Here's mine:

Otrivine nasal spray is an absolute saviour! I only discovered it last year and I've had some absolutely horrendous colds made better by using this stuff. It completely clears your nose within minutes. I went from not being able to breathe through my nose at all, to being able to sleep through the night with my airways clear. Amazing.

Would love to some other good medicine cabinet tip offs!

Vicks first defence. Lifechanger. Stops cold instantly, I havent had a cold since discovering this 2 years ago, despite the kids having a cold every week.

SomewhereOnlyIKnow · 23/01/2022 21:24

Eurax is amazing for itches.

Okbye · 23/01/2022 21:26

Absolutely agree with Ortivine - I discovered it a few years back and ALWAYS have it in my house. Soon as it runs low I buy another one!

Same as previously mentioned Ultra Chloraseptic anaesthetic throat spray - it totally numbs your throat. Absolute game changer for me!

girafferaffle · 23/01/2022 21:30

I would have said ranitidine if it was still available. I know why it was withdrawn but it always worked better for me than omeprazole etc.

DrAddisonForbesMontgomery · 23/01/2022 21:30

Tesco do an own brand painkiller called recovery powders. They contain paracetamol, stomach settlers & something to rehydrate you.
I suffer from headaches & migraines and they are a massive help for me (not so much a full blown migraine but if I catch it quick enough they do help or help in the days after when I have a migraine hangover!)

OfstedOffred · 23/01/2022 21:35

Pseudoephedrine for congestion.

ParadiseLaundry · 23/01/2022 21:36

Yes to Vicks, it's absolutely magical how applying it to your feet stops you coughing in the night!

I also love rehydration sachets, not just for diarrhoea but any illness when you haven't eaten properly and of course hangovers!

Kids nurofen, way more effective than calpol, especially for teething pain.

DilemmaDelilah · 23/01/2022 21:37

Definitely sudocrem - also really great for chub rub. Bronchostop for annoying tickmy coughs. Cetirazine hay fever remedy - just half a tablet gives me an excellent night's sleep - and seems to work for the next night too. (Disclaimer - this is NOT what they are meant for but it works for me)

SomewhereOnlyIKnow · 23/01/2022 21:39

Asda liquid talc for chub-rub and sweaty under boobs.

FidoRido · 23/01/2022 21:39

This is such a useful thread!

My contribution is: brulidine cream. Same uses as germoline type creams but it’s absolutely magic on burns.

FlyingPandas · 23/01/2022 21:40

Lots of mine have already been mentioned but I'll add

Anbesol - amazing for mouth ulcers

Germaloids cream!

and a slightly random one - not kept in the meds cabinet, but bicarb of soda. Always use it if I feel a UTI is threatening: my top tip is to dilute one teaspoon of bicarb into a large glass of squash, drink steadily, rinse and repeat. It tastes a bit cloudy and sounds like a bit of a folksy old wives tale, but essentially the idea is that it neutralises the acid in your wee Smile Won't necessarily remove the need to get anti-bs, of course, but it should certainly help with the pain and discomfort until you can get a prescription. I swear by it and always make sure I have bicarb of soda in the cupboard for this reason!

BurnDownTheDiscoHangTheDJ · 23/01/2022 21:45

Alka Seltza XS (dark blue one). Taken prohibitively before you go to sleep it cures a hangover.

HalfShrunkMoreToGo · 23/01/2022 21:46

Sudafed, I can't sleep if my nose is even a bit blocked so Sudafed is a super star.

Other than that it's the little syringes that come with cal pop, obviously good for giving medicine but also great for distracting kids by using them as water pistols or cheering my DD up by letting her eat a little pot of custard with a syringe 😂

InThePresenceOfWeevil · 23/01/2022 21:50

Clove oil for toothache. A tiny pot of magic instant relief!

SiobhanSharpe · 23/01/2022 21:51

Deep Relief anti-inflammatory gel. It's 5 per cent ibuprofen gel with levo menthol.
Very cooling, good for minor muscle aches, neck ache and mosquito or gnat bites.
(The menthol cools the bite area and the ibuprofen takes the swelling down and stops it itching. )

SiobhanSharpe · 23/01/2022 21:53

Should add it's not for under 12s.

HunkyPunk · 23/01/2022 21:55

Does anyone else remember kaolin & morphine liquid for stomach upsets and diarrhoea? Used to be readily available over the counter in most pharmacies and was one of my best ‘go to’ remedies. Think it fell out of favour and although it’s not been banned, I haven’t seen it for decades!

Same!! Love these. I take one if I feel like I've eaten too much, always helps settle down.
niceandsimple · 23/01/2022 22:01

olbas oil - love it. even the kids ask for it, as soon as there is a hint of a cold. never have a blocked nose at night if I use it, and it lasts forever...
also sudocrem the magic cream for everything.

PlinkPlankPlunk · 23/01/2022 22:01

Sudocrem - for speeding up anything that needs healing or drying out
Smith’s rosebud salve - like vaseline but nicer
Arnica cream - magic for those of us who bruise like a peach

SweetPetrichor · 23/01/2022 22:02

My core requirements are:
Imodium
Cystitis relief sachets
Sudafed nasal spray
Tea tree oil
Liquid plaster

A580Hojas · 23/01/2022 22:06

Nelson's tea tree cream - for spots, rashes, insect bites, minor wounds, sore skin. It's like a miracle product.

BlueFlavour · 23/01/2022 22:12

Flower essence sweeties in tin. Brilliant for calming kids down after an injury.

Ringsender2 · 23/01/2022 22:12

@BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz

Tyrozets (if you can find them - suspect they are discontinued). The only thing that has ever helped a sore throat. They are chalky little discs and they numb the throat and have an antibiotic in them too.

amazing

You can buy them OTC in Ireland.

Mine is Bepantiseptic - antiseptic cream for spots, scratches turning a bit iffy, exczema (keeps germ-free, moisturised and also numbs).

I love TCP also.

NeedWineNow · 23/01/2022 22:12

I tried to get Kaolin & morphine recently for my mum and the pharmacist told me it was no longer stocked because of the morphine. She recommended Immodium which did the trick.

My must haves are

Bronchostop liquid and lozenges for coughs.
Boots honey & lemon throat pastimes for sore throats. Better and cheaper than Strepsils
Mag Sulf paste for splinters eye
Own brand paracetamol and ibuprofen
Arnica gel for bruises and muscle aches
Lavender gel for skin irritations and spots
Aloe Vera gel for soothing - burns, sunburn, prickly heat

I get my gels from SBC or QVC
