To be really enjoying Boris Johnson's downfall Part 2 http://www.mumsnet.com/Talk/amiibeingunreasonable/4459992-To-be-really-enjoying-Boris-Johnsons-downfall-Part-2

And on it goes.

BJ partying or not wouldn't change anyone's death

The problem is that it does.

People were obviously always going to die in 2020 and 2021, young and old and for a variety of reasons, expected and unexpected.

However, the rules meant that many spent months with limited contact with family and friends. This was partly because they were told that we were all in it together and needed to protect the NHS and save lives, partly because of fear, and partly because the rules were being enforced.

Now people are left questioning whether they did the right thing. If there was a loop hole for interior designers visiting your place of work, for 100s of people in ‘work bubbles’, was all that pain and loneliness unnecessary?

People are just beginning to process what happened, and now we find Johnson didn’t really mean what he was saying?

the80sweregreat · 27/01/2022 07:49

Peter Bone is defending him now on GM tv. He is totally deluded. He is just going on about the vaccine etc.
Rory Stewart has put the boot in though.
It's Unbelievable that an MP can defend rule breaking to be honest when everyone else had to follow it

merrymouse · 27/01/2022 07:53

He will always have an income stream from newspaper columns etc, but he won't be remembered for being an even half decent PM. Partygate will follow him round.

There isn’t a violin small enough. It would have to be so small it could be played by an individual Covid virus.

the80sweregreat · 27/01/2022 07:54

Kate Garroway has got it , she is being very pragmatic , but clear and concise.
Not sure how Peter Bone can defend this to be honest , he keeps on about Boris Johnson's ' achievements' , as if he processed the vaccine himself ! I'm sure it was Boris eh??
Rory is also very good. (He must be a mumsnetter!!)

Roussette · 27/01/2022 07:57

Please don't say "we" as if you have been appointed to speak for the nation. I have sat with relatives in hospital at the end of life, and it is a deeply unpleasant experience, with hospital chaplains hissing into your ear that your mother can undoubtedly hear you despite being in a chemically induced coma and intubated up to the eyeballs. Death, especially in hospital, is often a deeply unpleasant experience - I would much rather remember relatives as they once were

I do apologise if I have offended you. Certainly not my intention.

I speak from my experience, from others I have spoken with at length in my previous position, and friends and family.

I felt what I said was gentle and kind, but it upset you.

We all handle this sort of thing differently.
Of course I do not speak for the nation, that's a bizarre thing to say on an opinion forum.

merrymouse · 27/01/2022 08:06

He is just going on about the vaccine etc.

As has already been mentioned, the U.K. was first to approve vaccine, but other countries have better coverage rates and lower death rates.

the80sweregreat · 27/01/2022 08:12

Peter Bone is clearly a huge Johnson fan.
At least he has a few friends left to fight his corner , but his arguments are fairly weak next to all the other things that have gone wrong.

Florianus · 27/01/2022 08:14

@CSWife

Is this seriously going to to drag on until Monday? FFS.
Apparently some of the civil servants named in the report are threatening to sue for defamation and government lawyers are warning that the resulting in court cases, even if they failed, could go on for months or even years - never-ending partygate.
ClaudineClare · 27/01/2022 08:16

It is very telling that Bone keeps being wheeled out on TV. He is hardly a political heavyweight. He has never been a minister and his main activity at Westminster has involved tabling numerous and often largely pointless Parliamentary Questions. He is also as morally dubious as Johnson.

borntobequiet · 27/01/2022 08:16

I’m personally very grateful to have had the vaccine and booster. But I don’t know if banging on about it is particularly helpful to Johnson given that a) there’s a vociferous anti-vaccine minority who are more likely to be Conservative supporters who will not think it a good thing b) most of us know he didn’t single-handedly invent and produce it and c) lots of people seem to be very indignant that it’s not 100% effective and the virus hasn’t just gone away because of it.

Roussette · 27/01/2022 08:16

There's been a really really interesting thread on Twitter. A prophesy of what might be the outcome with Johnson, which I happen to think is spot on.

It's now been unrolled to make it easy to read... well worth it...

ClaudineClare · 27/01/2022 08:18

Florianus where did you read that? Convenient to blame delays on Civil Servants. If that is the case, there is an easy solution, redact the names.

Peregrina · 27/01/2022 08:20

Apparently some of the civil servants named in the report are threatening to sue for defamation....

Is it defamation when you are named when you broke the Law?
Did they attend the parties or didn't they? We know that about 70 odd didn't, so it's not a question of everyone being forced to attend.

Notonthestairs · 27/01/2022 08:25

I read that thread last night Rousette. I agree that the "strong man" strategy 🙄 appears to be what is happening and explains Tory Mp's inertia. They are being love bombed, promised money for their constituents and threatened.

I'd remind them that Johnson doesn't stand by his promises to anyone but what is the point.

@DuncinToffee

A thread from Kate McCann (Sky)

twitter.com/kateemccann/status/1486434102127607810?s=21
NEW: Trudy Harrison, PM's PPS, contacted a private charter company on 25 Aug 21 (same date as FCO letter) to secure plane to evacuate animals and staff for Nowzad. A private sponsor funded, but she made clear her role with PM and told staff he was keen to get animals out quickly.

Cont.

I haven't followed this story very closely, but as I understand it Downing Street have said that the email in question came from a confused Foreign Office official who spoke to the Cabinet Office and then wrongly assumed the request had come from the PM. Ben Wallace, who oversaw the Afghan evacuations, said Johnson had nothing to do with requesting the evacuation of the animals. So much has been redacted in the email concerned that it is impossible to see who it was from or to.
Roussette · 27/01/2022 08:29

Notonthestairs

I agree.
BJ won't ever resign, he would have to be forced out. It reminds me of someone across the pond, the former guy.
BJ is not a man who keeps to his word.
I also think there isn't a natural successor to him which is impacting on this.

Florianus · 27/01/2022 08:29

I don't think Sue Gray will have accused anyone of breaking the law. The police might do so, but it is not her remit to do so. She may well have named more than 30, though, as she is reporting on something like 16 separate gatherings.
the80sweregreat · 27/01/2022 08:29

What has become of the MPs who are saying that they were bullied ? Rees mogg said yesterday that there would have to be a GE if they had to have a new leader in the future , this is a kind of a threat to the new MPs isn't it ?
It's a bit more subtle , but it's still dirty tricks

Notonthestairs · 27/01/2022 08:31

To double back to an earlier discussion.

We took away many choices from the dying and the bereaved. They went along with it because a) they didn't have a choice and b) they could comfort themselves that they were doing the right thing.

In the course of rabble rousing for Johnson some MP's have suggested everyone was breaking the law. This is not true but it implies that if you did follow the law then it's all on you. It's disgraceful argument borne of career desperation and a moral vacuum.

It was told to me by a neighbour who works for one of the civil service unions. Redacting names is an obvious solution but will lead to claims that the government is holding back detail. Who were the redacted names? Were they ministers? MPs? etc
the80sweregreat · 27/01/2022 08:36

I couldn't break into my dads care home to see my poor old dad ( who died of covid ) because they would have called the police I suppose.
The rules were there to protect the residents and the employees too. That's why so many obeyed them , because they were needed at that time and often couldn't have been broken anyway.
That's why people angry because now it's all our fault for having to follow the rules ?
..

Yes. As if they haven't suffered enough with all of this.

To then have to live with possible regret that you didn't break the rules is awful.

p.s. everyone I know did what they were supposed to do. We weren't all breaking the law. Unlike those in No.10

I have obviously missed this. Which MPs made that suggestion?

Ok. I was hoping for a slightly more reliable source tbh!
