in July.

They got the big things right. Refreshments at work should have been stricter to prevent this hysteria if nothing else.

Errors. Errorss. In fact pretty much the same one over and over. Alongside a long, long list of other.

The shine of the vaccine rollout is over, vaccines would have happened whoever was in charge.

I rather think that Boris has already used up the goodwill of people prepared to widen their boundaries of acceptability because it’s been a particularly shit time globally on various other ‘errors of judgement’.

Florianus · 27/01/2022 17:14

lets deflect the blame onto the junior staff again

If the BBC is correct, it would be the opposite of what you claim !!!

Cornettoninja · 27/01/2022 17:16

I don't want to see Carrie Johnson come out of this unscathed

I mean she has had to hump that at least twice but yes, ikwym and agree.

This speculates that junior members of staff may be concerned, but doesn’t suggest that this has delayed release of the report. It’s a minor part of the article.

longwayoff · 27/01/2022 17:23

But will she keep the bloody sofas? I bet she'll fight to the death to take them with her "Mine, oiks. Do you know how much they cost?". Yes, Carrie, we all do.

Who knows? As you correctly say, it is speculation.
the80sweregreat · 27/01/2022 17:26

Still , none if this has stopped him getting out the high vis today. Makes him think he is ' magic mike ' .
I was eating my tea but been put off now hearing the word ' hump' and Boris in the same sentence 🤮

Cornettoninja · 27/01/2022 17:31

@the80sweregreat sorry about that, the visual isn’t great is it? Grin

SueSaid · 27/01/2022 17:35
@JaniieJones Did you do homeschooling while working during the lockdowns?

Did you miss out on seeing isolated family members?

Did you miss out on meeting a newborn?

Did you miss out on paying your respects in person at a funeral?

Because this is what the public were doing while No 10 held boozy dos. Stop trivialising what people have been through.
Yes all of the above. I'm not trivialising anything.

People also went to work, where they had refreshments...

Again, if true the 1am party would seem a step too far surely whichever staff were there will face consequences. The other listed 'events' seem reasonable.

borntobequiet · 27/01/2022 17:40

Yes all of the above. I'm not trivialising anything.

People also went to work, where they had refreshments...

The second sentence there is a good example of trivialisation.

You are sounding more like Johnson by the day!

Careful. My post that said that was deleted.
Roussette · 27/01/2022 17:44

The other listed 'events' seem reasonable

Why when work drinks weren't allowed?

Notonthestairs · 27/01/2022 17:46

And the PM's PPS inviting 100 people (from multiple departments and the PM's wife) to a BYOB party?

It's trivialising law breaking and the corresponding cover up and misleading of Parliament.

merrymouse · 27/01/2022 17:53

Who knows? As you correctly say, it is speculation.

I know that they weren’t suggesting this was a reason for the delay, which is what you were inferring.

CryingAtTheDiscotheque · 27/01/2022 18:02

People also went to work, where they had refreshments...
What a dishonest way of characterising what has happened.
