To think life is too short to slice onions

Spaghetti for dinner. DH bought whole onions. Sob.

AIBU to think ready made sliced onions are a marvellous invention? And never buy whole onions again?

I used to buy a lot of pre sliced stuff because I was shit at chopping. But when we moved house, someone gave us a really good knife set, which made me realise I’d been using blunt bastards for years. Chopping up onions, chicken, even tough stuff like root veggies is easy now. I should be on the shopping channel.

PlanetNormal · 22/01/2022 17:29

I chop my own because I like to show off my chopping skills, if only to myself! I will never be as good as Jamie, but I’m a heck of a lot better than Nigella.

Ameanstreakamilewide · 22/01/2022 17:32

@BennysBingoBonanza

Never heard of presliced onions before- sounds ridiculous.
Once upon a time I would have agreed with you, but a good friend of mine has MS and has limited dexterity his hands; and things like this are a godsend for him.
DinosApple · 22/01/2022 17:36

Ready chopped frozen onions all the way here. They also don't burn your eyes.
My mum used to judge me. She spent approx 50% of my childhood chopping onions (Indian cooking needs a ton of onions).

She's slowly coming over to the dark side with arthritic fingers.

Bohemianwannabe · 22/01/2022 17:37

Well as someone who has begun to suffer terribly with sore crying red eyes within a mile of raw onions I understand what you're saying completely. However if you wear chemistry goggles or actually contact lenses work as well, then it is no problem as yes it only takes a few minutes but as it is Saturday your husband is being unreasonable and you should tell him he has to slice the onions as life is most definitely too short to waste your own time doing so.

Longingforsunshine · 22/01/2022 17:38

Ready chopped frozen onion here too. I’m all for convenience

OldTinHat · 22/01/2022 17:39

Frozen sliced onions and frozen peppers are a game changer - and great value for money. I hear you OP!

SilverontheTree · 22/01/2022 17:39

Mostly buy whole onions but pre chopped are useful to have in the freezer. Made 2 massive curries today and found pre chopped fresh made it loads quicker, along with frozen garlic and ginger paste blocks.

WomanStanleyWoman · 22/01/2022 17:39

@Lockheart

I checked Sainsbury's.

Loose whole white onions are 85p per kilo.

Diced white onion is £2.75 a kilo and sliced red onion £3.75 a kilo!!

You're paying 3-4 times as much!

I checked Morrisons. 95p for a kilo of brown onions. 79p for 500g of frozen chopped onions. So actually less than twice the price - and well worth it to avoid streaming eyes and your hands still smelling of onion hours later.
GrumpyTerrier · 22/01/2022 17:41

I used to get pre-grated cheese til I realise they coat it in cellulose to stop it sticking together and also put some kind of chemical in it for the same reason.

AAAAAGHH · 22/01/2022 17:43

I like to have frozen onions, peppers and mushrooms in for ad hoc cooking but if I'm actively planning to make a spaghetti Bol from scratch I prefer to buy fresh.

WhenTheyComeForYou · 22/01/2022 17:45

The world is a perverse place when someone can't chop an onion! If you don't have time to peel and chop an onion, I think maybe that's a sign to slow down otherwise.

WomanStanleyWoman · 22/01/2022 17:47

‘Perverse’? Bloody hell.

Snoopsnoggysnog · 22/01/2022 17:47

Useful in certain circumstances
I used them a lot when I had toddlers
Now I’m fine to chop my own

Pre grated cheese is VILE

RJnomore1 · 22/01/2022 17:47

Pre chopped onions and pre grated cheese May free up microseconds of time but they most certainly do not improve my quality of life as they both taste bogging.

Oneunslicedonion · 22/01/2022 17:47

I can chop an onion, to be fair, I just really can’t be arsed!

YANBU
I bought frozen garlic and ginger and it's the best thing I've ever done. They're grated mixed and in portion sized blocks, I just grab a chuck and chuck it in the pan.

Ellavoday · 22/01/2022 17:50

YANBU if he is expecting you to cook with them! Let him chop them.

However, I do prefer fresh onions, frozen onions have a strange consistency.

Inextremis · 22/01/2022 17:51

Does no one use a food processor to slice onions if you have to do a lot of them?

DockOTheBay · 22/01/2022 17:52

@codexa

Slicing a few onions will save the planet OP. You have been warned!

Ready chopped, frozen, onion powder all used by me. Life is too short for crying eyes and smelly fingers and chopping boards anymore.

As if it will save the planet. Do you think the real problem is people using a bag of frozen onions once a fortnight? Or is it the tiniest tiniest drop the ocean.
PadBurnup · 22/01/2022 17:53

I'm with you OP, but i find chopped onions are too big. Waitrose frozen chopped shallots and frozen soffitto however are the best.

Add the frozen blocks of ginger and also garlic from Asda's world food freezer and it means i can have dinner going in a few mins. I've not chopped an onion in years.

secular39 · 22/01/2022 17:54

Funny... onions don't make me cry anymore.

Reallybadidea · 22/01/2022 17:56

I read about frozen chopped onions on one of the life hack threads on here. I had no idea they were so cheap (65p for 500g at Aldi). That's the equivalent of about 6 onions once you've removed the skin and end bits, so probably very little in it price-wise. Probably same amount of plastic too.

I had no idea they were so controversial though!

Seashor · 22/01/2022 18:00

Absolutely agree with you op.

We don’t have one but then you have to wash it?
