To think Adele’s been shockingly unprofessional?

Adele was due to start a Las Vegas residency at Caesar’s Palace this weekend and cancelled the entire thing less than 24 hours ahead of time, saying they weren’t ready for a number of different reasons.

FIL had bought tickets to the opening night for himself and MIL as a 40th wedding anniversary present, they had pretty much just checked into their hotel when she announced it wasn’t going ahead, and the cost of that and their flights is now money down the drain. DH and I and BIL and SIL were planning on taking them away for a family weekend at Easter but have instead offered to pay for travel and accommodation when (if?) it gets rescheduled.

I get that covid is fucking a lot of things up for a lot of people, but surely they could have faced reality a bit sooner? Even one more day’s notice would have saved so many people taking flights and checking into hotel rooms that they could have rebooked or been refunded for.

@ttcstinks Think I recall your thread, you got flames but I agree.
Crying at work In the same category as screaming/swearing. Unprofessional.

Of course there are a few close colleagues it’s ok to be emotional with. Similarly in the face of devastating news such as a death, illness redundancy.

But crying as an excuse for poor performance? Nope.

I say that as a serial crier…stopped a few driving lessons halfway because I cried and just couldn’t go on. I have needed a cry for work things but just hold it off until it’s not a roomful of people!

RedToothBrush · 22/01/2022 10:17

@CPL593H

I'm not a fan but from what I've heard/read, she is not a natural live performer and doesn't actually enjoy it, so no chance of her doing "a piano and a mic" type pared back performance where you are utterly exposed.

If this had to be cancelled, it should have been done at an earlier stage and the whole thing shows disrespect for her fans. Screams 'diva' to me, I'm afraid.

Even more reason to get your act together and make sure you had multiple back up plans or pull the shows earlier.
Dontgetyerknicksinatwist · 22/01/2022 10:17

I think the tears she shed in the video were for herself and not the people she’s let down. She should have had plans in place to cover this type of eventuality. She’s got the money to pay for back up staff. So many famous celebrities are wrapped up in themselves with barely a care for anyone else. Hardly surprising I guess when you are paid millions and idolised and worshipped by so many. It’s sickening really as so many people will be facing extreme poverty this year with the cost of living crisis.

dworky · 22/01/2022 10:17

On the contrary, she is being completely professional.

Ponoka7 · 22/01/2022 10:18

@RevolvingPivot, she bought a house for her ex to live in across the street from her.

If Adele hadn't have been overweight/obese and made the comments that she did about tax paying, being anti social, her Tory views etc then she would have been as attacked as Molly Mea was and wouldn't have the love she did from the start. A persona has been built for her, but her actions show it is nothing like the real her.

peaceanddove · 22/01/2022 10:19

@Crikeyalmighty

I work in this industry— this would have been obvious 10 days ago— unless she herself as a solo performer had covid- or was ill —everything else can be covered off — even if you had to announce a pared down ‘show’ — shockingly bad diva behaviour— she’s really not that great either. Just hyped beyond belief, I can find you 20 girl club /cruise singers who can hold a tune just as well within a few hours.
Yes, quite. Have seen plenty of unknown female vocalists who could easily sing Adele off the stage. Properly trained and disciplined singers who were professional enough to look after their voices so they could perform night after night. And properly professional so that they could be relied on to show up and give the punters what they had paid for.

I would have retained a modicum of respect for Adele if she had a recorded a measured, adult, non-sobbing, explanation and apology for cancelling last minute. Followed by an explanation as to how she would be refunding all her fans who had been left so out of pocket.

@AlternativePerspective

I can’t be doing with all these tearful announcements where someone cries and apologises and yada yada yada. Just a load of show to garner sympathy.
I don't even live in the UK and it was in the news here. She has some marketing team.

We had a similar thing happen with Sam Smith. The first night they did appear on stage, sang one song and then left, never to return. No explanation, just sorry folks, show is over. Then cancelled the rest of the shows of the tour across the country.

For us this was quite a big deal as its international artists touring in our country. People fly in from other areas, book hotels etc to come to see the artists.

I am sure you can imagine the local talk and memes that came out after that, Stay with me, too good at goodbyes. I stopped listening to their music after that as well.

It was later said that they were not feeling well, but it didn't stop them from taking in all the sights as they were obvs spotted in certain areas for a week or so after.

Stormbraver99 · 22/01/2022 10:22

There is probably more to it than there seems to be.
It may be something personal and private that she doesn't want to share.
When I'm going through tough times I only tell those closest to me.
I can't imagine how hard it must be to feel pressured to share it with the media.

CoffeeWithCheese · 22/01/2022 10:25

Personally I think her voice is failing. She had vocal cord surgery - then made the huge comeback and it doesn't sound quite right still to me (there's some distortions on the divorce whine single that have been driving me mad every time it's on the radio - which is bloody endlessly). I wonder if she's realising she's got enough in it to work as a recording artist still but doing live performances every weekend isn't something it's up to yet/still.

Covid of course gives a nice cover up.

Omicrone · 22/01/2022 10:26

Yeah it's pretty bad really. It's not like a Las Vegas residency is mainly for locals is it, like a UK tour would be? Pretty much everyone going will have had flights and hotels booked as well as the show tickets.

ahcmonnow · 22/01/2022 10:26

I wouldn’t open my curtains if she was playing in my garden but I appreciate a lot of people like her caterwauling.
There is NO excuse under the sun to cancel a gig in less than 24 hours unless she was sick herself. You don’t just realise the day before that everything isn’t ready!
I feel so so sorry for those people who spent so much money getting to Vegas only to be met with this bollox. The snivelling sorry video is pathetic.

Georgeskitchen · 22/01/2022 10:26

Never been a fan of Adele. I've never understood why people love her miserable caterwauling so much. I would rather see someone like Annie Lennox with some really punchy music

ChiefStockingStuffer · 22/01/2022 10:27

YANBU

She could have gone and sung; Las Vegas is chock full of musicians.

Or she could have cancelled with a lot more notice. She would have known she was no where near ready as a show well in advance.

She's done this before in London, crocodile sobbing and all ... believe those people are still waiting for the 'rebooked' shows ... funny how she's planned to go on to do other things but not honored those.

Bunnycat101 · 22/01/2022 10:27

The cynic in me says something else is going on. I don’t see why they couldn’t cancel the first couple of shows rather than the whole residency.

There have been loads of covid west end cancellations. The shows have been back as quickly as possible. I saw a video of Lapland uk being told they were going to have to shut the next day for covid restrictions and they managed to find people in hotels who had already travelled and get them in that evening so. That is pulling out all the stops not cancelling for 4 months.

HandlebarLadyTash · 22/01/2022 10:27

Unless she had covid she should have done a performance.
An annoncamat made that the show was incomplete. Tickets could have had an option for full refund or partial if people attended the performance

Ithinkimalonenow24 · 22/01/2022 10:27

This has been handled terribly. I think she has stage fright and doesn't want to do it. As said people don't go to see Adele for the dancing, special effects, I imagine she just stands there and sings. I think the fans would rather see this then some prop or lighting.

I didn't know it's only 2 shows a week, so why not cancel the first few weeks, to scale back the show.

As said Katy Perry has recently put on a elaborate show.

Artists don't care about fans. So don't buy her sobbing videos.

I think even worse is Harry Styles, to keep people waiting for 2 years, and then switch to stadiums and less dates and think fans getting presale first will make up for that. I'd be annoyed if was going.

I'm a Madonna fan, only experience off this was her last tour where she got a knee injury and shows in Europe were cancelled or shortened. My show was fine but in Portugal she cancelled when fans were in the theatre. But I know she wouldn't have gone on if she couldn't give people the full show but I still think she could have sat on a stool and given fans something.

MsFannySqueers · 22/01/2022 10:29

@BoodleBug51 I agree entirely with your post. It’s simply her voice is just not up to singing live on a regular basis.

Lesperance · 22/01/2022 10:31

@dworky

On the contrary, she is being completely professional.
Do you to work and sob when telling people bad news?
Lampzade · 22/01/2022 10:32

@Omicrone

Yeah it's pretty bad really. It's not like a Las Vegas residency is mainly for locals is it, like a UK tour would be? Pretty much everyone going will have had flights and hotels booked as well as the show tickets.
Exactly I don’t mind Adele, but think it was totally unprofessional cancelling the show so late.
Starburst24 · 22/01/2022 10:33

I can’t see the appeal of this woman at all. I didn’t watch the video, just saw a snippet on some news program and I couldn’t believe how unprofessional she is.

They’d have know it was going to be a cancellation days before but covid is a brilliant get out clause

The last time I heard of a cancellation at short notice like this was Il Divo back in December. They had to pull out with one hours notice. Fans weren’t happy as they set off or had arrived at the venue. Unfortunately one of the members has been hospitalised for Covid and sadly died a few days later. They’ve postponed until later this year. As they say, the show must go on.

I was also pissed off that Adele’s drama was bigger news than Meat Loaf dying until later in the day

MsFannySqueers · 22/01/2022 10:33

Yes @peaceanddove totally agree with you and @CoffeeWithCheese.

TwentyFirstCenturyTricoteuse · 22/01/2022 10:34

There are huge legal ramifications for her cancelling this late. The insurance on these is watertight: you can cancel for illness, extreme weather, stuff like that, but just not being ready, the lawyers are going to eat her alive.

HoneyFlowers · 22/01/2022 10:35

She sounds genuine in the video, it must be a huge task to pull off a show. Her fingernails freak me out a little though.

TansySorrel · 22/01/2022 10:38

@PandoraP

I would be relieved if I was going to an Adee concert and it was cancelled 😂
