Here's mine:

Otrivine nasal spray is an absolute saviour! I only discovered it last year and I've had some absolutely horrendous colds made better by using this stuff. It completely clears your nose within minutes. I went from not being able to breathe through my nose at all, to being able to sleep through the night with my airways clear. Amazing.

Would love to some other good medicine cabinet tip offs!

Nurofen Plus. It's an over the counter medicine that combines ibuprofen and codeine. More effective than paracetamol or ibuprofen on their own, just try to avoid taking it for more than three days at a time as the codeine part is an opioid and highly addictive.

georgarina · 24/01/2022 12:21

Besides the ones already mentioned..

Tea tree oil to comb into DC's hair during lice outbreaks
Clove oil to dilute for teething/any dental problem
Clary sage oil to put in bath when overdue with baby
Magnesium salts to relax muscles in the bath

MistySkiesAfterRain · 24/01/2022 12:21

Sudafed
Floradix for heavy periods
Vitamin D if I feel I am coming down with a cold

Not really medical but Flexitol or any cracked Heel Balm, its amazing.

LydiaGwilt · 24/01/2022 12:22

Kamillosan ointment - sold for sore nipples but excellent for soothing any kind of itchy rash. Smells nice too!
You can make Dioralyte yourself - using boiled water, sugar and salt - plenty of recipes/guidance online. When my toddler had sickness and diarrhoea and wouldn't swallow infant dioralyte. the GP told me to try him on apple juice with a pinch of salt.

Avarua · 24/01/2022 12:24

Tea tree oil. For anything fungal or anything like spots.

Soov. For itchy bites and stings.

mumsiedarlingrevolta · 24/01/2022 12:24

Magnesium sulfate paste.

When my DC were little they called it "the magic paste".

Amazing for drawing out splinters

Avarua · 24/01/2022 12:25

Oops I see a couple of people have mentioned tea tree oil already Blush

Thatkid · 24/01/2022 12:28

No longer sold but Indian brandee was THE thing for anything remotely gastro in my house. Not the most pleasant tasting thing in the world but a dose of this would see anyone right.
A bit TMI but it's the only thing that has ever stopped my travel sickness on coaches without also knocking me out stone cold as well.

Tyrozets (if you can find them - suspect they are discontinued). The only thing that has ever helped a sore throat. They are chalky little discs and they numb the throat and have an antibiotic in them too.

amazing
You’ll be gutted to know they’re definitely discontinued 😫😫

They are amazing, I’ve got 2 tubes I’m keeping for emergencies.

They arent discontinued i get them from a kamsons chemist near me x

yodaforpresident · 24/01/2022 12:43

Liquid paraffin for constipation - really grim but does the trick.

There used to be a powder you could buy for cuts/ blisters and it made them dry out/ heal quicker - fantastic stuff but I can't remember the name of it - I'm sure it had iodine in it too.

JudgeJ · 24/01/2022 12:44

@Waifwafer

Just thought of another: Feminax tablets for period pain. Way better than plain paracetamol. Got me through some very awful teenage heavy periods - luckily nowhere near as bad now in my 30s!
I use Naproxen because I get an awful pain in one of my legs and find them wonderful but I only discovered this weekend that Feminex is another form of Naproxen, I used them extensively when I was younger.
WithASpider · 24/01/2022 12:54

I have a comprehensive medical kit but my definite go to's are:

Bruldine - for pus and blood
Germoline - general soreness
ASDA Bronchial Balsam
ASDA Congestion relief - same active ingredient as Sudafed but stronger and a third of the price
Wilko graze plasters - all the Wilko range of plasters are fantastic tbh.
Liquid plaster - stings like the devil but is fantastic for skin round nails.
Piriton

Will have to add an Anti - emetic now too!

Waifwafer · 24/01/2022 13:03

Good to know about the cheaper version of Feminax tabs. Thank you all for your wonderful contributions so far!

Great thread.
To the poster who recommended mopiko. How can I tell it’s genuine?
What colour is your packaging?

brainflake · 24/01/2022 13:17

Orajel - mouth ulcers
Zovirax - cold sores
TCP - dp uses this for mouth ulcers and tooth ache!
Arnica cream - insect bites
Bio oil - wonders for psirosis

SomewhereOnlyIKnow · 24/01/2022 13:34

I swear by prunes for constipation. Have about 7 or 8 to get things moving, then 3 a day for maintenance.

bluesugar · 24/01/2022 16:03

@TickleMyFanny

J collis Browne

Only thing to help soothe my chest in the middle of the night when I have a really bad cough. Also it's really good if you just feel a bit off - a wonder liquid!

Hard to get hold of these days though

Agree

Stock up as they are discontinued. I have one tube left for emergencies!

Difflam throat rinse if also good for sore throat.

PixieLaLa · 28/01/2022 01:01

Igloo - for tongue ulcers
Coconut oil

Saracen · 28/01/2022 02:00

Eurax itch cream. Works almost instantly and lasts for hours. (Not as many hours as they claim, but still quite good.) You can also use it as an anaesthetic on a painful rash.

Saracen · 28/01/2022 02:05

@GromblesofGrimbledon

"Finger strip bandages- long plasters specifically for cuts on fingers. Love them!"

YES. Why were these not invented decades earlier? Most of our family's cuts are on our fingers, so I hardly need any other plasters! Elastoplast finger strips are miles better than anything else, especially for DH's big chunky injury-prone carpenter fingers.

Saracen · 28/01/2022 02:09

Silver nitrate pencil for verrucas. I tried everything else, including getting the GP to freeze them. Nothing really worked. All the while, DH kept telling me I needed silver nitrate pencils. But I never saw it in the chemists, so I figured it was just another of his dodgy folk remedies.

Finally ordered it on the internet and it does the trick!

MrsTerryPratchett · 28/01/2022 02:15

Two from Asia. If you have a Chinese supermarket near you.

Eagle Brand medicated oil. Sore muscles, migraines, bites, colds. Rub it on, feel better. It's magical.

Nin Jiom cough medicine. Utterly vile. Properly repulsive. But it works.

ChrimboGateauxCatto · 28/01/2022 02:16

Sturgeron cinnarizine for nausea / travel sickness. Sudocrem.

user1745 · 28/01/2022 02:47

4head rub on sticks. I find they can stop a headache in its tracks if I use it early enough or at least take the edge off.
